Just about every winning team has a strong defensive catcher that can lead his pitching staff. And if they can get some offensive production from that player, then it’s a bonus. Comsewogue freshman catcher Kevin Schnupp Jr. is one of those two-way catchers. He has been lauded for his defensive abilities, his leadership of the pitching staff but he also handled the bat extremely well in 2020. Here was his stats. AVG: .413 2B: 19 3B: 3 BBs: 17 Rs: 34 OBP: .540 His father, Kevin Schnupp Sr, is the longtime head coach of Sachem East, where he helped lead the Arrows to the Suffolk County title in 2005. He has been pleased with the progress of his son: “Kevin has really progressed so much over the past year,” he said. He has grown up on the sidelines of the Sachem East baseball program and has really used it to his advantage. He has become a student of the game. He mimics his work ethic after many of the top players that have come through our program and we are really fortunate that he has had such great role models (coaches and former players) throughout his playing years, so far, it’s a lot of fun for me being able to spend so much time with him working on-and-off the field. A lot of late night cage work or blocking drills in the driveway. I am really impressed with his drive,” he added. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say… Who are some individual’s that have had a positive influence on your career? Some people that have had a positive influence on me are my dad, Coach Filippi, Coach Prisco and Coach Downey. Also, all the coaches at CATCHERMTRX including Coach Reyes, Coach Page, Coach Brennan and Coach McKay. Another coach who really taught me a lot and made me into a good baseball player was Coach Caputo from St. Joseph’s. Logan O’Hoppe also has had a big influence on me. My grandparents also have had a big influence on me. Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball and why? Some of my favorite MLB players are Christian Yelich, Dustin Pedroia and JT Realmuto. These guys are some of my favorite players because I like how they approach the game and how they play the game. Who are some teammates you have gotten close with? Out of my whole baseball career I have always played with Luke Filippi and Logan Prisco. Us three always hangout whether it’s inside of baseball or outside, going from taking BP together and training together. Also this past summer, me and Matt Galli got close. What moment has been the biggest thrill of your career? Two moments stick out in my mind that were high intensity, big thrill plays. Over the summer, I hit a double in the playoffs to bring our team up and give us a big lead and seal the win against a good All Stars team. Another moment was in the fall when we were playing Team Steel in the semis and there was a play at the plate where I caught the ball from my second baseman, Matt Galli, and there was a collision at the plate and I held onto the ball to end the game. Do you work with any private instructors? I work with hitting instructor Chris Scura. Ever since I have been going to him he has really helped me become a good hitter. I also work with Coach Downey a lot. I have spent a lot of time working with him. Big props to my dad too – I hit with him a lot and he really made me a good player. How have you enjoyed your time with the Titans? The Titan organization has been great. From the coaching staff to the competition this summer, we played in a lot of competitive tournaments. With the Titans, I am always able to go up to the facility and hit whenever and that has been a big part. Their CATCHERMTRX clinic and their Prime Infield Clinic have really helped me out a lot. What did you plan on working on this offseason? This offseason I want to improve on my strength and flexibility. I got to Infiniti twice a week for that. I have spent a lot of time improving my swing. Also I want to polish my receiving, throwing and blocking as a catcher. What are your goals for 2021? I would like to start on varsity for Comsewogue and I would like to have a very successful 16u Titans summer ball season. How would you evaluate your 2020 season? I feel like I had a very strong season behind the dish and my hitting progressed throughout the year. I really enjoyed being forced to compete for a really strong Titans team. Favorite app on your phone? Snap or Instagram Favorite musical artist? Morgan Wallen Any superstitions? I hate washing my pants. Favorite pre-game meal? I really love chicken nuggets.

