The 13u Connecticut Cubs defeated the LI Strong in a best-of-three series to capture the inaugural Kings Point Classic hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The Cubs played outstanding baseball in all facets of the game and won by the scores of 12-1 and 16-3. The Cubs are in their first year as an organization – but they are off to quite a strong start. Their first tournament was Memorial Day Weekend at the Field of Dreams in Iowa. Playing in a 34-team field, they compiled a record of 7-0 and captured first place. They followed that up with two more convincing wins to bring their overall record to an unblemished 9-0 on the season. The team is composed of 13 players – 8 of which all attend the same school and have been playing together for several years. They comp...
While it might not be as fruitful as the 2019 season in which several teams were competing for conference championships and NYIT reached the Division-II World Series and LIU Post fell just short, we still were treated to a great – albeit shortened – 2021 collegiate season. Here we are on Memorial Day Weekend and we have two Division-I teams, one Division-II and one Division-III team still alive. Here’s what’s on tap: Division-I: –Stony Brook will host the America East tournament beginning this afternoon. The No. 1 Seawolves will host Maine beginning at 11am. The teams did not face each other this season, but Stony Brook has a 51-31 record against them all-time. Expect Sam Turcotte to get the start for the Seawolves. He has a 2.53 ERA on the season. Stony Brook...

Division-I St. John’s lost to UCONN, 4-3, to open up their weekend series. They led 3-1 in the 7th, but the Huskies scored on a squeeze to cut the deficit to two and then in the 8th, a two-run go-ahead double by Kyler Fedko (3-for-5), gave them the lead. Carson Bartels drew a walk in the 9th but they were unable to get him around to score. Austin Peterson earned his sixth win of the season. Joe Joe Rodriguez was tagged with the loss. The Johnnies had 10 hits but struck out 13 times and stranded 8 runners on base. They fell to 14-16 on the season and will play a DH today beginning at 12. Hofstra lost to Northeastern, 13-1, as they have now allowed 35 runs over the past two games. Jack Jett was tagged with the loss, he allowed 7 ER over 6 IP, yielding 11 hits and 3 walks. It was Good Friday for those who celebrate, but it was also a really good friday for Stony Brook, who kept their win streak going, LIU and USMMA on an exceptionally cold April day in the northeast. Here’s how it went down: Division-I Stony Brook stayed red-hot with a double header sweep over Hartford. In Game 1, Sam Turcotte started and earned the win. Hartford was able to get out to an early 2-0 lead in the first on a sac fly and an RBI ground out to second. He settled in after that and was lights-out moving forward. He went the complete seven innings, allowing just 2 runs (1 ER), allowing five hits and striking out six. Shane Paradine hit a sac fly to score Evan Giordano in the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the fourth inning, a bases loaded walk by Evan Giordano tied t...
The United States Merchant Marine Academy has opened up its brand new field, Ray Bartoszek Field or simply nicknamed “The Ray”, for the 2021 season which kicks off today. The state-of-the-art facility is fully turfed, features stadium-style seating behind home plate as well as turfed bullpen and batting cage areas behind the 3rd base side dugout. The facility will also add a new scoreboard in the future. They will finally open up their 2021 season today against SJC-Brooklyn after a lengthy pause due to COVID concerns within the school. They have practiced three times in six weeks. Assistant coach Lou Bernardi said, “I really like the team chemistry. The boys have really handled adversity well. They stayed close throughout the shutdown. The senior leadership has been great...
by Eric Belyea Published writer, podcast host, baseball coach, philanthropist. When it comes to Long Island baseball, Lou Bernardi has done it all. A former player under the Legendary Bob Hirschfield at NYIT, Bernardi accumulated over 160 innings pitched during his four year career as a member of the Bears. After his collegiate career, Bernardi pitched professionally for the St. George Roadrunners of the Golden League, as well as the New York Federals of the New York State league. Once his professional playing career was over, that is when Bernardi began on a path that would eventually change his life. Bernardi’s first stop of his coaching career began at his alma mater, NYIT, where he was the third base coach, coaching at the Division-I level. He then went on to become the pitching coac...
And the St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles are the 2018 Skyline Conference Champions! pic.twitter.com/XsYIblRhGb — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 6, 2018 Like the legendary Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra said, “it’s deja vu all over again!” Just as they did in 2016, the St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles captured the Skyline Conference championship in an 11-inning extra inning thriller at Farmingdale State College. The big hit came by pinch-hitter Gehrig Montoro to score Tyler Crafa on a well-struck line drive down the left field line to send his team and the St. Joseph’s faithful into a frenzy. “I said to him right before he got up ‘this is what makes the season, this one hit’ and he went up there and got it!” said fifth year Head Coach Rick Garrett. Reliever Anthony Caminiti, who came o...
Walk-Off suicide squeeze by Tyler Schrimpf and Farmingdale wins it 2-1 in 9 innings ! pic.twitter.com/WRVLyyDZuc — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 23, 2019 (Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared on March 24, 2019.) The games were slated to be nine and seven innings, but that was not nearly enough to determine today’s winners. These are the two premier teams in the Skyline Conference at the moment, and the matchup more than lived up to the billing with a 13-inning and a 9-inning game, with the teams splitting the DH. Here’s how it went down: Game 1: This game appeared like the Rams would be in control all game. They scored two runs just three batters into the game, with RBI hits by Vinny Rice and Steven Burke, but that was all they would get for the game. USMMA st...
Merchant Marine Academy captain Vincenzo Alteri discusses the upcoming season. He batted .421 with 33 RBI last year pic.twitter.com/8VskCzSHiC — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 4, 2020 Although they haven’t come away with a championship, you can make the case that United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) has been the most consistent team in the Skyline Conference over the past two seasons. In 2018, they took St. Joseph’s to the 11th inning of the Finals at Farmingdale State College, and last year they won 28 games, entered the playoffs as the No. 2 seed – and won their first conference tournament game – before losing twice to get eliminated. They face the challenge of replacing their ace of the previous two years – Andrew Spinnenweber, as well ...
As many people know, it was an extremely fruitful year for college baseball on Long Island. While it is easy to see the Division-I teams like Stony Brook on ESPN and a Division-II team in the College World Series, the success of the local Division-III teams can fly under the radar. It has been our mission at Axcess Baseball to shine a light on those programs and we do so by segments like the Fall Ball Series Presented by the Greene Turtle, or covering a double header in March, or having wall-to-wall coverage of the Skyline Conference tournament, or having the players compete in a Home Run Derby, or honored at an Awards Banquet. It’s good to see the players get recognized by outside publications too, though. The big one came out this week with ABCA/Rawlings releasing their All-Region ...
Stop me if you’ve heard this before–Old Westbury advances to face Farmingdale State in the Skyline Conference Finals. For the first time since 2015, but as they did every year from 2010-2015 the Rams and Panthers will square off the right to the capture the Skyline Conference Championship. The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Shaun Kaminski in the bottom of the first, but the Mariners answered back on an RBI single by Garrett Reddeck. Brandon Wilson, one of the stars of the game, laced an RBI single to center to score Sean Paprocki to give the Panthers the 2-1 lead in the second, but Reddeck’s second RBI single of the game tied it back up at 2-2 against Panthers starter Adam Heidenfelder. In the top of the fifth, the Mariners showcased their speed when ...
