Q & A With Frankie Moscatiello

Who were some influential people in your life growing up? A lot of people influence me. Mom and dad always helped me with no matter what I needed to do – getting to the gym, getting to lessons, getting to practice games every day. They were always there for me. My grandfather was at every practice, every game, everything that I ever had. If my parents couldn’t bring me somewhere, he would bring me there. They were a big influence on me, and I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing now if it wasn’t for their support. Back when Coach [Andrew Aschettino] took over, [Rocky Point] was a lacrosse town. When you were in high school, did it become more of a baseball town at that point? Yeah, while Aschettino was the coach of Rocky Point, he had a pretty good resume. I can’t remember how many years ...

Frank Moscatiello Motivated For a Huge Year

When it comes to being a 5’8 RHP from Long Island, it goes without saying that there are some inherent obstacles during the climb to professional baseball. Rocky Point 2014 graduate Frank Moscatiello heard all the doubters and skeptics along the way. At each level, he overcame the cynics and continued to perform well. After compiling a 20-7 record with a 2.52 ERA over 232.1 IP at St. Thomas Aquinas, he built up a strong case to get drafted in the 2018 MLB Draft. Although he was not drafted, he wound up signing a pro contract with the Rockland Boulders – who happen to share a stadium with St. Thomas Aquinas. In his first pro season, all he did was compile a 2.79 ERA across 61.1 IP, striking out more than a batter per inning. He also won four games for the Boulders. Following a s...

Q & A With Vin Malzahn – Assistant Coach of the Irish National Team

Vinnie Malzahn is the assistant coach of the Irish National Team – which one Gold Medal in Zurich in 2017 during the European Championship. He is also the GM of the Hardball Training Center in Elmsford, NY. Prior to that, he had a standout career at St. Thomas Aquinas, where he was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2016. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say..   Who are some players you tried emulating when you were younger? Ken Griffey Jr and Derek Jeter. Loved watching those guys for different reasons…Jr because I was a lefty and tried to make my swing as smooth and effortless as his and Jeter because of how much he respected the game and how hard he played every single time he stepped on the field. Do you come from an athletic family? My...

Josh Loeschorn Fires 4-Hit Shutout to Keep LIU Post Rolling

Here’s Josh Loeschorn talking about his dominant complete game performance. pic.twitter.com/HORccuTwie — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 1, 2019 LIU Post has been on fire offensively lately. Coming into this game they were on a seven-game win streak, where they scored an almost unthinkable 121 runs. While the offense has certainly carried the team as of late, starting pitcher, Josh Loeschorn, wanted to remind everyone that the pitching isn’t lacking either, as he went to 4-0 on the season after today’s complete game performance. The win gave LIU Post a four-game sweep over St. Thomas Aquinas. Loeschorn was dominant all game. He carried a no-hit bid into the 5th inning. That same inning, he allowed his only run, but only after a balk brought the runner in from third. That was the...

St. Thomas Aquinas Holds Off Late Rally to Advance to ECC Championship

Michael Manzione crushed a 2-out grand slam to cut the deficit to 8-6 in the ninth pic.twitter.com/ilbUbfYFUU — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 11, 2018 What was a sure victory with two outs, nobody on base in the ninth inning and a six-run lead turned into an absolute nail biter. Chris Cepeda stated he was “praying” it would get caught. “Thank God Gio {Giovanni Dingcong} was there,” said Cepeda, who recorded the victory. The Ward Melville product went six innings, allowed two ER, walked one and struck out five for his seventh victory of the season. Angelo Baez allowed a two-out grand slam to Michael Manzione, followed by a single to Anthony Vaglica after a 6-4-3 DP put them one-out away from the ECC Championship with an 8-2 lead. Zach Fritz got into one to...

Commack-Native Steven Morse Committed to Turning SUNY Ulster Around

(Photo Credit: SUNY Ulster) One of the aspects of baseball that makes it great is that it’s the ultimate form of meritocracy. It doesn’t matter where you were born, who your parents are or where you’ve been. That’s why there are players from all over the globe in the MLB and front offices are filled with individuals from their late 20s to mid 80s. The one common denominator is that those who are in positions of power, are the ones that were the most resilient and refused to let rejection deter them. Commack-grad Steven Morse is one of those grinders, and that’s a huge reason he was offered the Head Coaching job of SUNY Ulster at the age of 25. He was tasked with turning around a program and there is every reason to believe he is on the right path. He spoke wit...

Catching Up With Will O’Brien

One of the forgotten story lines of Wantagh‘s championship run in 2016 was that they were able to withstand the loss of their two-time All-State RHP Will O’Brien, who suffered an arm injury. Although Jimmy Joyce and Bobby Hegarty did just fine in his absence, the Warriors had a pitcher that had compiled other-worldly numbers over the course of a two-year stretch. 2015: 5-1 record, 0.71 ERA, 66 K (5th team All-State) 2016: 7-0 record, 1.21 ERA, 88 K (1st team All-State) He is currently at St. Thomas Aquinas. He spoke with Vinny Messana and here’s what he had to say… Describe the 2016 run by Wantagh. How difficult was it being sidelined with injury but also how proud of your teammates were you to pick up the slack? I think what made the 2016 playoff run so special was...

Who Is Jack Gonzalez?

Sachem North made a surprise playoff run in a difficult League 2 this season thanks to a strong pitching staff led by Chris Lollo, Kevin Kochen and Jack Gonzalez. Lollo is at Washington College, Kochen is at Queens College and Gonzalez announced yesterday that he has committed to St. Thomas Aquinas. They are coming off an appearance in the Div-II College World Series, where they won the first two games before falling just short of the ultimate goal. Gonzalez is a crafty left-handed pitcher that works in the 78-79 MPH range, but has tremendous command of his pitches. He had a very good summer with Motus Academy, where he was named to the All-Tournament team of the WWBA in Georgia. He will be leading the Arrows’ rotation in 2018 as they look to build on this year’s 11-win season....

Frankie Moscatiello Dominates, Dingcong Goes Deep Again in St. Thomas Aquinas’ Win

St. Thomas Aquinas HC Scott Muscat on their victory over Molloy pic.twitter.com/WKNXZni7xv — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 11, 2017 Fresh off being named ECC Pitcher of the Year, Frankie Moscatiello (Rocky Point ’14) fired 7.1 innings of one-run ball, allowing St. Thomas Aquinas to top Molloy 6-1 in the first round of the ECC Championship. “He pretty much kept the game in control,” said Head Coach Scott Muscat. “He struggled a little bit with the control but he only gave up a run–he did a fantastic job,” he added. When Giovanni Dingcong steps to the plate, the fielder’s might as well vacate the infield and all stand along the warning track. The powerful outfielder launched one of his patented majestic home runs (15th of season) to give...
