Generally the biggest test of amateur baseball comes when a young ballplayer makes the switch to the big fields. Many players dominant at the younger ages, only to meet their match as the deeper dimensions result in harmless flyouts and endless frustration. That was not the case for Patrick Dalien of Team Beast ...
Wow ! Joey Lionetti fires a no-hitter and for the first time in their 72-year history Massapequa Coast is headed to the Little League World Series ! pic.twitter.com/NROC1fF8i6 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 13, 2022 in 2022, Joey Lionetti introduced himself to the baseball world by firing a no-hitter on ESPN to send Massapequa Coast to the LLWS for the first time in their 72-year history. In 2023, Lionetti had a ton of success on the baseball field, albeit with much less viewers. He played middle school baseball and in his first start, he struck out 9 batters, gave up two hits and 0 runs. He went on to represent Team Northeast in the Team USA Nationals down in Cary, NC. He was also selected to the PG National All-State Select Championships in Texas where he was named Player ...
This is the 18th installment of the Up Next series in which we highlight the top underclassmen on Long Island. Previously, we featured Everett Zarzicki, Brian Brower, Stellan Zangari, Ryan Bush, Bryce Cutrone, Justin Ortiz, Colin Raymond, Jagger Adamo, JD Duffy, Chris Sultana, Matt Zambriski, Tucker Brown, Christian Calabro, Derek & Ryan Yormack, Andrew Poxon, Tristan Garcia and Evan Fallon. Special thanks to State Farm Ken Kortright Agency for sponsoring this year’s series. When it comes to improving as a ballplayer, it always helps to play against older competition. You can find out a lot about yourself when you’re not always the best player on the field. In the case of JT Bonventre, he is still often the best player on the field even when playing up. This past season, he...
Evan Fallon (St. Anthony’s 2027) pic.twitter.com/tCbuoNiGcG — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 19, 2024 Despite sustaining an injury in the summer that limited his game-action, Evan Fallon recovered and posted a terrific fall season for the East Coast Lumberjacks. He compiled 45 at bats playing between the 2028s and 2026s. In that time, he notched 16 hits with 5 doubles, 2 triples and 12 RBIs. He was also able to notch 17 strikeouts over his 11 innings. Since that time, he has gained strength and has been reportedly siting 80 MPH and touching 83 MPH. This is for a 9th grader that hasn’t played a game of varsity ball yet at St. Anthony’s. His older brother, Joe, also attends St. Anthony’s and is one year older – he is committed to Long Island University....
Top 4: plenty of action in this game – a 2-R single by Tristan Garcia and North Babylon opens up a 9-4 lead pic.twitter.com/829aNslIGO — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 31, 2023 It is rare that you see a high school freshman conduct himself with the maturity of a senior. By all accounts, Tristan Garcia is that type of person. He was also talented enough to start all 23 games and bat .395 for a playoff team in Suffolk Class AA, then continue that success right into the travel ball circuit with MVP Baseball. He batted .394 with six doubles, 16 RBIs and went 6-1 on the mound with a 1.93 ERA and 34 strikeouts. Garcia is an exciting player and will be a major part of the North Babylon Bulldogs core for the next three seasons. That is bad news for opposing teams. I spoke with hi...

Sometimes it’s easy to forget how young a player is, when they carry themselves a certain way and play at a high level. It’s even easier to forget when they are head & shoulders above their competition – both literally and figuratively. Fourteen-year-old, 6’3 RHP Andrew Poxon was light...
Sat down with Ryan & Derek Yormack at Bellmore JFK’s winter workout. The twin brothers both committed to Duke University as 8th graders @BellmoreJFK @CoachGattusJFK pic.twitter.com/Jq92EC7kRv — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) January 28, 2024 One wears New Balance, the other wears Adidas. That’s the only way Bellmore JFK coach Mike Gattus could distinguish between twin brothers Derek and Ryan Yormack when he first met them. You can’t begrudge him, either, as the identical twins look the same in every regard. While they may look and act the same, their play on the field is different from nearly every other kid their age. Most 8th graders aren’t like Derek and Ryan Yormack. As 8th graders, the twins shocked the Long Island baseball community by both committing to D...

Special thanks to State Farm Ken Kortright Agency for sponsoring this year’s series.) It’s not often that a freshman is called up with two weeks left in the season and winds up winning you a playoff game. That’s exactly what happened with Hauppauge as freshman infielder Tucker Brown came up against Hills West RHP Ryan Muskopf and hit a go-ahead two-run single up the middle to break a 6-6 tie. Hauppauge held on to win by the score of 8-6. Hauppauge freshman Tu...
It is no secret that players on Long Island have long been overlooked. More specifically, players from the east end have been overlooked as they have to not only deal with the cold weather, but the issue that some college coaches and pro scouts don’t often make the trek out east. Some players have broken through recently, specifically Kyle McGowin of Pierson and Chris Pike of Southampton, but the challenge remains. Travel organizations like the East Coast Lumberjacks are helping to eliminate that challenge as they travel around and play in the most competitive tournaments in the country during the summer. Riverhead RHP/INF Matt Zambrinski is one of those players that is hoping to break through. The big righty was called up to varsity as an 8th grader. His coach, Kevin Kerman, had the...
(Editor’s Note: This is the tenth installment of the popular ‘Up Next’ Series in which we highlight the top underclassmen on Long Island. Previously, we featured Everett Zarzicki, Brian Brower, Stellan Zangari, Ryan Bush, Bryce Cutrone, Justin Ortiz, Colin Raymond, Jagger Adamo and JD Duffy. Special thanks to State Farm Ken Kortright Agency for sponsoring this year’s series.) Massapequa has long been considered one of the best baseball towns on Long Island. They currently have won six consecutive Nassau County Class AA Championships and won the Long Island Championship as recently as 2022. Much of that has to do with having a huge talent pool, and a top notch coaching staff that has allowed them to generate a never ending line of high-end players. Massapequa freshma...

He batted .390 with a .480 OBP, 1.045 OPS, 3 HRs, 50 RBIS over 148 at bats. On the mound, he allowed just 1 ER over 20.1 innings. He’s only in 10th grade, so look out for him to be an impact player at the varsity level for the next 3 seasons. His summer coach, Joe Fusco, spoke glowingly of him: ...
