What’s On Tap For This Week?

This week will start to actually feel like baseball season for two reasons It’s slated to be above 50 degrees from Tuesday through Friday. Seven local teams will be in action Before this week, it’s only been a handful of teams to even get on the field let alone have more than one game at a time. So this will be fun. We used to do the “What’s On Tap” every Monday back in 2015-’16, but it just got too tedious when there’s 15 teams playing multiple times per week. Also, I replaced it with the Weekly Power Rankings, which I haven’t started up yet. Here’s the local teams that will be action this week. Tuesday: Fordham @ Stony Brook 2pm Felician @ Molloy 3:30pm Wednesday: Sacred Heart @ Fordham 3pm LIU @ Farleigh-Dickinson 1pm Thursday: Felic...

Monday Morning Thoughts

So I usually do Power Rankings each week during the college baseball season, but it’s not really a smart idea to do that (yet) in my opinion until all the teams start up. Even out of the Division-I programs, Fordham and LIU have not played a game yet. Fordham was scheduled to start last week but due to COVID cases in the school, athletics paused for 2 weeks. They are now scheduled to open up this Friday against NJIT at 12. LIU is scheduled to open up a week from Wednesday against Farleigh-Dickinson, a game I will be monitoring considering FDU has three LI natives (Tommy Verga , Mike Veit and TJ Werner). This weekend, we will get our first taste of a Division-II program (Molloy) and Division-III (St. Joseph’s). The frustrating part for me is that since most teams are only playin...

Stony Brook Sweeps Season-Opening DH From Sacred Heart

Opening Day in the northeast ⚾️ ❄️ pic.twitter.com/3nxtFF8UMl — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 26, 2021 Well, it’s not Port St. Lucie but Joe Nathan Field was the site for Stony Brook’s Opening Day in 2021. The Seawolves were slated to face the University of Michigan this weekend to kick off the season but obviously COVID was having none of that. Matt Senk‘s squad opened up at home in February for the first time in school history. They were able to capture both ends of a DH against Sacred Heart University by the scores of 1-0 and 7-1. Pitching was lights-out in both games, but they put their foot on the gas pedal from the start in the second game. Coach Senk thanked coach Tyler Kavanaugh following the game for having his pitchers prepared to go 80-85 pitche...

Who Is JT Raab?

Raab topping at 88 MPH today pic.twitter.com/PVdE6H91mx — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 18, 2020 When you are pitching on the same staff as other established arms like Rafe Schlesinger, Tommy Ventimiglia, Dylan Johnson and Jacob Steinmetz, it can be hard to garner all the attention. But 6’5 RHP J.T. Raab (MacArthur 2021) has certainly turned heads with his performance this summer and fall for the Long Island Titans-Quattrini. The No. 1 ranked 2021 team in the region had an outstanding summer, and finished off with a bang at the Northeast Elite Tournament. For the year, Raab posted an unblemished record of 9-0 with a 0.49 ERA. As if that’s not impressive enough, his peripheral numbers were even more astounding. He struck out 12.7 batters per 9, allowed 2.6 hits pe...

Fall Ball Series Powered by East Coast S & P: Stony Brook University

They compiled a 3.66 ERA – including holding the high-powered Clemson lineup to just six runs over three games – before the season was cut short due to COVID-19. That series in particular against Clemson was enough reason for optimism regarding the team. Northeast teams have no business competing with the ACC teams in February and the Seawolves lost the middle game 1-0 in 10 innings. In that game, Sam Turcotte struck out seven over six...

Jason Campo Commits to Stony Brook

Jason Campo is a power hitting first baseman from St. John the Baptist. The 2022 grad attended our Ducks Stadium Showcase back in August of 2019. Yesterday he announced his commitment to attend Stony Brook University. St. John the Baptist, who captured the CHSAA title in 2018, is building quite a program under Head Coach Casey McKay. Don’t be surprised if they are playing on Championship Monday next year. I spoke with Jason about his experience with the college recruiting process and a myriad of other topics, and here’s what he had to say… Can you explain your experience with the college recruitment process and why you chose Stony Brook? My college recruitment process went very smoothly. Every couple of weeks I would touch base with Jim Martin, the assistant coach for Sto...

