Nick Grande makes a nice play moving away from home plate. Stony Brook leads 3-0 after 1 inning pic.twitter.com/CE6OpChqg2 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 13, 2019 Stony Brook bounced back from Tuesday’s defeat by Iona with a smooth 9-3 victory over LIU Brooklyn. The offense got out to a quick start in the first inning with a three-spot. RBI singles by Brandon Alamo, Chris Hamilton and a sac fly by Evan Giordano gave them so cushion, and they never looked back. Bret Clarke made his first outing of the year and he was sharp; going two shutout innings and striking out two batters. He was named our 2016 Rookie of the Year. If he can rediscover that form, it will be a huge boost for the Sea Wolves. He topped out at 91 MPH in his outing. He was relieved by hard-throwing fresh...
It was the opening week for Division-I baseball teams. While it is always reason for excitement, the results are often underwhelming for Long Island teams considering the disadvantage of playing against southern teams that have been outside since January 1. It’s important to keep that in mind, because more often than not, a rough start to the season is not indicative of anything else. For Week 1 of our Power Rankings, we will limit it to the Division-I programs because the only Division-II school to play this weekend was LIU Post who played the 7-time Division-II National Champions. Without further ado, here she goes… Stony Brook (Record: 2-1, Trending UP) All things considered, it was about as good of an Opening Weekend for Stony Brook as they could’ve hoped for. To go d...
Similar to Friday’s results, baseball on Long Island is not off to a hot start. Out of the five colleges that played down south yesterday, we saw two teams come out on top as winners and three teams lose in blowout fashion. Here is how everything shaped out on Saturday. Following a rough 9-1 loss in their season opener, Hofstra showed some life in the late innings as they defeated Incarnate Word 3-2 in game one of their double header on Saturday, but fell the next game 9-1. In game one, Hofstra was trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the 6th. This would all change on a three-run home run by Rob Weissheier. After the home run, Andrew Mundy solidified the game as he recorded the three-inning save, allowing only one earned run and three hits. Brad Camara was the winning pitcher in this...
Ah the sweet, sweet, smell of baseball. After a long eight months away from live action, college baseball is back on Long Island. Friday night, five colleges opened up their seasons against teams on the other side of the country. The only winning team from last night’s games was Stony Brook, who defeated FIU by a score of 13-7. The offensive explosion was in part from seven different players who chipped in with RBI. 3B Michael Russell propelled the Stony Brook offense, going 3-5 at the plate with an RBI. Four different players in the Stony Brook lineup had a four-hit performance, including Dylan Resk, Michael Wilson, Brandon Alamo and John Tuccillo. Greg Marino picked up the win for Stony Brook, pitching five innings allowing only three hits, two earned runs and struck out five. Adam...
This is a list of the best draft-eligible college players we’ve seen on the island. The limitations are that a) we have not seen every player and b) we have not seen every player multiple times. Nevertheless, this is based on our best resources and unbiased opinions. He has appeared more as a DH/1B as opposed to a catcher, which makes it more challenging for him, but Hofstra says he will be a catcher for the bulk of the time. Al...
2019 could have certainly gotten off to a better start for some people. Such as me. I immediately got pneumonia after I got back from the Power Showcase in Miami, which has left me relegated to laying on the couch. Fortunately, that does not preclude me from blogging so the show goes on. This is one of my favorite pieces to write each year, because of the difficulty. You are dealing with 18 and 19 year olds and often times high school success does not translate well to college. I will give it my best guess based on what I saw in the fall during our Fall Ball Series Presented by The Greene Turtle and also the recommendations of people smarter than me. Here it goes… Ben Fero, RHP, Stony Brook Freshman Ben Fero flashing some heat pic.twitter.com/FUIl6GkpMK — Axcess Baseball LI (@...
Yesterday, we went over the major points of interest among the high school baseball season and now we will discuss the college community. The season approaches much quicker, in fact, only 43 days until the Division-I seasons kicks off. Below are some thoughts I have as it pertains to the upcoming season… How will Hofstra replace John Rooney? Rooney is the type of arm that doesn’t come around often to a mid-major like Hofstra. He came from upstate NY and in three years turned into one of the most dynamic pitchers in the country and was drafted by the Los Angleles Dodgers. It’s pretty interesting because had Kyle Young opted to go to school instead of signing with Philadelphia, he would’ve been in line to step right in the ace role for the Pride, but obviously that...
Following an outstanding 2018 season, Stony Brook SS Nick Grande will add one more piece of hardware to his collection. The Smithtown West grad will receive Axcess Baseball’s Most Valuable Player Award. During his sophomore season, he posted an incredible season slashing .377/.468/.560 with 59 runs scored, six HR, 28 RBI and 32 stolen bases. He also played stout defensively. For his feats, he was named All-American. Coming out of high school, he was ranked by us as the No. 6 prospect on Long Island, but has certainly continuously improved and is now considered a draft prospect this season. He comes from a baseball family, as his father was the Head Coach of Island Trees HS for 14 seasons and played collegiately at Farmingdale State College. He cited Derek Jeter as his favorite player...
Today was Stony Brook Scout Day at Joe Nathan Field. 10 years ago, there would’ve been very little reason for scouts from outside the Long Island territory to hike down to a small school that plays in the America East. Today, there was a dozen scouts watching and taking notes on all the draft-eligible players that the Sea Wolves have. Last year was pretty indicative of the program they’ve become in the sense that they did not win their conference yet had two players drafted. They also sent Daniel Zamora to the big leagues. He came in during the 2013 class that featured a huge roster turnover following their trip to the College World Series. I remember sitting in the Adelphi library when I first started “Baseball on the Island”, thinking to myself “who are thes...
Nick Grande (Smithtown West 2016) takes a two-strike pitch and drives it for a single. He was named All-American in 2018 after compiling a .377/.468/.560 slash line with 32 stolen bases pic.twitter.com/nLyTqy8WDz — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 24, 2018 It’s been six years since their improbable run to the College World Series, but the “Omaha Effect” still has a positive impact on the Stony Brook baseball program. When you look around the field, you see talented players that may have previously opted to attend powerhouse programs in other parts of the nation had the Sea Wolves not boosted their value with that incredible 2012 season. Their run of sending players to the professional ranks continued in 2018 when 3B Bobby Honeyman and closer Aaron Pinto were s...

It’s been an outstanding 2018 season for Stony Brook sophomore SS Nick Grande (Smithtown West 2016). He was a key cog in the Sea Wolves’ 32-win season which ended just short of winning the American East Championship. He capped that season with being named First-Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, an accomplishment not often achieved by shortstops from the northeast. His season, though, speaks for itself. He hit the ground running from Day 1 at finished the campaign with a triple slash line of .377/.468/.560 with six HR and 32 stolen bases. He drew 28 walks and was also hit by 10 pitches. He committed only seven errors at shortstop in 226 chances for a fielding percentage of .970. With this historic season, he now puts himself in the conversation for the 2019 MLB Draft. He...
