Now we’re looking to close out the series tomorrow.”  On a sunny afternoon during spring break, the Braves and Sailors were tallied up against each other with Oceanside now holding an 8-6 record in the loss.  On the road, Syosset got out to a 2-0 lead in the first two innings on a Ryan Steinberg double and a Steven Klein single.  Both teams trade zeros in ...

Syosset Primed to Take Leap in 2024

by Aaron Diaz Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s season preview series. The 2023 season had promise for Syosset Braves as they had a 7-6 record before losing two of their last three. In the Nassau AA playoffs, their season was stopped short by Farmingdale for the second year in a row. Coach Tom Morritt wants to improve in their upcoming 2024 campaign heading into his sixth season. “We didn’t start great,” Morritt explained. “We started 1-6 but then rattled off six in a row to get to 7-6 in league play. We ended up being eliminated in the playoffs by Farmingdale. It was a good season. We had many kids returning and many young kids who became big contributors. But it was good to have our hat in the mix at the end of the season.” For the Br...

Despite Losing Strong Group of Seniors Syosset Ready to Continue Success

by Andy Smith  Syosset entered 2022 with high expectations.  The Braves qualified for the playoffs and finished with the season with an 8-7 league record. After losing in the quarterfinals to Farmingdale, fifth year head coach Tom Morritt learned some valuable lessons.  “We learned that it’s so important to be playing your best when your best is needed. We encountered a recent league opponent in the quarter finals (Farmingdale) and lost in the best of 3 games after winning game 1.” Morritt continued, “We had just played our regular season finale with the ‘Dalers the week before and ran into them in the first round of playoffs. Ultra competitive 2 weeks of high school baseball. A great experience, hard fought but ultimately fell short of the team and program goal.” The Braves are entering 2...

Motivated by Game 3 Loss in Semifinals, Syosset Looks like a Threat for County Title

By Thomas Cregan Jacob Lee hits an RBI single to center and Syosset cuts the lead to 4-3 in the sixth pic.twitter.com/LCDOtwyofg — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 13, 2021 Syosset coach Tom Morritt is looking for another successful year out of his group of talented and experienced players in 2022. Syosset came out hot in the 2021 season with a 10-0 start while competing in one of the toughest conferences on Long Island.  The group was able to rally back together after a covid cancelled season in 2020 and post a 13-7 record making the playoffs.  Coach Moritt said that after their hot start they struggled towards the end of the season and took some losses heading into the playoffs, however, this did not derail the team’s morale heading into the postseason.  They defeated Hicksville...

Dylan Banner’s Two-Run Blast Keeps Plainview JFK Alive For Another Day

Never let the best player beat you. That’s one of the mantras of high school baseball. For 7 innings, Syosset lived by that code. They walked Plainview JFK’s most dangerous hitter, Dylan Banner, in all four at bats. In his fifth at bat, though, they opted to pitch to him and, boy, did he take advantage. The junior smashed a go-ahead, two-run HR easily over 400 feet to left field to give the Hawks a 6-4 lead in the top of the eighth. They would hold on by the skin of their teeth, 6-5, to force a do-or-die Game 3 today at Plainview. There was many twists-and-turns to this game. The stands were packed and emotions were spilling over as this game crossed the three-hour threshold. And there’s no commercial breaks – that’s just how much each team was working the opp...

Syosset Returns One Varsity Player But Plenty of Talent

Syosset was one of the many team on Long Island that were really impacted by the cancellation of the high school season. They had 12 seniors and a number of younger players that were quality players and there was plenty of reason for optimism around the program. “We were really excited last year – it was a really good group,” said Head Coach Tom Morritt who took over the program in 2019. That year’s team lost in the playoffs to the eventual Long Island Champion Massapequa Chiefs. They graduated All-County RHP Cameron Mayer from that team who is now a starting pitcher at Tufts. Of the 12 seniors in 2020, three went on to play college ball including PJ Daniels and David & Peter Saferstein.  In regards to those seniors, “It was really tough to see their seaso...

Syosset Surges In Late Innings, Defeats Farmingdale 4-2

Freshman Jacob Lee is the @BsbLifestyle101 player of the game, as he led the charge in Syosset’s comeback victory. pic.twitter.com/LlBzlMaX9X — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 29, 2019 On Monday afternoon, it was Syosset who got the best of Farmingdale, prevailing to a 4-2 victory in extra innings. Before the game started, it was evident this was going to be a game of inches. The reason for that was because of the stellar pitching match up. Syosset called upon Tufts-commit Cameron Mayer to take the mound, while Farmingdale started ace Justin Rosner. Farmingdale got to Mayer first in the second inning, as Robbie Manetta delivered an RBI single to put them on the board. Mayer struggled a little in the early innings, but settled in as the game went on. In the bottom of the 3rd, Kev...

North Shore Pitching Dominant In 6-1 Victory Over Syosset

Dan Livoti talks about what he did to keep the Syosset lineup in check and the offensive aggressiveness that gave him run support. pic.twitter.com/jeWl9cFg2D — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 27, 2019 On Wednesday afternoon, North Shore defeated Syosset 6-1 in non-league play to earn their second win of the young season. Dan Livoti got the start for North Shore and was phenomenal. His first start of the season included no earned runs over five innings pitched. After being named All-Conference in 2018, it’s safe to say he picked up where he left off. “I was working my off speed pitches throwing them for strikes and starting off with strikes,” said Livoti. “We came out here aggressive in the first inning and we did our best to win,” he added. After be...

Syosset Confident They Can Compete In An Extremely Tough Conference

After a tough 5-4 loss to Farmingdale in the first round of the playoffs last year, Syosset is heading into 2019 with optimism. For many reasons, they believe they can compete this year. Not only do they posses a strong core of seniors who experienced last year’s playoff defeat, but they bring in a new coaching staff. After spending eight years as an assistant, Tom Morritt will take over as head coach. He brings in Dan Barcavage from the JV team as an assistant. “We’ve had a very strong off season that’s helped us get ready for what is now turning into our pre season,” said Coach Morritt. “The tone this senior class sets is gonna leave a huge impact on the program for years to come,” he added. If Syosset wishes to make another postseason run, they ...