Photo Credit: Stony Brook Athletics by Kenneth Fermin All eyes were on Gerrit Cole Friday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y. The pitcher who signed with the New York Yankees for $324 million this offseason took the mound for the final time before the 2020 Opening Day. While Cole impressed fans striking out the side opening the contest, the opposing pitcher matched the ace throwing zero’s on the scoreboard. West Islip High School (’08) and Stony Brook (’11) alum Nick Tropeano battled Cole on the pitching mound in the Yankees intrasquad game on July 17th. Tropeano, representing the ‘Bombers,’ gave up two singles and struck out three batters in...

(Photo Credit: Associated Press) Kevin Courtney is a former standout first baseman for Stony Brook University that was a sophomore during their historic run to the College World Series in 2012 in which they upset perennial powerhouse LSU on ESPN. Prior to that, he was a member of St. John the Baptist under former head coach John Habyan. He went 10-0 on the mound as a sophomore and was 6-1 with a 1.14 ERA and a .515 AVG as a senior in 2010. He went on IG Live to discuss his career, specifically the 2012 season. He now lives out in Los Angeles.     Here are some of the highlights from the hour long conversation. -The team was disappointed in how their 2011 season considering they had future MLB RHP Nick Tropeano atop their rotation and future pro third baseman Steve Marino, who was...

On This Day In Axcess History: Stony Brook Shuts Out Hartford in a Commanding Win

(Editor’s Note: This article was originally posted on March 25, 2017 by Tyler Marko.) In the final game of a three-game series with Hartford University, Stony Brook struck a decisive victory in their first conference series of the season with a 14-0 win. After splitting a doubleheader with the Hawks the day before SBU stood on their home turf and made a statement in with a dominant win. Seawolf starter Brian Herrmann earned his second win of the season with a spectacular performance. Herrmann hurled seven shut-out innings, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out five and improving his already stellar ERA. After the game head coach Matt Senk praised the freshman starter saying, “He’s been terrific and he was terrific again today… The way he performed today is how h...

Offense Comes To Life in Stony Brook’s 9-4 Victory Over Iona

Evan Giordano on the 9-4 victory for Stony Brook over Iona pic.twitter.com/PbtsDkscKo — Axcess Elite (@axcess_elite) March 11, 2020 With one badly-needed offensive spurt, the Stony Brook Seawolves were able come away with a 9-4 victory over the Iona Gaels. Trailing 4-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Seawolves posted a six-spot sparked by a two-run shot by freshman Brett Paulsen and a two-run single to right field by freshman Derek Yalon to tie it up. Johnny Decker followed with an RBI infield single and a bases loaded walk to Brad Hipsley gave them an insurance run. They added to that lead on a solo shot by Evan Giordano, the team’s leading hitter, in the sixth inning. The victory was important for the Seawolves, who were sputtering offensively with a team batting average of ...

Freshman Stanton Leuthner Pushes Stony Brook to Home Opener Win

by Kenneth Fermin Final: Stony Brook 3, CCSU 2 WP: Jared Milch S: Brandon Bonanno pic.twitter.com/doQh60ucBM — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 6, 2020 Stony Brook Baseball couldn’t have been given a better opportunity to score than in the bottom of the sixth inning. Central Connecticut State Blue Devils first baseman TT Bowens dropped an infield flyball in foul territory that would have helped the Blue Devils get out of the jam, with runners in scoring position. However, The Seawolves’ comeback attempt was looking bleak as freshman Stanton Leuthner trailed 0-2 in the count against senior pitcher Andrew Braun, with two outs. Leuthner swung on the next pitch over the top of the plate and lunged out of the batter’s box. “I was looking. I had no idea if it was dropping,” Leuthner sa...

Week 2 College Power Rankings

(Photo Credit: Rob Edwards/KLC Fotos) There’s a couple ways to look at this past weekend for the locals but I’m a glass-half-full person so let’s keep it positive. Let’s get to it: Division-I: 1.St. John’s (Record: 3-3. Trending UP) 2. Stony Brook (Record: 1-6, Trending Neutral) 3. Hofstra (Record: 1-6, Trending Down) 4. Fordham (Record: 1-6, Trending Down) 5. LIU (Record: 1-3, Trending Neutral) Breaking it down: St. John’s won two of three from Cal, no small task for a northeast team to travel cross-country and win a series on the West Coast in February. That was definitely the most positive storyline from this past weekend for the Division-I schools. Also, Stony Brook traveled to ACC Country and lost three games by a total of five runs. While there are...