The post Up Next Powered by The Yard Sports Academy: Kevin Schnupp Jr appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

Defense is critical behind the plate. There was nothing soft about the contact that was coming off the bat of freshman Zach Rosenzweig (Plainedge 2024) yesterday. At one point, we picked up one of the baseballs that he hit particularly well. The ball looked as if it had been through a meat grinder. And no it wasn’t like that before. When Zach squares the ball up, it travels a long way. Thanks to technology like Rapsodo, we can now measure that, too. Last week during the clinic hosted by Anthony Iapoce, he recorded an exit velocity of 90.3 with a wood bat. That’s well-above the average for the varsity level, let alone those in his age group. pic.twitter.com/E2ED0S6f3G — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) December 22, 2020 His summer coach for the Knights Nation MXE Academy, Joey Giacmantonio, described a home run he hit this summer in Ohio that was the furthest ball he saw hit. That type of skillset is highly valued in today’s game. Prior to COVID, Rosenzweig stated that he was going to be playing JV as an eighth grader. I fully expect him to be asked to play at the varsity level at some point this season. I had a chance to speak with him yesterday and here’s what he had to say… What are you looking to improve on this off-season? I’m looking to improve the strength in my legs. I noticed you work out at 7 Tool Catching clinic, why do you like going there? I really like going there for the environment and that I can just focus on catching because that’s the only position that we work on. I like that there’s kids older than me because I want to compete with them and I look up to the older kids. Who’s your favorite player in Major League Baseball? My favorite player is J.T. Realmuto because he’s really quick and I want to play like him. He’s also not just a good catcher, but a well-rounded player. Who’s your favorite team? My favorite team is the Mets and my favorite player is probably James McCann. What has been the best moment on a baseball field for you? The best moment was probably this year after winning the PG Tournament. Everyone was just so happy. That’s the biggest one you can win. How long have you been playing with the Knights? I’ve been playing since 9u. Why do you enjoy playing for them? I like playing with the Knights because we get along so well. It’s like a family; not a huge organization. What was it like playing during the pandemic? It was crazy – the schedule seemed to change every week because of tournaments being cancelled. We were supposed to go to Florida but that got cancelled. Was baseball always your No. 1 sport? No I play football (TE and DE) and I used to play lacrosse until but I chose to switch to baseball in 2014. Favorite music to listen to pre-game? Rap and country. Favorite app on your phone? Snapchat. Pre-game meal? I don’t like to eat anything before a game. Okay, so favorite postgame meal? Chick-Fil-A or Chipotle. Favorite vacation spot? Florida. Where would be your preferred destination to attend college? Probably down south

The post Up Next Powered by The Yard Sports Academy: Zach Rosenzweig appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

(Editor’s Note: This is the eighth installment of the popular ‘Up Next’ Series which highlights the top underclassmen on Long Island. When you’re looking to build a team, it’s important that you have a strong presence up-the-middle. New Mets GM Jared Porter specifically mentioned that in Monday’s press conference when discussing the needs of the Mets. They addressed that need on Saturday with the signing of free agent catcher James McCann. He’s a player that really improved his pitch framing (sixth in the MLB), he throws out 46 percent of would-be base stealers and he also crushes left-handed pitching. Sachem North will be hoping that they can count on that type of production behind the dish in 2021 from sophomore Brandon O’Neill. The hard-hitting catcher put up a huge summer season in 2020 for Team BEAST and has a bright future ahead of him. Brandon O’Neill (Sachem North 2023) with a max exit velo of 86.3 pic.twitter.com/9cvT7uFRfK — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) November 8, 2020 I had a chance to catch a glimpse of him at Blue Chip Prospects’ Pitchers & Catchers Showcase back in November and was very impressed with both facets of his game. His 2020 season was outstanding and here are his statistics: AVG: .392 OBP: .496 SLG: .619 ABs: 97 Hits: 38 2B: 13 3B: 3 HRs: 2 RBI: 34 Runs: 33 BBs: 20 I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say… Who are some people that have had a positive influence on your baseball career? I will always be thankful for my first travel Coach Rob, who believed in me and showed me the fundamentals and the right way to play the game. I would not be where I am now, if not for my current coach Jose and Coach Gabby who have had a huge impact on my baseball career. They always push me to be the best player I can be and have done nothing but better me as an individual and a baseball player. Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball? I have always looked up to Derek Jeter and Aaron Judge because I love the way they handle themselves as players and as people. Why do you wear the Number 25? My jersey number was always 5 growing up and when I started playing for Beast someone already wore that number. Since Derek Jeter is one of my role models, I took his number 2 and combined it with 5. Now my number is 25. How did you stay sharp during quarantine? During quarantine, I made sure to keep up with my school work. I also spent a lot of time outside working on my swing. I lifted weights to keep my body in shape and ready for the 2020 season. How would you evaluate your 2020 season? All around, my team and I had a pretty successful season. We won multiple tournaments and overall played like a family. We faced very good competition and were challenged. I would say personally I also had a good season. My pop time, speed, hitting and fielding al developed throughout the year. How have you enjoyed your time with the Beast? I have been with the BEAST organization since I was 11. During that time, BEAST has given me multiple opportunities to compete at a high level against very talented teams and improve my overall game. What has been the biggest thrill of your playing career? There have been countless intense games and thrilling moments through the years. One moment that stands out to me the most is the NYBC tournament when our team beat the number six ranked team in the country. It was a great game to be a part of and something I will never forget. Best baseball trip you’ve been on? Growing up, Cooperstown was one of my most memorable and fun tournaments. I am very much looking forward to playing in Georgia and Florida in the 2021 season. What do you want to work on this off-season? This off-season I have been working on my strength and speed. I have also been focusing on improving my defense and offense, getting smoother with my hands and swing. I am excited to see my hard work pay off next year. Quick preview of Sachem North 2021 season – who are some impact guys? Some of the impact guys for Sachem North are my sophomore teammates Paul Fiene and Nick DeLuca. They both have great work ethic and passion for the game. Like myself, they have been working very hard in the off-season to improve their game. Favorite app on your phone? My favorite app on my phone would either be Instagram or YouTube. They are both great ways to stay updated with sports and watch game highlights. Favorite musical artist? My favorite musical artists would be sleepy Hollow and Lil Uzi Vert. I love listening to them while I practice and while I am working out. Favorite type of food? Thanksgiving food is my favorite. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and all the sides. Dream car? I don’t have a particular dream car, but when I start driving I would like to get a black truck. Favorite vacation spot? I love to go on cruises and explore different countries and islands. My favorite spots so far have been the Dominican Republic and Bermuda. I would love the opportunity to play in the Dominican Republic one day.

