Who were some influential people in your life growing up? A lot of people influence me. Mom and dad always helped me with no matter what I needed to do – getting to the gym, getting to lessons, getting to practice games every day. They were always there for me. My grandfather was at every practice, every game, everything that I ever had. If my parents couldn’t bring me somewhere, he would bring me there. They were a big influence on me, and I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing now if it wasn’t for their support. Back when Coach [Andrew Aschettino] took over, [Rocky Point] was a lacrosse town. When you were in high school, did it become more of a baseball town at that point? Yeah, while Aschettino was the coach of Rocky Point, he had a pretty good resume. I can’t remember how many years ...

Plattsburgh State junior pitcher Patrick Bryant, with the help of some outstanding defense, held the strong Tomcats lineup to two runs. Bryant went seven and two-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs off eight hits; he struck out three and walked none in the Road Warrior’s 4-2 victory. Hofstra senior Steven Foster stepped up for the Road Warriors in the bottom of the fourth knocking an RBI double off the fence to bring in sophomore Garrett Heaton after he led off the inning with a single. “Coach told me to be aggressive on first pitch, because I was taking a lot of first pitches,” said Foster. “I was aggressive and just got a good piece of wood on it today.” Freshman outfielder for Farleigh Dickinson, Mike Veit, drove in foster with a clutch seeing eye ground ball single to right ...
The Pride began their weekend at the Mardi Gras Invitational with a 10-3 win against Nicholls State. Hofstra tallied 18 hits to Nicholls’ three. Thanks in part to a masterful performance from starting pitcher John Rooney, he threw five no-hit innings in which he struck out six. When he left he had put his team in great position to win–as Hofstra was up 7-0. Hofstra wasted no time, first baseman Nick Bottari got them on the board with a two-run double in the game’s third at bat. They continued to pad their lead until the seventh inning, when Hofstra delivered a knock-out blow in the form of a three-run home run from shortstop Mikey Riesner. Nicholls came back to score three unearned runs in the eighth, but by that point it was all but over. Riesner led the team in RBIs wit...

Photo Credit: Vinny Messana The book is closed on Hofstra’s 2015 season. They finished by losing two of three to James Madison University. The bright spot of today’s 23-7 loss was Brian MacDonald‘s three hits and Steven Foster‘s 2-for-2 performance with two RBI and two runs scored.Unfortunately, the pitching staff was not effective–allowing 15 hits and 10 ER. Thirteen of the runs were unearned due to an error by the second baseman in the third inning that opened the flood gates. On the season, the offense was certainly solid. They batted .274 with a .355 OBP. Foster led the way with a .351 average, .452 OBP, 35 runs scored and 19 stolen bases. Fellow freshman Mat Anunziata smacked five home runs and drove in 28 runs. They will look to improve on a pitching staf...
Photo Credit: LIU Post Athletics The people have spoken! After a whopping 2.548 votes, LIU‘s first baseman David Groeneveld has been voted MVP of April. Last month, Dan Parisi of Dowling had the award bestowed upon him after receiving a majority of the 748 votes. This season, Groeneveld is batting .305 with a .407 OBP and .421 SLG percentage. He has nine extra-base hits. In April, however, he has taken his game to another level. He entered the month with a .219 average after their March 30 game against St. Thomas Aquinas. Since then, he has amassed 22 hits in 17 games and scored seven runs to become one of the most consistent forces in the Pioneers’ lineup. “I thought it was really good,” he said in regards to his April performance. “I made a few adjustments t...
Photo Credit: Hofstra Athletics It has not been a banner year for Hofstra to this point. But, when they get the offense going they are scary. They won 13-7 today on 14 hits against NJIT to improve to 14-22 on the season. The offense was led by the trio of Steven Foster, Brian MacDonald and Chris Weiss. Foster had a stat line that would make Jesus proud–he went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. He hit his first home run and a double. MacDonald went 3-for-5 with four RBI and Weiss went 3-for-4, including a home run, with two RBI and two runs scored.Starter Chris Bonk went four innings, allowing four ER and was credited with his third win of the season. He was relieved by Luke Noone, who went two innings allowing one ER. Ryan Kieran came in, allowed two runs, and was remov...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana We provided coverage of three games yesterday, but here is the results from the rest of the college programs on the island. Division-I: Hofstra shutout Manhattan 7-0, behind Adam Seibert and four relievers. Seibert started and went five innings, Adam Heidenfelder threw the sixth inning. Kevin Weissheier and his brother, Matt, both pitched one inning and Chris Weiss closed it out. Together, they allowed four hits and three walks while striking out 10. The offense got going early on Brad Witkowski’s RBI triple to drive in Steven Foster. In the third inning, Dalton Rouleau hit a sac fly to score Witkowski to make it 2-0. David Leiderman stayed red-hot, and increased it to 4-0 with a two-run single. In the seventh inning, Eric Ferguson scored on a wild pitch f...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana In another low-scoring game for the Pride, David Leiderman provided the go-ahead two RBI single in the top of the 13th to give his team a 3-1 lead that would stand up.Freshman starter Adam Heidenfelder (MacArthur ’14) threw six shutout innings against Villanova, allowing two hits, five walks while striking out two.He did not factor in the decision due to the Pride not being able to muster anything on offense. Opposing starter Ryan Doty was very difficult and held the Pride off the board until the eighth inning. In the top of the eighth, Brad Witkowski (3-for-6, 1 RBI) tripled down the right field line to score Steven Foster and give the Pride a 1-0 lead.Converted starter Nick Kozlowski set down the side 1-2-3 in the eighth but ran into trouble in the ninth...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana As we mentioned in the scouting reports, Bowie Matteson is dominant when he spots his fastball. That was the case on Saturday in his first career start, when he went seven dominant innings, allowed six hits, struck out five and walked none. Chris Weiss came in for the save with a clean ninth inning. It was an old fashioned pitcher’s duel against Villanova’s Hunter Schryver. He went eight innings, struck out eight and allowed only one run while getting tagged with the tough-luck loss. The Pride’s lone run came in the third inning when freshman Steven Foster singled home Ryan Donovan to give the Pride the early lead. Sure enough, that run was enough.Foster, a 2014 graduate of Sachem North HS, is making his case to be named Baseball on the Island...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana When a player hits a go-ahead grand slam and it’s not even the most impressive feat of the game, you know you have a wild game on your hands. Hofstra won a 12-7 thriller over Delaware, in which Eric Ferguson went 5-for-5 and hit for the cycle. The Pride were actually trailing 4-1 in the fourth inning after Tyler Powell hit an RBI double off Chris Bonk. Things looked bleak as the Pride was staring at the prospect of being swept by a conference opponent.Everything turned around in the fifth inning when Dalton Rouleau cut the lead to 4-2 with RBI double. Steven Foster sliced the lead to one with a run scoring single. Delaware extended the lead to 5-3 when Joe Giacchino hit a solo home run to right field. The Pride changed the complexion of the game in the six...
