Power Rankings: Week 1

It was the opening week for Division-I baseball teams. While it is always reason for excitement, the results are often underwhelming for Long Island teams considering the disadvantage of playing against southern teams that have been outside since January 1. It’s important to keep that in mind, because more often than not, a rough start to the season is not indicative of anything else. For Week 1 of our Power Rankings, we will limit it to the Division-I programs because the only Division-II school to play this weekend was LIU Post who played the 7-time Division-II National Champions. Without further ado, here she goes… Stony Brook (Record: 2-1, Trending UP) All things considered, it was about as good of an Opening Weekend for Stony Brook as they could’ve hoped for. To go d...

College Opening Day (2/15) Recap Presented by The Schwarz Institute

Ah the sweet, sweet, smell of baseball. After a long eight months away from live action, college baseball is back on Long Island. Friday night, five colleges opened up their seasons against teams on the other side of the country. The only winning team from last night’s games was Stony Brook, who defeated FIU by a score of 13-7. The offensive explosion was in part from seven different players who chipped in with RBI. 3B Michael Russell propelled the Stony Brook offense, going 3-5 at the plate with an RBI. Four different players in the Stony Brook lineup had a four-hit performance, including Dylan Resk, Michael Wilson, Brandon Alamo and John Tuccillo. Greg Marino picked up the win for Stony Brook, pitching five innings allowing only three hits, two earned runs and struck out five. Adam...

What Are The Major Storylines For 2019? (College Edition)

Yesterday, we went over the major points of interest among the high school baseball season and now we will discuss the college community. The season approaches much quicker, in fact, only 43 days until the Division-I seasons kicks off. Below are some thoughts I have as it pertains to the upcoming season… How will Hofstra replace John Rooney? Rooney is the type of arm that doesn’t come around often to a mid-major like Hofstra. He came from upstate NY and in three years turned into one of the most dynamic pitchers in the country and was drafted by the Los Angleles Dodgers. It’s pretty interesting because had Kyle Young opted to go to school instead of signing with Philadelphia, he would’ve been in line to step right in the ace role for the Pride, but obviously that...

April 28 Recap

A lot of quality baseball played on the island Saturday, including a historic offensive performance at the Division-I level. Take a look at who continued to make a postseason push. Division-I: Hofstra: Hofstra defeated William & Mary, 7-3, to extend their winning streak to six in a row. Rob Weissheier delivered a grand slam in the first inning to help open up a 4-0 lead. Steven Foster joined the homerun party with a shot of his own in the seventh inning, a two-run shot, to extend the Pride’s lead. Matt Weissheier was solid in his six innings, giving up one run and striking out five. The win makes Hofstra 9-8 on the year against CAA rivals. St. John’s: St Johns pounded out 31 hits on their way to defeat Xavier 34-7. The bats were scorching hot as the Red Storm knocked home at leas...

April 20 Recap

College baseball winds down its final weeks with these teams still going strong. Take a look at who excelled: Division-I: Hofstra: Hofstra defeated Charleston, 7-1, to help stop a six-game losing streak. John Rooney’s brilliant campaign continued Friday, going nine innings, giving up just five hits and one run in line for his sixth victory of the season against zero losses. His ERA drops to 0.97 for the season. Hofstra was able to grab their first runs of the game in the sixth behind a Mikey Riesner RBI sac bunt. That was followed up by an Austin Gauthier two-run single to give Hofstra the lead 3-1. They proceeded to tack on four more in the eighth, good enough to put them at 14-15 on the season and 4-8 in conference play. Fordham: Fordham was defeated, 5-3, in eleven innings against Georg...

April 13th Recap

12 Teams went to work on a beautiful Friday the 13th. Take a look at those who stepped up: Division-I: Hofstra: Hofstra was defeated by Elon 2-1. John Rooney continued his amazing junior season by going seven innings, giving up zero runs and five hits. Hofstra tallied only two hits on the afternoon. A Garrett Stonehouse two-run double in the eighth proved to be the deciding factor in the loss. Hofstra drops to 14-12 on the season and 4-6 in conference play. Stony Brook: Stony Brook fell to Albany, 5-4. Albany jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning but the Sea Wolves fought back in the third, scoring three runs in the inning, one of them courtesy of a Michael Wilson single. Albany would gain the lead back in the following inning, and later padded on another run in the fifth and ...

