Steven Matz entered the building to a huge crowd at his alma mater, Ward Melville High School, to attend his pitching clinic. There was four stations, each filled with dozens of young players hoping to pick up some wisdom from Long Island’s brightest stars–many of which were donning Matz’ No. 32 uniform. The local stars were all in attendance to assist Matz in the clinic. Some players in attendance were A.J. Nunziato (2007 Carl Yastrzemski Award winner), Joe Flynn (2015 League I MVP), Anthony Kay (2013 Paul Gibson Award winner and current member of Team USA), among many others. Also in attendance was Philadelphia Phillies scout Tom Downey, New York Mets scout Larry Izzo, Dr. Luga Podesta of St Charles Orthopedics (former team physician, Anaheim Angels and LA Dodgers), St...

The most coveted award for Suffolk County high school baseball players is the Carl Yastrzemski Award. Here is a ranking of the past 10 award winning seasons. 10. Jesse Berardi, 2014 Key Stats: .423 AVG, 13 extra base hits, 25 runs scored This has nothing to do with the lack of production, but the sheer talent of this list. Berardi was a standout player during his ...
If you thought you had golden treatment after getting back to school following a big win in high school, imagine returning home after being apart of the first New York Mets pennant in 15 years. Steven Matz, who was one out shy of recording the victory in the NLCS Game 4 win over the Chicago Cubs, has been the toast of Long Island for the past month. I had the chance to sit down with his father, Ron Matz, today and he was certainly proud of his son’s accomplishments this year. “It’s been crazy because it happened so quick,” he said. “He was in the minor leagues to start the year and got called up in late June and it’s been a whirlwind ever since. It’s been really exciting,” he added. Matz made his big league debut on June 28 against the Cincin...
In front of a raucous home crowd and many of his friends and family, Steven Matz had the opportunity to pitch his New York Mets to the NLCS for the first time since 2006. Unfortunately, the man opposing him was the reigning NL MVP and three-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw. The Mets were defeated 3-1, with Matz suffering his first big league loss–although it will not count towards the official stats due to it being the postseason. Matz hadn’t pitched in a game since September 23 against the Cincinnati Reds but he was sharp early. He struck out leadoff batter Enrique Hernandez on a nasty 81 MPH curveball. He induced a weak fly ball off the bat of Howie Kendrick before coaxing a weak grounder from Adrian Gonzalez. His fastball was touching 96 MPH with movement and his change ...
By now, everyone and their mother knows that two of the prominent players in the MLB postseason–Steven Matz of the New York Mets and Marcus Stroman of the Toronto Blue Jays–hail from small towns on Long Island. Stroman, whose miraculous return from ACL surgery was widely documented by the national media, won all four of his starts in September (all against the gauntlet of the AL East) and will be getting the Game 2 start against Cole Hamels on Friday in Toronto. He struck out 18 over 27 innings, allowing five ER (1.67 ERA) and made each of those starts count. He beat the Yankees in his season debut on September 12, beat Boston in his next outing, outdueled Ivan Nova in Toronto his next time and then threw eight shutout frames in the AL East division clinching victory on Septemb...
Long Island has always been underrated in terms of producing quality baseball players. In the past few years, however, the elite-level talent pool has been especially fruitful. In 2015 alone, Long Island residents Marcus Stroman, Steven Matz, Sean Nolin, Danny Burawa and Nick Tropeano have all logged significant time in the big leagues. Add in Stony Brook product Travis Jankowski and that is a significant amount of local talent. Last week, Stroman pitched in the biggest game of his young career (six months removed from ACL surgery) and fired seven shutout innings, improving his record to 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA. He will be back on the hill tomorrow in Baltimore against the Baltimore Orioles. On the same day, Tropeano threw 4.1 shutout innings against the Houston Astros in a hostile environment...
One aspect of Steven Matz‘ game that is evident is his ability to mitigate any of the outside distractions and simply focus on pitching. He will need to possess a great deal of that focus tomorrow night in the Subway Series against Masahiro Tanaka and the New York Yankees. Matz will be pitching in front of his hometown fans in his fifth big league start. He will enter the game with an unblemished mark of 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA over his first 24.0 IP. He has struck out 22 while compiling a 1.08 WHIP. The Yankees will be a tough match up for Matz–they have compiled a .783 OPS against left handed starting pitchers this season over 41 games. They have hit 59 home runs over that span. Overall, the Yankees have the third highest OPS in MLB and compiled the third most HRs. The Ward Mevil...
