Team Steel wasted no time getting a lead, scoring four runs in the first. With one out, Brayden Alemaghides worked a walk and stole second. Alex Casey followed up with a double, giving Steel their first lead. Casey then advanced to third and then scored on a pair of passed balls. With two guys out, Nikolas Infante reached on an error. James Minutillo made the Owls pay, blasting a home run to left field, giving his team a four run cushion in the first. We’ve spent some time discussing the Catholic League this off-season, specifically the two programs with new Head Coaches; St. Dominic and St. Anthony’s. To me, the latter of which is the favorite to capture the CHSAA title this season. One player that likely won’t factor in this season–but certainly in the near future–is ninth grader Taj Farmer. Born Tajjiddin Farmer, he is coming off one of the types of seasons that turns heads. He batted .430 with 55 hits (27 extra-base hits) and 72 RBI. I had the chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say… Who are some players in Major League Baseball that you try to emulate? Miguel Cabrera is currently my favorite player because of his approach and success at the plate. Also Mike Trout, for his all...

LI Strong wins 7-2. Here’s pitcher Steven Murphy on what was working for him, as well as the accomplishment of winning 40 games as a team this season. pic.twitter.com/CTULDfTX9t — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 11, 2018 To kick off the East Coast Nationals tournament, Long Island Strong defeated Team Steel by a score of 7-2. A strong offensive showing, as well as an excellent performance on the mound by Steven Murphy led to the victory. Murphy started off the game strong, striking out the first batter he faced. Although he then allowed a single, the next two batters were also retired via strikeout. In the bottom half of the first, LI Strong went to work to give their pitcher a lead. Tyler Solomon was on the mound for Team Steel, and he struggled early. A leadoff single and a ...
The Hitter’s Club Hawkeyes overcame a four-run deficit to defeat Team Steel, 9-5, on Thursday night. Evan Christopher started for the Hawkeyes and pitched without any major damage until the top of the 4th inning. Besides an unearned run in the top of third, Christopher had not conceded a run. He got into trouble with the game tied in the top of the 4th, however, has he started to have problems with his command. A bases loaded walk forced in a run and three straights hit followed. Christopher would be replaced, but the damage was done with Team Steel leading 5-1 after 3.5 innings. Hawkeyes head coach Kevin Haverbusch was not happy with his team’s defense, particularly in that inning, but was glad to see some mistakes from Team Steel to get his team back in the game. “We just had to take adv...
Our @DigmiNation player of the game is Chris McLaughlin. He struck out seven as his Hitters Club Hawkeyes defeated Team Steel. pic.twitter.com/N4Z78UcXSQ — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 19, 2018 Hitter’s Club Hawkeye’s 17u team defeated Team Steel 17u 5-0 at Hofstra University on Tuesday thanks to early offense and great pitching from their staff. It did not take long for the Hitter’s Club Hawkeyes to get the scoring started. They came to bat in the bottom of the first and scored three quick runs to jump out to an early lead. Chris Lydon got the offense started with a base hit to start the inning for the Hawkeyes and he came around to score the first run of the game on an infield error. With a man on, Matt LaSala drove in another run with a single to add to the Hawkeyes lead. ...
(Frank is a 14-year MLB veteran. He is a 1992 graduate of Smithtown East HS, where he was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the MLB Draft. He compiled a .291 AVG in over 3,800 at bats. He gives lessons for Steel Sports Academy at Baseball Heaven.) by Frank Catalanotto The truth is that everyone is different, so when it comes to baseball and hitting drills, you need to find out which ones work for you and which ones don’t. The repetition of the drills is so important. Part of getting better is teaching muscle memory–especially for younger kids. Here are some that worked for me. One arm drills might be my favorite because each arm gets strengthened individually. I would get a small, lightweight bat and have someone flip balls to me. With just my front arm, I would take 10-1...
Today we covered the Elite College Recruiting (ECR) Showcase at Baseball Heaven. There was a bevy of high-end players being analyzed and observed by coaches representing some of the best baseball programs in the country. Through out the afternoon, I took notes and videos on some of the players that stood out to me. Below you will find notes about the best of the bunch. The first thing you notice is the compact, clean mechanics from the classic high 3/4 arm slot. He is not the tallest...
The Medford Complex in Brookhaven, NY was the venue of champions on Thursday night. While the Varsity Championship was in full swing, Team Steel Gray hosted the LI Patriots White for the JV Championship. Chris Feigel began the game on the mound for Team Steel Gray and Liam Adipietro started for the LI Patriots White. Both were solid early with a scoreless first inning. Then, disaster struck for Adipietro in the bottom of the second. The strike zone seemed to disappear from sight, as Adipietro issued five walks in the inning that scored three before exiting after an inning and two-thirds. Angelo Veltri came in with the bases loaded and two away and retired Jason Schwarm to put the inning to bed, but it was Team Steel Gray ahead 3-0 after two. That remained the score heading into the home fo...
Bases-clearing double gives Team Steel a 4-1 lead pic.twitter.com/w4IenOUIjE aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) August 10, 2017 After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second the No. 2 seeded Team Steel Prime came right back with a five-run top of the third. The five-run third would be the difference in the ballgame. The biggest blow came by the tallest person on the field. St. Dominics class of 2021, Safwan Shariff, would step into the box and clear the bases, propelling Steel Prime to a 4-1 lead with two outs in the third. The 63 13-year-old smoked a fly ball over the left fielder’s head that allowed him to trot into second with an easy stand up double. It felt great leading my team to victory, said Shariff. It was a big win. He would...
Team Steel presents yet another example of a strong team of young players, who are playing up in age division to improve on their overall game. According to their head coach, former MLB catcher Keith Osik, every player in the nine-man lineup (each team only brought nine players) is graduating in 2020. Brookhaven’s varsity division is the highest one they offer and players can be as old as 18. The young team, however, came out on top off a strong pitching performance from their starter, Thomas Verga. The incoming sophomore at William Floyd went five innings allowing three earned off five hits with five strikeouts and three walks. The young RHP also had a strong day at the plate finishing 1-for-4 with a double, a RBI, a walk and a run; proving to be a well-rounded talent. The nine-on-nine ga...