The post Up Next Powered by The Yard Sports Academy: Brandon O’Neill appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

(Editor’s Note: This is the sixth installment of the popular ‘Up Next’ Series Powered by The Yard Sports Academy. The motivation behind the award was simple – pick the most talented individual that performed exceptionally well over the week. When the coaches were surveyed, there was a consensus No. 1 – T.J. Bradford. At the time, T.J. was just 10-years-old, but he was clearly deserving of the award. His stats match up to the eye test. Over the past three seasons, he has amassed a nearly unfathomable 108 home runs while playing on the small fields. When he was 11, he played 115 games and batted .581 with 116 runs scored 171 RBI over 291 at bats. The Hewlett naive is now in 8th grade, and was going to be given the opportunity to play varsity as a 7th grader. He has an insatiable desire to be great- which he documents on his YouTube reality series. He often wakes up and hits at 6:35am before school. He has exceptional genes, as his father, Terence, was a running back at Middlebury College in the early 90s. Bradford plays for numerous travel teams and has played in Texas, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Kentucky over the past couple years – constantly challenging himself to become the best version of himself. His father has expressed a desire to send him to one of the schools in the NSCHSAA – which consists of St. Anthony’s, St. Dominic’s, Holy Trinity, St. John the Baptist, Chaminade and Kellenberg. They are still deciding on which one to attend. In the meantime, he’ll continue to work hard on and off the field. His father made sure to emphasize that school work is a priority and he maintains a 98 average this year. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say… Who are some people that have had a positive effect on your baseball career? There are many people who’ve had a positive effect on my baseball career so far. My parents are definitely at the top of the list. They have always had my best interest at heart. They push me to be the best in whatever I do, whether it’s baseball, basketball, or school. I’ve also had some great coaches. Right now my coaches, Kerry McAllister and Natty Brown, have also been positive influences. Lastly, Coach Rademex Velasquez started coaching me when I was 7 and was always been there for me and has helped me a lot. Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball? My favorite players in the M.L.B are Javier Baez, Francisco Lindor, and Fernando Tatis Jr. I enjoy watching them play because they are shortstops, just like me, and they bring a lot of energy and excitement to the game. They make it fun to watch. What’s been the best memory of your playing career? My best memory on the baseball field has definitely been my first home run. It was against a team from Canada, and it helped my team win the game and the tournament. What was it like playing during the pandemic? How did you stay sharp during quarantine? Playing through the pandemic wasn’t that weird. However, it was annoying that we had to put a delay to the beginning of the season. My father and I got impatient, so we started traveling down south to Florida and Georgia so that I could play games in early June. Prior to this however, my whole family helped to build a batting cage in my backyard so that I could hit and be ready when the season started. Do you work with any private instructors? I’ve been blessed to work with a number of quality private instructors including Brian Anderson, Willie Ortonez, Reid Gorecki, Mel Wearing, Ryan Roman. What do you plan on working on this off-season? This off-season I’m going to work on identifying and hitting different pitches. Also as I transition to the 60/90 field I want to be stronger and faster than ever. So my off season will be laser focused on improving on these things. What are your goals for the 2021 season? Some goals I have are to improve my hands and footwork from a fielding aspect. With hitting, I just want to stay consistent, working on identifying different pitches and making adjustments to hit them. But most importantly I want to make sure I help my team win in anyway they need me to. Who are some teammates you’ve become close with? I’m close with most of my teammates. However, I’ve grown the closest with the other middle infielder on my team, Myles Monell, and third baseman, Kaleb Traylor. Best baseball trip you’ve been on? The best trip I’ve ever been on was last July when I went to Atlanta for the PG World Series and then flew from there to California for the USA Tryouts. Favorite app on your phone? Snapchat Favorite meal? Chicken Favorite musical artists? Lil Tjay and Pop Smoke Dream Car? Rolls Royce Wraith Any superstitions? Don’t step on the infield dirt before the game.

