Final: St. Joseph’s 11, Lehman 1 Anthony Raucci discusses the victory and his 3 RBI day pic.twitter.com/0xkNKAjZdm — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 12, 2019 St. Joseph’s was the last of the Long Island colleges to kick off their 2019 season, but it was worth the wait. They begin their season with an 11-1 victory over Lehman. They compiled 13 hits and benefited from shoddy defense, as Lehman committed six defensive miscues. Ryan Foran got the start. The reigning Paul Gibson Award winner was sharp in his collegiate debut, throwing two shutout innings, allowing just one hit. Their ace, Anthony Papa, also pitched two innings, touching 89 MPH on a few occasions. Other pitchers that threw an inning were Nick Mannarino, Kevin Yohe, Tim Woodford, Anthony Caminiti and Justin...

Tom Caputo New Assistant Coach at St. Joseph’s College

In a pretty surprising move, St. Joseph’s Head Coach Rick Garrett announced that former Dowling Head Coach Tom Caputo will be his new assistant coach, replacing Paul Parsolano. Caputo is widely considered to be one of the best hitting coaches on Long Island and was able to galvanize a Dowling roster that began the season 3-11 and led them to winning the ECC Championship in 2016. They also were on the verge of a Division-II World Series appearance in 2014. When he was the guest on the Axcess Baseball Podcast, I came away with the impression that while he missed the success he had at Dowling and the impact he had on the lives of young men, that he was content with where he was at in life. Things change of course, and he is now back in the college game. This is bad news for opposing man...

Freshman That Could Have An Immediate Impact

2019 could have certainly gotten off to a better start for some people. Such as me. I immediately got pneumonia after I got back from the Power Showcase in Miami, which has left me relegated to laying on the couch. Fortunately, that does not preclude me from blogging so the show goes on. This is one of my favorite pieces to write each year, because of the difficulty. You are dealing with 18 and 19 year olds and often times high school success does not translate well to college. I will give it my best guess based on what I saw in the fall during our Fall Ball Series Presented by The Greene Turtle and also the recommendations of people smarter than me. Here it goes…   Ben Fero, RHP, Stony Brook Freshman Ben Fero flashing some heat pic.twitter.com/FUIl6GkpMK — Axcess Baseball LI (@...

Paul Parsolano Named St. Anthony’s Head Coach

In a move that is likely to reverberate throughout Long Island baseball, Paul Parsolano will be the new Head Coach of St. Anthony’s, where he was previously an assistant from 1995-2007. In fact, the last time St. Anthony’s won the CHSAA title was in 2000, when he was on staff. He is also credited with the rapid ascension of Franklin Parra from obscurity to being drafted by the New York Mets in the 11th round this past June. Parsolano had been the pitching coach of St. Joseph’s College since 2014, where he helped break their drought of winning the Skyline Conference championship in 2016. They also won it in 2018, in large part to his pitching staff. Here are some facts since he took over. 2 Conference Championships (2016, 2018) 2 Regular Season Championships (2015, 2017) 6...

Fall Ball Series Presented by The Greene Turtle: St. Joseph’s

When Anthony Caminiti struck out the final batter to seal the 2018 Skyline Conference championship for St. Joseph’s on May 7 it confirmed they were the top team in the conference. Not only that, it also clinched their second title in three years, entering the conversation of the top Division-III programs in the region. With that being the case, a new precedent has been set when you put on the uniform and step on Gregg Alfano Field. “The expectation now is to win a championship,” said Head Coach Rick Garrett, who just completed his fifth season with a winning percentage of .582. “Every day, every game, we play to win. The expectation is that if we don’t win, it’s a failure. Every kid took last year (2017) as a failure. I’ve never seen a team put in ...