Alex Katz Reflects On His Playing Career

(Photo by Brian Westerholt/Four Seam Images) What could be a bigger thrill for a six-years-old than getting to stand on the field of a Major League Baseball stadium and getting to meet your favorite players? What could be a bigger thrill for a baseball player than getting to participate in the World Baseball Classic in front a sold-out crowd in Japan? New Hyde Park-native and Herricks HS grad Alex Katz was fortunate to experience both things. The former was the virtue of luck by winning a contest at a shoe store that he was entered in. The latter was the virtue of many years of hard work, success and persistence. The hard-throwing southpaw grew up a die-hard Met fan in New Hyde Park and he remembers going to games at Shea Stadium hoping to grab the attention of his idols, Billy Wagner and ...

Power Rankings Week 6

I just got back from Wilmington, NC where I got a great look at Hofstra. They entered the series against CAA-rival UNC-Wilmington red-hot and I wanted to get a close look. It was great baseball–if you haven’t had the chance to take a weekend trip to the south and experience Division-I baseball I highly recommend you do so. The only downside was that I apparently missed out on an epic double header between St. Joseph’s and Maritime this afternoon in Throggs Neck, NY. It was a match up that could determine home field advantage in the Skyline Conference playoffs and St. Joseph’s made the statement that their not done yet and came back from a 9-2 deficit in the second inning. Sidenote: with the high school season opening this week, we will transition to more high school...

March 24 Recap

A busy day for teams on the island with 10 teams taking the field. There were seven double headers as well. Teams went 13-5. See who shined: Division-I St. Johns: St. John’s defeated Binghamton 4-0. Starter Sean Mooney went 5.1 scoreless innings for his fifth win of the season. The Red Storm took a 1-0 lead early courtesy of a John Valente groundout. They continued to cruise behind strong pitching until the ninth, where they scored three runs to extend their lead. St. Johns moves to 10-7 on the season. Stony Brook: Stony Brook swept the double header against Quinnipiac, winning 10-4 and 5-1. In game one, the Sea Wolves jumped out to an early start, scoring four in the first and two in the second. Chris Hamilton launched a first inning grand slam to put Stony Brook up early. The blast...

St. John’s Drop Rubber Match Against UConn

In the rubber match of a three-game set, the UConn Huskies take the victory over the St. John’s Red Storm, 3-1, at Jack Kaiser Stadium. This concludes the first series between the two schools since the realignment of the modern Big East Conference. St. John’s has lost five of their last six games losing back-to-back series at Kansas and against UConn. Although two days away from the first day of spring, temperatures stayed in the 30s today in Queens, NY as they have all weekend. It had the makings of a pitcher’s duel in the first half of this game as both starting pitchers allowed a combined 5 hits after four scoreless innings. St. John’s struck first with a RBI single in the fifth by senior Rob Boselli III scoring graduate student Luke Stampfl from second. That pro...

Oceanside Season Preview

Typically when a team starts four sophomores in any given year, it’s rebuilding year. Especially when there’s only three seniors, as Oceanside had in 2017. That was not the case, as shown by their 17-5-1 record. What was the secret? Those four sophomores all stepped up to the challenge and performed exceptionally well. First baseman Chris Siklas (.353 AVG), OF Leo Alvarez (.365 AVG), 3B Austin Vlahakis (.321 AVG) and 2B Jake Lazzaro (.305 AVG) were all major contributors as opposed to inexperienced sophomores. Lazzaro, also an All-County WR on the football team, played so well he received an athletic scholarship from St. John’s on the basis of his incredible series against Massapequa. Head Coach Mike Postillo called him “lightning fast” and he will slide over ...
