William Floyd Looking For Players to Step Up in 2021

On the gridiron, William Floyd sets the standard for football excellence in Suffolk County. So it would be unfair to expect one school to have two elite-level programs. On the diamond, the Colonials success comes in waves as talented graduating classes will ebb & flow depending on the year. 2019 was a particularly strong graduating class as they comprised seven of the eight positions on the field and all three rotation spots. LHP AJ Verga and RHP Anthony Currao were both All-League pitchers and were responsible for a bulk of the team’s wins. Last year, they were attempting to fill those innings by shifting All-County SS Tommy Verga to the mound and transitioning closer Anthony Basich to the rotation. With the cancelation of 2020, they lost Verga, Basich, Johnny Robinson and Chris...

Q & A With Tommy Verga on IG Live

I know right now it’s a crazy time. What are you doing to stay sane? It’s crazy. I’ve just been trying to keep after it. Whenever it’s a nice day outside, I try to find a field to get some BP in – or I have a cage out in my yard. I have a tee in my basement for rainy days and I have a home gym, too. He’s been keeping in contact with us, I’ve been texting him. He just wants us all to stay safe and just stay ready in case there is a season, and hopefully there will be. You’re a two-sport star. It’s safe to say William Floyd is a premier football program in Suffolk County as you won another county championship...

William Floyd Looks to Build On Last Year’s Playoff Appearance

It was a year to be proud of for William Floyd, as they qualified for a postseason berth for the first time in eight years. They finished with a regular season record of 13-7, and won their first-round playoff game against rival Sachem East along the way for a total of 14 wins. Head Coach Keith Kobasiuk, entering his third year as head coach, but 12th with the program, felt his players performed well last year but they face the challenge of replacing a big group of seniors. They had eight seniors last year – seven were starters – and three were starting pitchers. Replacing all those innings could be an obstacle. “We’re going to try to piece it together on the mound,” said Kobasiuk. Replacing All-League southpaw A.J. Verga will be difficult. They also graduated...
