Stony Brook Sweeps Season-Opening DH From Sacred Heart

Opening Day in the northeast ⚾️ ❄️ pic.twitter.com/3nxtFF8UMl — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 26, 2021 Well, it’s not Port St. Lucie but Joe Nathan Field was the site for Stony Brook’s Opening Day in 2021. The Seawolves were slated to face the University of Michigan this weekend to kick off the season but obviously COVID was having none of that. Matt Senk‘s squad opened up at home in February for the first time in school history. They were able to capture both ends of a DH against Sacred Heart University by the scores of 1-0 and 7-1. Pitching was lights-out in both games, but they put their foot on the gas pedal from the start in the second game. Coach Senk thanked coach Tyler Kavanaugh following the game for having his pitchers prepared to go 80-85 pitche...

Who Would’ve Won a Long Island World Series?

One of the things I would change about the state of baseball in our region is that I would eliminate the New York State tournament in favor of a three-game series between the winner of Class AA and A on Long Island. Why? Because the tournament is hosted in Binghamton and with the exception of the teams that qualify, very few people are able to make the four-hour drive upstate. That is a shame that the players invest all the blood, sweats and tears and then they play in front of a sparse crowd. I think it would’ve been so much more fascinating to see a three-game series between Massapequa and Wantagh to see who the true champions of Long Island are rather than having a large-school and small-school champion. Wantagh was talented enough to play in Class AA the past two years and it wou...

Jimmy Joyce Propels Wantagh to Game One Victory

FINA: Wantagh 6 Division 2 WP: Jimmy Joyce Anthony Fontana: 2-Run HR Trevor Fagan: 2 RBI’s pic.twitter.com/cWeM3Nk9nD — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 23, 2017 Wantagh once again proved they are a “playoff team” as they downed the Division Blue Dragons by a score of 6-2 in game one of the three-game series. From the start of this game, the Warriors seemed to have control of this game. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Trevor Fagan delivered a 2 RBI single, and later scored on a wild pitch. His 2 RBI capitalized a 4-run 1st inning, and gave star pitcher Jimmy Joyce all of the run support he needed. “When you give a pitcher like Jimmy an early cushion like that in the ballgame, it helps him and us play comfortably the rest of the way,” said Fagan...

Mike Narbutt’s RBI Double Gives Bethpage 2-1 Victory Over Wantagh

Bases loaded, two-out, 3-2 count, one-run lead against the reigning New York State Class A Champs from Wantagh. Gianni Sozio was on for the save and was facing Charlie Interrante–one of last year’s playoff heroes. After just missing with a 2-2 breaking ball he induced a ground out to SS to end the game to slam the door on the 2-1 victory for Bethpage. Final: Bethpage 2, Wantagh 1 pic.twitter.com/CkOHhfloh8 — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) April 19, 2017 “I was really nervous to be honest with you,” said Sozio directly following the game. “Legs were shaking–but the only thing on my mind was the win. They’re a great team with great hitters–and of course I had to face the top of the lineup which is never easy to go through. They hav...

Wantagh Will Be Tough to Beat Once Again

Head Coach Keith Sachs guided the Wantagh Warriors to their second New York State Class A championship in his 24-year tenure. They also won the Long Island championship in 2010. He will be returning the reigning Class A Player of the Year in Jimmy Joyce, first-team All-State SS Anthony D’Onofrio, All-State catcher Trevor Fagan and Furman-commit Anthony Fontana. He spoke with Vinny Messana and their championship run and what it will be like to have the targets on their back entering the season.
