(Photo Credit: Bill Landon) An integral part of any successful team is for its members to have an unselfish, team-first attitude. Teams are sometimes successful in the win-loss column just due to pure talent, but that is not typically going to be a yearly occurrence. In fact, when a team wins just because of the pure talent it has, it is often without the excitement and exhortation of a tight unit. The major responsibility of this development is of the Head Coach. There are some teams, of course, that have some players who might be natural leaders, but ultimately the Head Coach is the one to foster that development through out the year. As a HS coach for 38 years, I had the fortune of coaching a ton of tremendous young men. My most successful and enjoyable seasons were the ones where the p...
With runners on first & second and nobody out in the top of the seventh, West Babylon was threatening to tie the game. A force out at third for the first out followed by a rare 1-5-3 double play ended the threat and sealed the Fall Championship for LFSL by the score of 2-1. LFSL, which stands for Left Field Stop Line, is comprised of mainly Mattituck and Southold players. Following the game winning pitcher Nate Demchak stated that many of the players are familiar with each other having grown up together and played on the same team for years. The chemistry was apparent this season and especially in the Championship game as they played as a cohesive unit against a strong West Babylon team with a good starting pitcher, Thomas Piazza. LFSL took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first ...

Leadoff hitter Robbie Melo started the game by drawing a walk. Melo stole second base and advanced to third on an errant throw by the Devils catcher. Melo then scored on a fielder’s choice hit by CJ Pisano. Later, in the top of the fourth inning the Devils threatened to tie the game. Devils pitcher Derek Masano hit a...
The Medford Complex in Brookhaven, NY was the venue of champions on Thursday night. While the Varsity Championship was in full swing, Team Steel Gray hosted the LI Patriots White for the JV Championship. Chris Feigel began the game on the mound for Team Steel Gray and Liam Adipietro started for the LI Patriots White. Both were solid early with a scoreless first inning. Then, disaster struck for Adipietro in the bottom of the second. The strike zone seemed to disappear from sight, as Adipietro issued five walks in the inning that scored three before exiting after an inning and two-thirds. Angelo Veltri came in with the bases loaded and two away and retired Jason Schwarm to put the inning to bed, but it was Team Steel Gray ahead 3-0 after two. That remained the score heading into the home fo...

Despite the high score, the two teams battled all game with Storm leading, 2-1, from the second inning to the sixth. Smithtown was led by their pitcher and catcher duo in this strong showing of timely hitting and high-quality pitching. The pitcher, Ryan Mayr (Smithtown West ’18), would go the distance allowing just two hits over seven innings. After allowing a run off a hit in the bottom half of the first, Mayr dug deep and worked into a groove not allowing any hits until the seventh inn...
Hard-throwing St. John The Baptist ’17 RHP Nick Jack dominated in a complete game shutout in Town of Brookhaven Summer Varsity. He worked through the Nationals lineup only allowing two hits in seven strong innings striking out eight and only walking one. “Being smart when I pitch, knowing what pitches to throw and when to change up my looks and change speeds with different counts.” said Jack, who will be playing at John Jay next spring. His strong performance was rewarded with a win thanks to his heavy-hitting lineup that manufactured runs with smart at-bats. The scoring started for the Blue Devils in the second inning. Their only walk at the plate would come from Jack with the bases loaded to bring in their first run. The walk would come with two outs after Nationals’ LHP Dennis Bly...
Grit Baseball went into this matchup with Elite up one point in the Town of Brookhaven Summer Varsity Gold division standings. The two strong teams went head-to-head calling upon two hard-throwing lefties to make the start. Elite’s LHP, Jaryd Amy of Westhampton Beach, would earn the win in a game that only went six innings due to time limit. Elite would win by a score of, 10-2, after going up, 5-0, in the third. The class of 2018 LHP would prove to be a strikeout machine, striking out 11 batters in his four and two thirds innings of work. He would allow only one earned run walking six and allowing three hits. Amy considers himself a strikeout pitcher, but he is aware of the pitch count issues that come with primarily being a strikeout guy. “It’s definitely a blessing and a curse because I ...
The LI Expos remain in first place of Town of Brookhaven’s summer varsity league after a strong outing from their pitcher, Alex Scheitzer. The tall right hander’s slow delivery gave way to a sneaky quick fastball with great movement, in a game that started late after Huntington forfeited the first game of the double header. Scheitzer, a Sachem North 2017 graduate, was unfazed by the delay and went out and threw six and two thirds strong innings of one-run ball striking out seven Blue Devils. “My teammates helped me stay into it [the game] they helped me stay focused,” said Scheitzer. “I just wanted to go out there, throw strikes, stay calm and do what I’ve done for years.” The Expos would go on to win the second game by a decisive score of, 9-1, after the Blue Devils started with eig...
Grit brought out the bats in a total team victory in a game that was closely contested until Grit unloaded four runs in the fourth. Rocky Point 2018 RHP Anthony Denobrega came away with the win for Grit after throwing three solid innings of two-run ball. He struck out four and walked two allowing three hits, he left the game in the fourth with a, 7-2, lead after walking the first two batters of the inning. SWR 2018 RHP Mark Franco replaced Denobrega and with the help of his defense escaped unharmed in the fourth. Franco also demonstrated quality pitching locating fastballs down. He did, however, run into some trouble in the sixth leaving with the bases loaded after allowing a run. The Grit right-hander found ways to get outs effectively through his two and a thirds innings of work. “I just...
Team Steel presents yet another example of a strong team of young players, who are playing up in age division to improve on their overall game. According to their head coach, former MLB catcher Keith Osik, every player in the nine-man lineup (each team only brought nine players) is graduating in 2020. Brookhaven’s varsity division is the highest one they offer and players can be as old as 18. The young team, however, came out on top off a strong pitching performance from their starter, Thomas Verga. The incoming sophomore at William Floyd went five innings allowing three earned off five hits with five strikeouts and three walks. The young RHP also had a strong day at the plate finishing 1-for-4 with a double, a RBI, a walk and a run; proving to be a well-rounded talent. The nine-on-nine ga...
