The college baseball season is in full swing and we had an exciting upset down in Baton Rouge that had baseball fans feeling like it was 2012 all over again! Here’s how it went down: Division-I Stony Brook 5 – LSU 2 The Stony Brook Seawolves went on the road and shocked the No. 2 ranked Louisiana State University Tigers 5-2. After the two teams scored two runs each in the second inning, the Tigers were held scoreless for the remainder of the game, while the Seawolves offense scored one run in the fourth, and two in the eighth to give Stony Brook an improbable victory over LSU, handing the Tigers there first loss of the year. The Seawolves offense was anchored by junior Robert Taylor. Taylor went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Cam Santerre and Matt Miceli had the other two RBI’s. Eddi...

(Editor’s Note: This is the eighth installment of “Where Are They Now” Powered by the BK7 Brand. You can check out the previous seven by clicking here. In this edition, we catch up with Greg Marino, a former standout pitcher at Centereach HS and Stony Brook University.) Standing 6’6 and throwing in the low 90s, Greg Marino was an intimidating presence on the mound for Stony Brook University. The hard-throwing RHP pitched three seasons for Matt Senk including starting an NCAA Regional game in 2019 against LSU. Following his collegiate career, Marino followed in his brother’s footsteps and played in the Frontier League with the Southern Illinois Miners for the 2019 season. But just like that, he decided his professional baseball career was done at the age of 22. Could he have continued? Sure...

Here’s how it went down… Division-I: St. John’s 7, Tulane 3 E8 | 7-3 SJU Make it 12 Ks for Red Storm pitching tonight! @nickcirelli pic.twitter.com/zNSKCr0dCW — St. John’s Baseball (@StJohnsBaseball) February 26, 2023 The Johnnies won their second straight over Tulane led by 13 strikeout by the pitching staff. Friday College Recap (2/17) Powered by Orlin & Cohen

by Andy Smith It’s the start of a new season ! And with the mild winter, it seems like it flew right by onto baseball season. The Division-Is opened up last night and Molloy will open up today. Without further ado, here’s how it went down… Division-I: St. John’s was the lone local team to get a W as they came out of the gate hot with an impressive 7-6 win in extra innings at Old Dominion. Paul Orbon‘s game-winning RBI single was the difference, as the Johnnies were able to erase a 4-run deficit. David Glancy picked up right where he left off last year, crushing a HR. Chuck Sanzio pitched two innings and earned the winning relief. Sony Fauci started and went four innings, allowing 4 runs (2 ER) and did not factor in the decision. He walked five and struck out 2...

Fall Ball Series Powered by Baseball Lifestyle: Stony Brook

DOGPILE SZN: COMMENCE 💪 🌊🐺 x @evangiordano12 pic.twitter.com/XZ21Ry4wgb — Stony Brook Baseball (@StonyBrookBASE) May 21, 2022 You can’t blame them for feeling like there’s some unfinished business. The seniors for the Stony Brook Seawolves have dealt with circumstances beyond their control for each of their previous three seasons of collegiate ball – COVID in 2020, the infamous “rainout” in the championship in 2021 and then the America East ruling that Stony Brook was ineligible to compete for the conference tournament in 2022. Each situation was different but frustrating in their own way. Last year seemed like the most avoidable, as the commissioner simply could’ve allowed the Seawolves to participate in the tournament, but ruled against it since they w...

Stony Brook Leaves America East, Accepts Invitation to Join CAA

In a surprising move, Stony Brook announced it has accepted an invitation to join the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) as a full-time member beginning July 1, 2022. They had previously been a member of the America East Conference since 2001. The move will be effective July 1, 2022. All 18 Stony Brook athletic programs will be in the conference, marking the first time that has occurred in the school’s Division-I era. The move was first reported by Kevin Maher of News 12 last night and confirmed by the school today. Athletes had only recently found out about the move last week. The school’s Athletic Director, Shawn Heilbron, had the following statement: “I’m very excited to announce that Stony Brook University will join the Colonial Athletic Association. This invit...

Fall Ball Series Powered by East Coast S & P: Stony Brook University

Stony Brook HC Matt Senk is entering his 32nd season at the helm. Had a chance to speak with him after practice pic.twitter.com/xW2A2t8aV3 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 25, 2021 It’s been about five months since the now-infamous ending to the 2021 season for Stony Brook in the America East Championship against NJIT. Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning with the bases loaded and threatening to score more, it began raining. The game was called and it was expected they would complete it the following day, Sunday at 10am. Stony Brook entered the game with a record of 2-1 in the tournament and NJIT was 2-0 so Stony Brook would have to hold on to win and win again. But with the lead and home-field advantage it certainly wasn’t out of the realm of possibilit...

Cleveland Indians Select Tommy Ventimiglia in the 18th Round

Tommy Ventimiglia (Longwood 2021) records a strikeout on a high fastball during workout in San Diego pic.twitter.com/5EDThlb3iZ — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 6, 2021 Longwood RHP Tommy Ventimiglia was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 18th round of the MLB Draft. He was the first Longwood player to get drafted since Bryan Hansen in 2001. Ventimiglia, a 6’4 RHP, dominated League I as a sophomore in 2019 (0.28 ERA) and committed to Stony Brook following the season. His star has risen since and was considered one the top pitchers on Long Island entering 2020. After the cancellation of the season, he was able to put together a huge summer pitching for LI Titans-Quattrini – part of a vaunted staff with JT Raab and Jacob Steinmetz. The highlight of his season was...

NJIT Receives Automatic Qualifier – Wait, What?

So the big story today is the debacle in the America East as the conference elected to not resume yesterday’s suspended game “due to inclement weather”. At the time of the rain delay, Stony Brook was leading NJIT 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning with the bases loaded and threatening to score more. NJIT and the umpires determined it was best to pause play. The plan was to resume the game at 10am on Sunday morning. Given the circumstances of NJIT being 2-0 and Stony Brook being 2-1, Stony Brook would have to hold on to win and then win another game in order to capture the championship. They decided that “due to inclement weather” the game would not be resumed and NJIT would receive the automatic qualifying bid because they were 2-0 at the time of the suspen...

Busy Day of Local Colleges in Action

While it might not be as fruitful as the 2019 season in which several teams were competing for conference championships and NYIT reached the Division-II World Series and LIU Post fell just short, we still were treated to a great – albeit shortened – 2021 collegiate season. Here we are on Memorial Day Weekend and we have two Division-I teams, one Division-II and one Division-III team still alive. Here’s what’s on tap: Division-I: –Stony Brook will host the America East tournament beginning this afternoon. The No. 1 Seawolves will host Maine beginning at 11am. The teams did not face each other this season, but Stony Brook has a 51-31 record against them all-time. Expect Sam Turcotte to get the start for the Seawolves. He has a 2.53 ERA on the season. Stony Brook...

Saturday College Recap – Molloy & Suffolk Capture Titles – Powered by Orlin & Cohen

Division-I: St. John’s defeated Villanova, 6-1, to conclude their season on a high note. They finish with a record of 19-21 – a very uncharacteristic under .500 season for the Johnnies. In fact it’s their first sub-.500 season since 2013 and the previous one before that was over 60 years ago. In the victory, they used a six-run second inning as the engine for the win. Justin Folz opened up the scoring with a solo HR and Carson Bartels drove in two with a single to center. Marty Higgins led the offense with three hits. Tyler Roche pitched six strong innings, allowing just one run (0 ER) and striking out eight. Joe Joe Rodriguez and Ethan Routzahn slammed the door on the victory. It will feel strange seeing a Big East tournament played without the Johnnies – they̵...
