Josh Knoth Takes No-Hitter Into 7th Inning, Pat-Med Advances to Face No. 1 Sachem East

Sac fly by Dante Morabito – Pat Med has completely broken the game open in the fifth pic.twitter.com/ZZ2mjlDHHr — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 15, 2021 As far as no-hit bids go, this one didn’t exactly feel like the usual ones go. Especially in a playoff game between heated league rivals. Partially due to the score and partially due to the traffic on the bases. In any event, Patchogue-Medford sophomore ace Josh Knoth took a no-hitter into the seventh and was one out away from completing the job but a two-out dropped popup prolonged the inning and the next batter, Mikey Mortilla, hit a single up the middle that he beat the throw to first for a clean hit. Knoth was taken out by coach Anthony Frascogna in favor of Tristan Verni, who allowed an RBI single to to the fol...

Connetquot Starts off With a Bang and Recap of Opening Day for Section XI

I mean, you couldn’t have asked for anything more on Opening Day for Section XI baseball. Town of Brookhaven was generous enough to host the Coaches Memorial Opening Weekend which will feature tributes to Carmine Argenziano, Bill Batewell and Bob Ambrosini today – the three coaches who passed away over the previous year. That will take place today at Moriches. As far as the action on the field – it was thrilling and the energy from the dugouts and fans were absolutely electric. You could just feel the excitement and anger from all the emotions the past year. It was relieving to know we arrived at this point – even if many were frustrated with the route it took. In any event, I had a busy day. I drove to Kings Point to watch the Opening Round of the Skyline Conferenc...

Ward Melville Excited to Start the Season and Debut New Field

On Monday, Steven Matz will start for the Toronto Blue Jays and on Tuesday, Anthony Kay will start for them. While they are four years apart and never actually pitched on the same team, the two southpaws graduating from Ward Melville HS and winding up on the same pitching staff is an incredible story. Additionally, Ben Brown – four years younger than Kay – has been steadily rising up the minor league ranks in the Phillies minor league system and has a shot to be the third Patriots to be in the big leagues at once. While he will tell you otherwise, Ward Melville HC Lou Petrucci is a big reason for that success. The Patriots head coach is as passionate and knowledgeable about the game as there is and the players gravitate towards it. And with a third former player on the cusp of ...

He stated that he was undergoing Tommy John surgery by Dr. James Paci and he was transferring from UCONN to St. Anselm College. He later changed his mind and has since transferred to UMBC – which competes in the America East. He is the reigning Carl Yastrzemski Award winner – which is given to the top player in Suffolk County. He led Ward Melville to the Suffolk Class AA Finals against Connetquot. He compiled a record of 5-1 with an ERA of 1.44 ERA with 103 strikeouts. He allowed only 19 hits over 49 innings. The high point of his season...

Who Was The Best Team of The 2010s?

When it comes to being considered the best–the bar is set high. Over the course of the past 10 seasons, there have been undefeated seasons, there have been back-to-back state champs, there have been pitching staffs loaded with Division-I talent and pro pitchers. But there can only be one team considered the best. I have watched a lot of baseball, but I didn’t trust my own instinct so I solicited the help of some trusted sources to put together my definitive list of the best teams of the decade. To make it a bit easier, we narrowed it down to teams that have won a Long Island Championship, because plenty of talented teams have made it to the finish line only to come up short. We also did not list any school more than once on purpose because many of the back-to-back champions featured the sa...

OTD: Max Nielsen Captures 52nd Carl Yastrzemski Award

(Editor’s Note: Max Nielsen announced yesterday that he has decided to transfer to University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He played his freshman season at UCONN but decided to transfer to Saint Anselm’s but has since changed his mind. He had Tommy John surgery last month and will likely miss the 2021 season.)  When he was in sixth grade, Max Nielsen remembers going to the Ward Melville varsity baseball games watching Anthony Kay star for the Patriots. That was in 2013 when the southpaw was dominating Suffolk County hitters and leading the Patriots to the Long Island Championship. Six years later, it was Nielsen who was the key piece to the Patriots claiming the League I title and making a deep postseason run once again into the semifinals of the Suffolk AA postseason....

Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth, right fielder Matt Franco crushed a game-winning three-run home run to left center field to give Ward Melville an 8-6 lead, one that they would not relinquish. The game was the definition of back-and-forth as the Patriots jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run b...

OTD: Roman Dorosh, Dan Palermo Power Arrows Past Ward Melville

Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is Dan Palermo who hit a leadoff HR in Sachem East’s 8-2 victory pic.twitter.com/vnDXcHOMm3 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 18, 2018 When you play a team for the fifth time of the season, there are no surprises. The cream rises to the top on merit alone and Sachem East rose to the occasion from the first at bat–when center fielder and Iona-commit Dan Palermo launched a solo shot to left off Max Nielsen on their way to an 8-2 victory over Ward Melville. With the victory, the Arrows advance to face West Islip in the finals of Bracket #4. “We always like facing Ward Melville–they’re our biggest rival, we always get hyped for these kind of games and we love it,” said Palermo. They continued to tack on runs. Craig Leonard and Dylan Stalzer ad...

OTD: Ward Melville Ends Longwood’s 7-0 Start

Drake Eggleston fires a 90-MPH fastball past James Myler and Ward Melville holds on, 3-1, to end Longwood’s 7-game winning streak pic.twitter.com/ydecyfY71N — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 13, 2018 This one had playoff intensity from the first pitch. It had an ejection before most fans even made their way to a seat and it had excitement right up until the last pitch, when flame-throwing closer Drake Eggleston (UPENN-commit) fired a 90-MPH heater past James Myler with two runners on to slam the door shut on a crucial 3-1 victory over the upstart Longwood Lions. Everyone in attendance was on edge with the potential go-ahead run at the plate. Everyone except for Eggleston. “I knew what I had to do an...

Kyle Brennan Living Out Dream To Coach at The Professional Level

(Photo Credit: James P. McCoy/Buffalo News) by Justin Joseph Not every athlete gets the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to coach the sport that they love at the next-level. Kyle Brennan, 25, got his chance on February 1st , when he was hired by a professional baseball team, in the Houston Astros system, to become a Minor League Player Development Coach at the Advanced-A level. “I was obviously ecstatic,” Brennan said regarding his initial reaction to the job offer. ”I texted my family first and then afterwards Tom Downey [who] is the Phillies scout I knew for years. He has been pulling for me to get into pro baseball for a while now,” Brennan said.   Brennan began to really get serious about baseball in high school, where he played for Ward Melville. In high school, Brennan served as a capt...

Ward Melville Remains a Championship Contender Entering 2020

by Tony Genualdo Max Nielsen strikes out 18 batters to send Ward Melville to the Suffolk County AA Finals ! pic.twitter.com/RtJrqe4y4p — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 31, 2019 Ward Melville’s run to the Suffolk County title game last year was just the latest in a string of successful seasons for the Patriots of League I. Connetquot would win the championship over Ward Melville in three games, but Coach Lou Petrucci said that he couldn’t have been prouder of his team. “Our kids learned to play in some amazingly energetic and competitive environments,” said Petrucci. “They well exceeded our expectations.” Among those kids from last year were Matty Maurer and Brady Doran, two players who were dominant at the top of the batting order for the team. They would set the tables for fello...
