Anthony Papa Records Three Inning Save in First Appearance Since 2015

In his first appearance in a game since 2015, Anthony Papa recorded the three inning save in 4-1 victory pic.twitter.com/8z4m2uRJIM — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 4, 2018 To say it’s been a long road back would be an understatement. Anthony Papa, who led Division to the Long Island Championship in 2015, made his first appearance after nearly three years and recorded a three-inning save in St. Joseph’s 4-1 victory on Opening Day against Ithaca after losing Game 1 of the double header. “It felt weird being out there again,” he said following the game. “Three years in the making, it feels good to finally get back out there. I was a little cold, it’s not the ideal first start, but we got through it, got the big win today and it was good fo...

St. Joseph’s Motivated By Last Season’s Bitter Ending

2017 was not supposed to end that way. Entering the season as the reigning Skyline Conference champs and led by a veteran pitching staff with two Axcess Baseball All-Long Island pitchers in Josh Outsen and Brandon Lubrano as well as two experienced arms in Nick Clemente and P.J. Martino, the Golden Eagles were understandably confident entering the season. After breezing through much of the season, including a double header sweep of the eventual champs from SUNY Maritime, they suffered an unexpected hiccup in not one, but two postseason games on their home turf. They were shellacked 21-8 by Maritime and eliminated by Mount St. Mary’s by the score of 8-5, before having to watch the Privateers celebrate on their mound. “I send that picture of them celebrating in our group chat alm...

What Are the Major Story Lines to Watch for in 2018? (College)

Yesterday we went over the top story lines for the 2018 high school season, you can read that here. Now we will shift over to the colleges in our coverage area. How good can Adelphi’s pitching staff be? It might not happen this year, but this group of young pitchers has the potential to blossom into something special. The year prior to me getting to Adelphi, they compiled a team ERA of 1.97–good for second in the nation. They came within one inning of qualifying for the College World Series. That pitching staff had four players–Robert Nixon, Jonathon Gonzalez, Mike Scudero and Dillon McNamara that wound up playing professional baseball. McNamara is now with the San Francisco Giants. After watching their Scout Day back in October, I came away very impressed. Their group of...

Anthony Papa Transfers to St. Joseph’s

(Photo Credit: James Escher) When St. Joseph’s graduated two All-Long Island pitchers, Brandon Lubrano and Josh Outsen, following the 2017 season, it was a major question mark as to how they would replace two rock-solid veterans anchoring the rotation. It took almost until the New Year, but they seem to have answered that question with the addition of two-time All-State pitcher Anthony Papa, who transferred from Coastal Carolina (originally attended LIU Post in fall 2015). Papa was regarded as one of the best pitchers on Long Island during his stellar career at Division HS that culminated in firing a six-hit shutout against Bayport-Blue Point in the 2015 Class A Long Island Championship at NYIT. Papa will join forces with Joseph Murphy, a transfer from Suffolk CC (Sachem East 2015) i...

Fall Ball Series: St. Joseph’s College

Here is Joseph Murphy showing off his knuckleball. He was All-American at Suffolk CC last season and will be a key cog in their rotation pic.twitter.com/0Gt9PajxNu — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) September 23, 2017 We continue our Fall Ball Series with St. Joseph’s. I was down at Gregg Alfano Field watching their intrasquad game today. Coming off a 25-win season, the Golden Eagles are once again a formidable player in the Skyline Conference entering 2018. Despite having their championship hopes dashed by Mount St. Mary’s last season, the Golden Eagles have the most complete roster in the conference. They will be led by a potent lineup featuring Lou Doria, Paul Britt, Daniel Campanelli, Dylan Piscitelli, Matthew Burnett, Tyler Crafa, Anthony Raucci and Tyler S...

Maritime Mauls St. Joseph’s 21-8, Advances to Skyline Conference Championship

SUNY Maritime wasted no time in their Skyline Conference Tournament match up against St. Joseph’s this morning. The Privateers jumped on St. Joe’s pitching from the start and never relinquished the lead. The first run of the game came across on a double down the left field line by Steve Semler, who won yesterday’s fifteen inning marathon with a walk-off sacrifice fly. Thirteen Maritime batters came to the plate in the first, and besides Semler runs were driven in by Brian McLaughlin, Phill Russo, Connor Alwan, Aaron Schiavoni, Antonio Diaz and Matt Costleigh. With an opening frame like that it felt like St. Joe’s was done for before they even had a chance to bat. Head coach Charlie Barbieri said after the game: “We were trying to maybe shoot for two or three r...

Insider Notes: April 9

Through out the season, Exclusive aXcess members will be able to read our Insider Notes section based on observations from a scout’s perspective. Today I was in attendance for the Maritime vs St. Joseph’s showdown at Gregg Alfano Field in Patchogue. It was a crucial match up for two reasons If Maritime won both, they were in the driver’s seat in the Skyline Conference If St. Joseph’s won both, they were in the driver’s seat in the Skyline Conference. As it ends up, the two teams played at completely different speeds and the Golden Eagles won both games by the score of 7-0 while getting complete games from both Brandon Lubrano and Josh Outsen. I was a bit surprised that Maritime was so flat offensively. In Game 1, they only mounted a couple of rallies but the m...