The post Up Next Powered By The Yard Sports Academy: T.J.

Snapchat

Favorite meal?

Chicken

Favorite musical artists?

Lil Tjay and Pop Smoke

Dream Car?

Rolls Royce Wraith

Any superstitions?

Don’t step on the infield dirt before the game.

The post Up Next Powered By The Yard Sports Academy: T.J. To read the previous articles, here is Josh Knoth, Ben Cohen, Andrew Koshy and Sebastian Lippman. Mount Sinai is building a powerhouse pitching staff. The Mustangs last captured the Class A County Championship in 2016 in large part to a dominant pitching staff anchored by Sam Kessler and Brandon Bonanno. They have high aspirations entering 2021 as they have numerous high-end pitchers like Miami-commit J.T. Caruso, Ithaca-commit Dan Kellachan, 6’4 Max Reichenbach and another stud 2023 RHP in Chris Batuyios. Chris Batuyios (Mount Sinai 2023) pic.twitter.com/9oqk2wWdvJ — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 26, 2020 Over the course of 26.2 IP in the 2020 season, the flame-throwing sophomore struck out 41 batters, allowed just seven hits an allowed 0 runs (Per Perfect Game website). That’s right, that’s an unblemished 0.00 ERA and 0.71 ERA. His fastball has touched 87 MPH which is head & shoulders above the average velocity for pitchers his age. He plays for the East Coast Lumberjacks and works with pitching instructor Tyler Badamo. The former minor leaguer Badamo had the following to say about Batuyios “Over the past six years I have worked with a lot of talented pitchers of all ages. Chris Batuyios has been with me for three years and he has been an absolute pleasure to work with. His work ethic and his ability to comprehend an advanced level of instruction is truly impressive from a sophomore in high school. Chris’s consistent work both on and off the field allows him to be extremely ahead of his teammates and he is only scratching the surface of his potential. This is the type of student-athlete that has an unlimited ceiling. He has an impressive command of his three pitches, a high-caliber velocity on his fastball and strong composure, mental attitude that brings so much attention. On top of all of that, he is also a very impressive student with near perfect grades. He is hands down a college coach’s dream athlete and whoever gets him to commit is going to be very happy. I am extremely happy and excited to see what the future holds for him and I am glad to be a part of the journey.” I had a chance to speak with Chris and here’s what he had to say… Who are some people that have had a positive influence on your career? My family has had a positive influence on my career, especially my dad. My dad has been taking me to every game since I was little and he taught me how to pitch when I was young. He also taught me how to workout and get a lot stronger. Some other people that have had a positive infleucne onmy career are my coaches – Coach Reichenbach, Coach Pembroke and my old travel team coach, Coach Wally. Do you work with any private instructors? I work with my pitching coach Tyler Badamo. I have been working with Tyler for three years now and he has helped me so much in developing and he has showed me how to actually pitch. Also, he has taught me basically everything I know about pitching. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be close to where I am right now. Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball and why? My favorite player in Major League Baseball right now is Trevor Bauer. Bauer’s my favorite because he’s one of the best pitchers and he’s a beast on the mound. Also, Bauer has a very funny and cocky personality. Mount Sinai appears loaded in the pitching staff – can you talk about some of those players and what you think the ceiling of the team is? The Mount Sinai pitching staff is stacked this year. We have Dan Kellachan – who just committed to Ithaca, Kyle Salvati, Devin Carros, JT Caruso, and my boy Max Reichenbach. All of those pitchers have great potential. The ceiling for this team is very high so hopefully we have a season this year. How have you enjoyed your time with the East Coast Lumberjacks? The Lumberjacks are like a family. Every game we play is always a high intensity close game. The team is a very competitive and high-talent team. My teammates always got my back on the field and they make every play behind me when I’m pitching. The potential this team has is crazy if we just put in the work. I can’t wait for the season next year. When did you experience your biggest jump in velocity? I experienced my biggest jump in velocity from 8th grade to 