Steven Rizzo & Vito Friscia Capture the 2018 Axcess Home Run Derby

On a hot & humid August afternoon, two players stole the show and stood above the rest in their respective brackets. Steven Rizzo (St. Anthony’s) captured the high school division and Vito Friscia (Hofstra) captured the college division in front of a packed crowd at Baseball Heaven. Rizzo led all high school hitters with 10 home runs, including seven in the first round. He defeated Matt Brown-Eiring (Connetquot 2020) in the championship round with two home runs. David Falco (Center Moriches 2019) smacked 3 HR, Brock Murtha (Saville 2020) hit two while Kyle Rausch (Longwood 2019) and Brown-Eiring each hit one. The college age players put on a clinic. St. Joseph 1B Paul Britt hit four home runs. He is a finalist for our Axcess Most Valuable Player for his amazing 2018 season for th...

Charles Rainone: Life Under The Radar

Being a high school athlete is a journey. A developmental phase that can only be compared to riding a roller coaster with all the ups-and-downs that emerge in the process. It is rather rare for an athlete to enter high school and make the varsity team his or her freshman year. Often times it takes determination, hard work and a willingness to put in more time and effort than everybody else to get to where you want to be. Being a high school athlete is a journey that hinges on skill development and dedication. This is the journey of Charles Rainone. Charles entered high school at Deer Park with the thought in the back of his head of how he wanted to make the varsity baseball team his freshman year. He soon would find out that for most high school athletes that tends to stay a want rather th...

St. Joseph’s Outlasts USMMA in 11-Inning Thriller to Capture Skyline Conference Title

And the St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles are the 2018 Skyline Conference Champions! pic.twitter.com/XsYIblRhGb — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 6, 2018 Like the legendary Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra said, “it’s deja vu all over again!” Just as they did in 2016, the St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles captured the Skyline Conference championship in an 11-inning extra inning thriller at Farmingdale State College. The big hit came by pinch-hitter Gehrig Montoro to score Tyler Crafa on a well-struck line drive down the left field line to send his team and the St. Joseph’s faithful into a frenzy. “I said to him right before he got up ‘this is what makes the season, this one hit’ and he went up there and got it!” said fifth year Head Coa...

St. Joseph’s Upsets No. 1 Farmingdale to Advance to Skyline Conference Championship Game

After all, he was second in the nation in lowest ERA at 1.21. In order words, he was brought in to pitch a game like today. With both teams having won their first game of the tournament, it was a crucial game to build momentum and enter championship Sunday in position to only have to win once. Murphy was everything they couldR...

Anthony Papa Fires 134-Pitch CG, Golden Eagles Cruise to 10th Straight Win

Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is Anthony Papa who fired a 134-pitch complete game in St. Joseph’s 8-3 victory over Mount St. Mary’s to advance to the winner’s bracket in the Skyline Conference tournament pic.twitter.com/kAAXw1JJz8 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 4, 2018 Some pitchers get that look in their eye when they get close to the finish line. St. Joseph’s Head Coach Rick Garrett knows Anthony Papa fits that mold. He fired a 134-pitch complete game with his last pitch registering as the same velocity as the first pitch (85 MPH). Asked what gave him the confidence to stick with Papa despite the elevated pitch count and Garrett did not hesitate. “He’s one of those Levittown kids,” said the fifth year skipper referring to h...

16 Shutout Innings lead Farmingdale to Sweep of St. Joe’s

David Otero on what worked for him this afternoon pic.twitter.com/xyhZQmipo9 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 15, 2018 Farmingdale State slid into second place in the Skyline conference on Sunday afternoon, completely dominating St Joseph’s (L.I) in 16 shutout innings at home. The Rams took the first game, 6-0, and won a 7-inning second game, 2-0, on a windy day that head coach Keith Osik said was “not baseball weather obviously.” Senior LHP David Otero Jr. took the mound for Farmingdale in game one and looked sharp, throwing 7.1 strong innings, striking out 10 and allowing only three hits. “My changeup was my go-to pitch,” Otero said. “I was just trying to get ahead and get my breaking ball and changeup over.” With the victory, Otero mov...
