GAME RECAP: Wheatley Captures Class B Long Island Championship Against Babylon

by Tucker Terranova Final: Babylon 1 | Wheatley 3 Wheatley wins their first Class B Championship since 2021! pic.twitter.com/GmFQzf2qnF — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 30, 2024 Since Coach David Burke took over the Wheatley program in 2023, one thing has been certain: in big games, Connor Quinn gets the ball. After today’s contest, Burke described Quinn as “the kid who, as a coach, you dream of having. You know when you put the ball in his hands in pressure situations that he will reward you.” Quinn, in the biggest game of his career at Wheatley, backed up Burke’s trust in him with yet another stellar performance. The right-hander, who will be heading to SUNY Brockport this fall, ensured that today would not be his last time in the white and red. Quinn went the dista...

I was piling the zone, attacking batters and we got the win.” Carleo finished the day with tallying up 12 strikeouts and five walks in his no-hitting performance.  “I wanted to command my fastball,” Carleo said. “Throughout the season my fastball has been my best pitch by fa...

Wheatley Looks To Reach Finals Again In 2024

by Mike Merolle (Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s season preview series.) In his first year as head coach for Wheatley, David Burke led the team to the Nassau County Class B Finals. It came down to a one-run game where Seaford only allowed one hit and prevailed. Although Seaford came out on top, it was still a season full of positives for Burke and the Wheatley Wildcats.  The site of Game 1 of the Nassau County Class B Finals between Seaford (20-1) and Wheatley (19-6). First pitch coming up at 4:30 pic.twitter.com/mTBGROwkZv — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 25, 2023 “The season went how I expected. I expected to be competitive and to be in the hunt for a county championship, but we just came up one run short,” said Burke.  Burke is...

GAME RECAP: Sean Costello Fires 4-Hit Shutout in Game 1 of Nassau Class B County Finals

Bottom 4: Stephen Ierides bloops an RBI single and it’s 2-0 Seaford pic.twitter.com/0b2PKApwtx — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 25, 2023 Although it’s important to have a roster with depth, the most important thing is having star players that perform like stars in big games. Seaford, who entered the Nassau Class B playoffs, as the No. 1 seed thanks to a 1-loss regular season, have continued to dominate their competition and now are on the brink of a County Championship for the first time in program history. They had been a Class A school up until last year which certainly made the path more difficult. Led by two of the top pitchers in Nassau County this year and a relentless top of the order, the Vikings cruised to a 6-0 victory over No. 5 Wheatley, who were the only team t...

He is taking over for legendary Paul Paino who retired with 434 career wins and 10 Nassau County Championships.  Burke, a former Diamond Award winner (1993...

Island Trees Cruises to 14-1 Non-League Victory Over Wheatley

By Thomas Cregan Vinny Giambona with a 3 run triple to put Island Trees up now 13-1 over Wheatley pic.twitter.com/HMTPFnAZO7 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 23, 2022 Island Trees, led by big performances from Connor Waiting and Vinny Giambona, rolled through Wheatley with a 14–1 victory in 6 innings.   In what was set to be a big-time non-league matchup between two of last year’s Long Island Conference Champions, Island Trees showed just how deep their lineup is.  Featuring a pitching matchup between James Tercynski (Wheatley) and Matt Ramirez (Island Trees).  Both pitchers started off the first inning well only allowing one run each however, the first two innings were not an indication of what was to come. Island Trees would open the scoring with Connor Waiting who blas...

Ken Kortright State Farm Game of the Week: Kyle Rosenberg Strikes Out 10 in 3-2 Victory Over Oyster Bay

Kyle Rosenberg on his 11 K performance in Wheatley’s huge 3-2 win over previously undefeated Oyster Bay pic.twitter.com/KH0YBA8ZfD — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 11, 2022 A battle of the unbeatens. Two 6-0 Nassau Class B teams went head-to-head on Monday afternoon with the reigning champs, Wheatley, coming away with a 3-2 victory in a very well-played game behind Kyle Rosenberg‘s 10 strikeout, 6.1 IP outing and some clutch-hitting by a player in his first varsity game. Rosenberg has been Wheatley’s ace for the past 1+ seasons but he was facing a tough opponent, New Haven-commit Michael Gatti, who entered the game with a 2-0 record, 0.00 ERA and 23 strikeouts over 10 innings. The Wildcats of Wheatley got out to a quick 1-0 lead thanks to some good fortune. Af...