9th grade. I went from throwing 70 MPH in 8th grade to topping out at 87 MPH in the summer of 9th grade. What do you plan on working on this off-season? This off-season I’m planning on working on my off-speed pitches so I can throw them in whatever count to whatever batter I want. I also plan on getting a lot stronger especially in my lower body to generate more power when I’m pitching. What are your goals for 2021? My main goals for 2021 are mastering my off-speed pitches in game and getting up to 90 MPH. Favorite app on your phone? Instagram Favorite meal? Spaghetti and meatballs Favorite baseball experience you’ve had? I had two favorite baseball experiences. One was when I got to experience Roman Kimball pitch for us and get 17 strikeouts against the Titans and the other one was a game I played against Team Beast 2022 National. That game was in Diamond Nation and I hit major traffic so I was about 30 minutes late. Once I showed up it was the 2nd inning, so I warmed up quick and I came in in the 3rd inning with 0 outs and bases loaded and we were down by 5. I let up 1 run that inning from a passed ball and I struck out two. From there on, I shut them down going 5 innings with 10 strikeouts and only letting up 2 hits. In the 5th inning, the score was 6-3 we were still down and there was two outs and bases loaded. Josh Knoth came up and hit a crazy grand slam to put us up by 1, then I went back out and shut them down for two innings and we won it. Dream Car? Ferrari 488 Favorite vacation spot? Greece

The post Up Next Powered by The Yard Sports Academy: Chris Batuyios appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

This is the fifth installment of the Up Next 2020 Series which highlights the top underclassmen on Long Island. When it comes to youth baseball teams, they are as good as it gets. Ben Cohen hits a walk-off grand slam to send LIB Prime into Think Pink championship pic.twitter.com/EBFXiyS37s — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 5, 2020 Much of that damage involved power-hitting Ben Cohen. The Massapequa native was downright dominant this fall for LIB Prime. Games Played 29 AVG: .487 Runs: 31 Hits: 39 XBH: 14 HR: 7 RBI: 36 K: 6 SB: 10-for-11 He led his team in all categories except for doubles – where he was tied for second. Clearly, he was a critical piece for a team that went 22-6-1 in the fall. As many people know, Massapequa is a hot-bed for baseball talent and they have won the Class AA Long Island Championship three straight years. Although he’s still two years away from high school, Ben certainly possesses the type of talent that should make him an exciting player at the next level. I had a chance to talk to him and here’s what he had to say… Who are some people that have had a positive influence on your career? My dad has been coaching me since I started playing baseball up until I started playing travel baseball. He does not put any pressure on me and he is my biggest fan. Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball and why? Aaron Judge: he is a Yankee, he has a cannon for an arm and he hits bombs Nolan Arenado: He is one of the best fielders in baseball and he plays third base and hits for power, like me. Do you work with any private instructors? I went for a few lessons with multiple instructors but since covid started I haven’t gone to one since. What has been your most exciting moment on a baseball field? This summer, I hit three HR in three at bats cat Baseball Heaven but my most exciting moment was when I hit a walk-off grand slam in the semi-final game of a BBH tournament. Can you talk a little about the LIB Prime team? Tell us about the 2020 season and some players that have really performed well. Our team is very strong. Everybody on LIB Prime are studs and deserve to be where they are. Every single one of them contributed to our success this season. What are your plans for the off-season to improve your game? My main goal for this off-season is to work on my blocking because I’m a catcher and I need to get catcher. What’s that feeling like connecting on a HR in a big moment? When you hit a clutch HR you don’t really think about how important it is in the moment but when you look back on it, you really think how clutch it was. Favorite apps on your phone? Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube Favorite musical artist? Pop Smoke Favorite type of food? Italian Dream car? Lamborghini Veneno Favorite vacation spot? My favorite that I have gone to is Disney World and Las Vegas. But I want to go to either Bora Bora or Colorado.

