However, with some key returners, they are poised to make a push for the playoffs in the 2024 season.  “We ended the season at 8-10, we won our last three games of the year and we were in the mix for that playoff spot but unfortunately we didn’t do enough good things to get there,” said head coach Keith Kobasiuk. William Floyd made the playoffs in 2022, where they e...

No. 8 William Floyd and No. 2 Sachem East squared off for the fourth time this season – in the most important game to date – and it was the upstart Colonials who came away with the 6-4 upset victory over the League I champs. During the regular season, Sachem East had won two of three, but coach Keith Kobasiuk stated that his team was “competitive all year, and we were competitive against them,” and that they are a “next day...

Deeper Staff, More Experience Fueling Higher Hopes for William Floyd in ‘22

by Mike Anderson Playing in League I of Section XI is always a tall task, and the 2021 season saw no exception to that. Five teams won at least 12 games last season from League I, which held back some younger teams, such as William Floyd High School. Floyd’s varsity baseball team had an up and down year, finishing below .500, yet still being able to show their competitiveness by winning seven games in a very competitive league. Head coach Keith Kobasiuk, now entering his fifth year as varsity head coach for William Floyd, gave an honest assessment of his team’s performance last year, citing a lack of experience as the main reason for their losing season. “We graduated two seniors who were on the field playing full-time. Everyone else was a junior or sophomore. And with the Covid season, so...

Q & A With Tommy Verga on IG Live

I know right now it’s a crazy time. What are you doing to stay sane? It’s crazy. I’ve just been trying to keep after it. Whenever it’s a nice day outside, I try to find a field to get some BP in – or I have a cage out in my yard. I have a tee in my basement for rainy days and I have a home gym, too. So, I’ve just been hitting that six times a week just as I normally would, and it’s been working well. How has Coach [Keith Kobasiuk] been in keeping in contact with you? Coach is good. He’s been keeping in contact with us, I’ve been texting him. He just wants us all to stay safe and just stay ready in case there is a season, and hopefully there will be. You’re a two-sport star. It’s safe to say William Floyd is a premier football program in Suffolk County as you won another county championship...

William Floyd Looks to Build On Last Year’s Playoff Appearance

It was a year to be proud of for William Floyd, as they qualified for a postseason berth for the first time in eight years. They finished with a regular season record of 13-7, and won their first-round playoff game against rival Sachem East along the way for a total of 14 wins. Head Coach Keith Kobasiuk, entering his third year as head coach, but 12th with the program, felt his players performed well last year but they face the challenge of replacing a big group of seniors. They had eight seniors last year – seven were starters – and three were starting pitchers. Replacing all those innings could be an obstacle. “We’re going to try to piece it together on the mound,” said Kobasiuk. Replacing All-League southpaw A.J. Verga will be difficult. They also graduated...

Ty Acker Delivers Walk-Off Hit to Propel Sachem East to 6-5 Win in 10 Innings

Walk-off single by Tyler Acker and Sachem East wins 6-5 in 10 innings ! pic.twitter.com/Jd3BEX8H2x — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 1, 2019 In a game featuring several high-profile players, it was sophomore Ty Acker who was the difference. The back-and-forth affair that featured five lead changes went 10 innings ended on a bloop single by Acker to score catcher Ryan Micheli and send the team into a frenzy. The story line entering the game was the matchup between sophomore stud Rafe Schlesinger and Molloy-commit A.J. Verga, who was named to our Preseason All-Long Island list. Schlesinger was understandably nervous in the first couple innings pitching in front of a big crowd with three Division-I coaches holding radar guns behind the plate. Floyd capitalized right away on an RBI ...