Wheatley Ready to Defend Title

Bryan Mccleary go-ahead hit in the top of the ninth to give Wheatley the 4-3 win over Cold Spring Harbor pic.twitter.com/hhAk43kCjE — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 10, 2021 Wheatley is coming off another championship season. They defeated Cold Spring Harbor to capture the League VI Nassau County Championship. They followed that up with a victory over Pierson in the Long Island Championship. Head Coach Paul Paino is no stranger to winning. He has led Wheatley to eight County Championships – including six in the past decade. He won his 400th career game last season and is back for 2022. His first season as head coach was 1983 and has been at the helm every year since. The format in 2021 was much different than previous years. They began the season in League 5 which consisted...

Recapping A Thrilling Day of County Championships

It doesn’t get much better than 10 elimination games across Long Island to crown County Champions. Scratch that, it doesn’t get ANY better than that. The games ranged from Sag Harbor to South Side, and the great majority of them were close. I wish I could be at all the games but that’s just not possible, so I took my best guess as to which game to cover. I started at Sachem East, stayed for a few innings and made the short drive to Selden for Newfield’s game. The decision worked out well as Commack got out to an early 4-1 lead then I went to a Newfield and the score was 0-0 in the second inning. Here’s all the action. Nassau III South Side defeated Manhasset, 2-0, on the road behind a complete game, two-hit shutout by Danny Russell. This was a remarkable turn ...

What’s Going On With Nassau Conference V

This year was bizarre from the jump – so I understand that a lot of decisions had to be made for the first time. That much is true. That still doesn’t mean that common sense doesn’t apply. So when Nassau and Suffolk each switched up their conference formats for this season, there was going to be a decision that needed to be made. At the most basic level, Nassau had five conference and Suffolk had six. That would be fine if there was no Long Island Championship involved, but once they decided that June 20th would be the Long Island Championship day – they needed a way to even it out. According to my source, the conventional wisdom would suggest that Nassau Conference V would play a playoff like the other leagues – top 2 get byes, 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 in the first ro...

Vinny Giambona Fires CG Gem in 10-1 Victory Over Wheatley

Sometimes it just takes a little tough love. Island Trees Head Coach Joseph D’Auria gave his team a stern talking to next to the dugout after they stranded the bases loaded with no out in the second inning and failed to score. Whatever he said paid immediate dividends as Island Trees woke up in the top of the third inning, taking a 2-1 lead on an E5 and an RBI ground out by Connor Waiting. Starting pitcher Vinny Giambona allowed just a run inthe second on a sac fly off the bat of Andrew Thaler. From that point on, he was untouchable. He finished with a CG, allowing just the one run, yielding five hits and striking out six batters. Vinny Giambona fired a complete game allowing just 1 run in a 10-1 victory for Island Trees pic.twitter.com/CA0ozwcjuD — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbasebal...

Wheatley Primed To Contend For Class B Championship

Despite coming off a season that was not up to their usual standard, Wheatley head coach Paul Paino’s expectations for this upcoming season have not changed one bit.  “We’d one six championships in ten years, but then we had an off season last year, where we didn’t even make the playoffs. We missed it by one game. So we’re looking to get back on track,” Paino said. “We certainly hope to. We have a good group of kids coming up.” First and foremost, Paino will be counting on his two senior captains to lead the team, if they are going to go get to where they hope to go. Both named Nick, one Nick Sampogna, the other Nick Papageorge. “They’re going to be the team leaders,” said Paino.  “Nick Papageorge is an infielder and a middle of the lineup hitter. He’s one of the better players on Long Isl...