The post Up Next Powered By The Yard Sports Academy: Ben Cohen appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

(This is our fourth installment of the 2020-’21 “Up Next” Series Powered by The Yard Sports Academy. Young stud alert 🚨 Sebastian Lippman (Plainview JFK 2024) sitting 84-86 MPH pic.twitter.com/U9tkENfQ4h — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) November 8, 2020 Often times as a scout or reporter you attend a showcase or tournament and are underwhelmed with the product on the field. As a scout, it’s easy to stay quiet and walk away if you’re bored. As a reporter, you have to try to make something out of nothing. Being that I am both, I have to walk that fine line of telling the truth as a scout but generating buzz as a reporter. Other times, it’s really easy. An example of this was on November 8 at Prospect Sports for a pitcher & catcher showcase run by Blue Chip Prospects. This event featured about 40 pitchers, ranging in age of high school freshmen to senior. While several players performed extremely well, the one that stood out most to me was one of the youngest players there. Freshmen Sebastian Lippman of Plainview JFK is a 14-year-old with mechanics and velocity well beyond his years. The hard-throwing youngster sat 84-86 MPH, more advanced than almost any other player in attendance and certainly more than his peers. He plays summer ball for the Body Armor Titans and was dominant this summer on the mound. As the closer, he pitched 15.1 innings this summer, allowing just three hits while striking out 30 and not allowing a run. That will play. Entering 2021, he will be given a shot to play at the varsity level. Plainview JFK has another stud in Dylan Banner, and that duo has the potential to rejuvenate the program back to their peak of 2018 when Mark Faello and Tyler Marinaccio were dominating and leading the Hawks to back-to-back conference titles. I had a chance to speak with Sebastian and here’s what he had to say… Who are some people that have had a positive influence on your career? Some people that have had a positive influence on my baseball career include my dad – who practices with me all the time. He rushes home from a hard day at work to make sure he has enough daylight to play with me. My mom takes up a lot of her time taking me to a lot of my baseball games and practices after her long days. My coaches throughout the years have pushed me to be the best that I can be. They have put me in spots to succeed and shine. Who is your favorite player in Major League Baseball and why? I love watching Mike Trout because he is the ultimate hustle guy despite having all the talent and being a 5-tool player. I also admire Mariano Rivera because I can see parts of me in him and I wish I could’ve seen more of him. He performed best in the toughest spots in games. Do you work with any private instructors? I hit at Max Effort with Brad Jackson. He has helped me with the mental aspect of hitting as well as the physical things. I train at LIFT with Ryan Glueckert who has taught me to never be too high or too low which has helped the mental aspect of pitching. He also teaches me how to take care of my body in the way I eat, stretch and train. I also train with John Dunlop with WOKE AF. He always stresses the importance of form, my diet and being a good person. Can you talk about your experience playing with the Body Armor Titans and some teammates you’ve grown close with? Playing for the Body Armor Titans over the last three years has been a great experience. I’ve been lucky enough to have great coaches including Brian Anderson, Brendan Sullivan, Andrew Aschettino, Jim McGowan and Gregg Sarra. I have formed great relationships with my teammates. I want to give a special thanks to my catchers; Tyler Cook and Drew McGowan, who push me to be the best I can be on the mound. How would you evaluate your performance this season? I thought my hitting this year was not as good as I would have liked it to be so I will work extra hard on my swing and timing. I will continue to train and improve my physical fitness and continue to work on my flexibility and ankle mobility this off-season. When did you experience the biggest gain in velocity? I experienced the biggest gain in velocity over the last two years. In the winter after 12u, I topped out at 71 MPH. The following fall I hit 78 MPH. Just recently I got clocked at 86 MPH at the showcase at Prospect Sports. What has been the biggest thrill of your playing career? The biggest thrill in my baseball career has been when I threw complete game shutouts in back-to-back years in the District Championships for Williamsport. The other thrills in my career have been this interview because it is my first ever. Being able to perform in front of all the college coaches and Axcess Baseball at the Blue Chip Prospects Showcase has also been pretty special to me. What are your goals for 2021? I am looking forward to contributing to baseball at Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK HS. I plan on improving in all aspects of my game including infield, outfield, pitching, switch hitting and my speed. Favorite app on your phone? My favorite apps on my phone are Snapchat and Instagram. Favorite musical artists? My favorite musical artists are Lil TJay and Polo G. Dream car? My dream car is a Tesla. Favorite vacation spot? My favorite vacation spot is Argentina.

