Suffolk CC Looks to Continue Region Championship Streak

By Michael Malaszczyk Suffolk captures the Region XV Championship! pic.twitter.com/rN5C3PwnpV — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 22, 2021 Coach Jason Galbraith of Suffolk Community College is full of optimism ahead of opening day. There’s no reason not to be, as his team played tremendously in 2021. “We’re coming off another Region 8 championship,” said Coach Galbraith, in an interview with Axcess Baseball. “It was our 5th consecutive time winning our region.” The pandemic is what stopped his team from going beyond the regional championship, according to Galbraith. “Unfortunately, due to COVID travel restrictions placed on our team, we were not able to compete for the [NJCAA] World Series,” he said. Coach Galbraith’s confidence comes from the fact that his team will be largely comp...

OTD: Suffolk Defeats Nassau to Win Region XV Championship

Suffolk defeats Nassau by a score of 11-2 to win the regional championship. pic.twitter.com/5hn4idy9wk — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 11, 2019 On a beautiful spring afternoon, the Nassau Community College Lions were taking on the Suffolk County Community College Sharks in the Region XV Championship game. Southpaw Tyler Schmid took the mound for Suffolk, and immediately found himself in some trouble, walking the first two batters he faced. However, after a 6-6-3 double play, and a flyout to center, he was able to escape trouble. Nassau starting pitcher, Patrick Denicola, had a relatively clean frame. After allowing a one out double to Christian Lent, he retired the next two batters to strand Lent at second. All the runs that Suffolk would need were scored in the bottom of the se...

Chandler Giovinco On The Road to Recovery

Typically a Tommy John surgery takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the severity. When it takes three hours, you know there’s a problem. Chandler Giovinco, a 2019 graduate of Newfield HS, was pitching outside for the first time last season in a non-league game against League I playoff-contender Longwood. He was excited and feeling strong as he finished his warmup. Five pitches into the game, that changed. “I felt it and I heard it,” said Giovinco in regards to the injury he sustained. “I thought I just cracked it so I kept throwing. Five pitches later I looked at my coach and said ‘I’m done.” In that moment, he feared the worst. “My baseball career is over – I thought to myself,” he said. “Then I thought maybe I can hit...

Christian McPartland on the mound pic.twitter.com/1ogiE0u2Ag — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 17, 2019 Coming off a 26-7 season which culminated in capturing the Region XV Championship, expectations are sky high once again for Suffolk CC. Second year Head Coach Jason Galbraith is extremely confident in his squad this season having guided them to the Super Regionals in his first year at the helm. “This is probably the best infield in the region,” said Galbraith. “The infield is absolutely amazing. I don’t see anyone having better defense than us,” he added. There are certainly reasons to be excited especially with the presence of Chad Pike, who transferred from Dayton State after winning the League MVP at Southampton HS in 2017. Pike is an excepti...

Clutch Hits Lead Nassau Over Rival Suffolk, 5-1

Final: Nassau 5, Suffolk 1 (8 innings) pic.twitter.com/gHUKEbUL2W — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 22, 2019 After six innings of squandered opportunities, Nassau broke through in a big way in the seventh inning. T.J. Toscano got things started with an infield single and Mike Iacobellis sacrificed him into scoring position. A walk brought up Tucker Hahn, a big slugger who smoked one into the right-center field alley for an RBI double to tie up the game. Starting pitcher, Conor Jacoby, came up next and crushed a HR to break the tie and give Nassau a lead that they would not relinquish. An unusual call took one of the runs off the board, when Suffolk appealed that one of the runners failed to touch home plate and the umpire confirmed that was the case. Nevertheless, the damage was...

Frank Valentino Signs Pro Contract

Frank Valentino (NYIT ’17) has extended his baseball career for at least another season as he signed a pro contract with the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League. The 23-year-old RHP attended West Islip HS and graduated in 2013. Last season, he played with the Vallejo Admirals in the Pacific Association, going 5-8 with 5.05 ERA and striking out 92 in 98 innings in 16 starts. The 6’3″ RHP has a low-to-mid 90s fastball which helped him dominate at Suffolk CC before transferring to NYIT and leading the rotation for two seasons along with fellow RHPs Elias Martinez and Matt Diaz. During his senior year, he suffered from some extremely difficult luck. His seasons defied all logic by going winless at 0-9, despite pitching two complete games and pitching deep into every game....