The post Up Next Powered by The Yard Sports Academy: Sebastian Lippman appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

(This is the third installment of the “Up Next” Series Powered by The Yard Sports Academy. The first featured athlete was Josh Knoth. It hasn’t even been two years since there was a high-end pitcher at Kellenberg HS and they already have another. Sophomore Andrew Koshy transferred into the school from the Mineola school district and he already is generating some buzz. The hard-throwing righty had a dominating summer for Team Francisco Notorious 9. Despite often playing against older competition, his numbers were straight out of a PlayStation. Record: 9-1 ERA: 0.58 Innings: 72.0 Earned Runs: 6 Hits: 32 Strikeouts: 118 WHIP: 0.98 Additionally, he was twice named Most Valuable Pitcher by Perfect Game and won the PG Northeast Elite Championship and Northeast World Series. His fastball sits in the mid 80s, and has topped 86. In a wood bat conference, that usually equals plenty of weak contact. It will be interesting to see how the school handles him, as they are typically reticent to promote sophomores to varsity, but they did make the exception in 2017 with Jason Diaz considering his ability far exceeded that of a junior varsity player. I had the chance to speak with him, and here’s what he had to say… Was baseball always your No. 1 sport? Do you play any other sports? Yes, baseball has always been my No. 1 sport. I also play basketball and played soccer. Who are some people that have had a positive influence on your career? Some people that had a positive influence on my career were my coaches. Coach Joe Francisco who is my current coach along with Charlie DeCaro. Prior to playing with Team Francisco I played with the Mineola Hurricanes and the coaches there Mike Duda, John Ryan, Joe Van Grembergen and Steve Kostulias. Last but not least, my parents have always been very supportive of me. Do you work with any private instructors? At the moment no, but in the past I have worked with Keith Couch. Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball? My favorite players in the MLB are Gerrit Cole and Brett Gardner. I like Gerrit Cole because he is a pitcher who dominates the league and I look up to him. Brett Gardner has been onee of my favorites ever since I was young and before I became a pitcher I played left field and as a little kid I looked up to him. What has been your proudest moment on a baseball field? My proudest moment on a baseball field was when I won my first Most Valuable Pitcher at a Perfect Game tournament which also helped my team secure the championship. Can you talk a little about playing for Team Francisco and why you chose to play for them? Team Francisco is a very competitive and hard working organization. Joe pushes us to a whole different level and helps us reach our best potential. I chose Team Francisco because I knew they were a highly competitive team and I always heard how Joe was a good coach and pushed his players to get better. After two years of playing with them, I have no regrets about my decision. Playing with great teammates help me boost my confidence while I’m pitching because Iknow they always have my back when I’m on the mound. Can you discuss why you chose to attend Kellenberg and if you are enjoying your time there? Leaving Mineola and all my friends was a really hard decision but I chose Kellenberg because I knew they would push me to work harder and give me the discipline that I needed. I have developed a stronger work ethic and am more disciplined, which will help me in my future goals. Yes I am enjoying it. Favorite type of food? Cheeseburgers Favorite type of music and musical artist? My favorite type of music is rap and my favorite artist is Lil Tjay Favorite app on your phone? Snapchat Dream car? Lamborghini Dream vacation? Bora Bora

The post Up Next Powered by The Yard Sports Academy: Andrew Koshy appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

Andrew Koshy (Kellenberg 2023) and Christian Alicea (St. John the Baptist 2024) combine on a strike-em-out, throw-em-out pic.twitter.com/OPBSG7ytF9

— Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 27, 2020

This is the second installment of the “Up Next” Series Powered by the Yard Sports Academy. While everyone will immediately think of Mets RHP Marcus Stroman, there have been quite a few since including Matt Vogel – who was also drafted out of high school in 2013. Knoth is showing the type of potential to join that list. As we learn more about pitching, we can learn even more about a pitcher’s ability to be effective. Spin rate, perceived velocity and spin efficiency are all factors that make a pitcher more difficult to square. Sometimes, it’s more simple than that. When a pitcher is in 10th grade, only 160 lbs and already sitting in the low 80s, that’s a good sign that a spike in velocity is on the menu. I first watched Knoth in a Town of Brookhaven league game in July 2018. He threw a complete game to improve the Raiders to 10-0 on the season. Between innings I called over coach Anthony Frascogna and I asked what grade he was in. Coach told me he just finished 7th grade. I’m pretty sure I just said, “wow he’s gonna be a good one.” Since that time he has gained about 10-12 MPH in velocity (topping at 84.1) with a 2444 spin rate (according to his PBR Profile). He throws three off-speed pitches and generates a lot of swings-and-misses. He plays summer ball for the East Coast Lumberjacks, so he’s been exposed to high-level travel ball as well. He can also handle the bat well, recording exit velocities in the low 90s, so he doesn’t have to stick to just pitching either. I had a chance to speak to him, and here’s what he had to say… Looking back on your performance this year, how would you evaluate it? This summer I played a lot of baseball. I played on the Pat-Med Raiders varsity team for the town and some tournaments, and also for the 2023 Lumberjacks which had some great tournaments including a few Perfect Game. I think I did really well. I gained some velocity in my fastball and hit a few home runs between both teams. Do you work with any private instructors? People always ask me who’s my pitching coach but I never really had one. As for hitting, this summer I have been getting lessons from Ryan Pembroke. How have you enjoyed your time with the East Coast Lumberjacks? Playing for the Pat-Med Raiders has always been a great experience for me, it’s like my home when I play with them, but playing on the Lumberjacks this past summer really challenged me and was great. I’ve made new friends all around and was pushed hard. It made me just want to get better and work harder to compete with some tough competition. Pat-Med has had some big-time players in the past between Marcus Stroman and more recently Matt Vogel. Do you feel you have a chance to be the next one? That’s some big shoes to fill but I am definitely working hard to get there. Both of them played school ball for Coach Frascogna and I’ve been guided by him since I was 9 on his travel teams. Knowing Matt Vogel personally as a friend to my family has definitely showed me the dedication and hard work I need to put in and I’m ready for the challenge. What do you plan on working on this off-season? This off-season I’m really working out and hitting the gym. Eating healthier and trying to build on my velocity. Training is definitely going to be a big part of my off-season. What has been your best moment on a baseball field? I’ve had some really good moments but as far as this summer I would have to say hitting a grand slam at Diamond Nation that put the Lumberjacks ahead for the win. Favorite type of food? My favorite food is pasta. Favorite musical artist? I like all types of music but my favorite artist would be Luke Combs. Favorite app on your phone? My favorite app on my phone is Snapchat. Favorite baseball player? My favorite baseball player is Max Scherzer.

The post Up Next Powered By The Yard Sports Academy: Josh Knoth appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

Josh Knoth (Pat-Med 2023) sitting 80-81 T83 pic.twitter.com/GLYUZPinPB

— Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 25, 2020

Pat-Med has been no stranger to hard-throwing right-handed pitchers in recent years.

While everyone will immediately think of Mets RHP Marcus Stroman, there have been quite a few since including Matt Vogel – who was also drafted out of high school in 2013.
