Up Next Powered by Ken Kortright State Farm: Dylan Weinstein

(This is the first installment of the popular “Up Next” series. We will highlight the top underclassmen on Long Island every Monday during the offseason. Special thanks to Ken Kortright State Farm for sponsoring this year’s series.) Dylan Weinstein (‘28, NY) cranks this loud bomb to LCF, plating three. That was when they last captured the Catholic League Championship, during that golden era of the CHSAA when every team seemingly had 5...

GAME RECAP: Victor Frederick Fires 6 Shutout Innings, St. Dominic Cruises to 9-3 Win

End of 1: Joe Galeotafiore rips a 2-out, 2-run double to left center St. Dominic 3, St. Anthony’s 0 pic.twitter.com/2Baqv8pfub — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 9, 2024 While St. Dominic has a young team, it doesn’t necessarily mean 2024 is a rebuilding year for them. Head Coach Joe Fusco said “these are not your typical freshman and sophomore type players, they are some of the best players in their class at that age.” They have backed up that talk and the Bayhawks defeated a tough St. Anthony’s team, 9-3, behind their ace, Victor Frederick. The St. John’s-commit went six shutout innings, allowing just three hits, issuing two walks and striking out six. He retired the first 10 batters to face him before sophomore CJ Alfano lined a single to get the ...

St. Dominic Looks to Take Next Step in 2024

By Max Edelman Final: St. Dominic 10, Chaminade 1 WP: Victor Frederick Frederick also hit a 3-R HR pic.twitter.com/uHl1vHvaD6 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 18, 2023 Last season was yet another step in the right direction for the St Dominic Bayhawks. After a season in which the Bayhawks finished with a 17-8 record and made a playoff run in coach Joe Fusco’s second year as head coach, Fusco and the Bayhawks have high hopes for the upcoming 2024 season.  “We made a major jump last season.” Fusco said. “We won 17 games, we ended up tying for second place and ended up a game out of first. Unfortunately, in the playoffs we did win a playoff game, but then lost two one-run games. But overall, I think the year was a resounding success for what we were looking for.”  Despite winning ...

GAME RECAP: John Carroll, James D’Alessandro Combine to Fire Playoff No-Hitter for Chaminade

A playoff no-hitter ! At the high school level, some are only five innings in run-rule games. Some include a bevy of walks, hit batters and errors that don’t resemble anything like a no-hitter. This one certainly didn’t feature any of that. It’s not often there’s a playoff no-hitter – especially in the Catholic League – which features the best collection of talent on Long Island. Chaminade, the 3-time reigning champs that have somehow been overlooked in 2023, reminded ev...

GAME RECAP: Victor Frederick Dominates on the Mound, Crushes 3-R HR in St. Dom’s Victory

Final: St. Dominic 10, Chaminade 1 WP: Victor Frederick Frederick also hit a 3-R HR pic.twitter.com/uHl1vHvaD6 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 18, 2023 For a team looking to establish themselves as a championship contender, there is no bigger moment than facing the reigning New York State champs. Chaminade is the three-time reigning Catholic League champs and coming off one of the most dominant seasons in Long Island history. St. Dominic, a team loaded with talent and looking for their first championship since 2009, had this one circled on the calendar for sure. The Bayhawks sent ace and St. John’s-commit Victor Frederick to the mound and he was up to the task. Frederick was extremely effective and efficient as he cruised through a Flyers lineup that features five Divisi...

Led by a Barrage of Flame Throwers, St. Dominic is Hungry for First Title Since 2009

by Nick Cipolla Last year, St. Dominic’s High School showed everyone in the CHSAA they were much improved and they shouldn’t be taken lightly.  First year head coach Joe Fusco led St. Dom’s to 14 wins between league, non-league, and playoff games in 2022. They were a team that got hot down the stretch, winning 8 of their last 10, eliminating teams like St. John the Baptist, Holy Trinity, and St. Mary’s from the playoffs. The only losses they experienced in the 10 game stretch were losses in walk-off fashion, showing that they were in every game they played towards the end of the year. Coach Fusco is a big reason for the instant turnaround in 2022. Fusco shared with Axcess Baseball some of the things that he felt made a difference in 2022.  “Last year for myself and the coaching staff was a...

Up Next Powered by Eye Q Investigations: Lucien Saint Cyr

(This is the tenth installment of our weekly “Up Next Series Powered by Eye Q Investigations” in which we highlight the best underclassmen from across Long Island. Previously, we featured Miguel Sime Jr, Matt Cruz, Luke Coats, Michael Gardner, Tyler Scarry, Kenny Meliere, Jaiden Zoller, Max Donacea and Keegan McElligot. Make sure to check out Eye Q Investigations by clicking here) As I mentioned in the last edition, it is rare for a freshman to be the starting SS on varsity in the CHSAA. The teams are too talented and the talent pool is typically plentiful enough where it is not even a consideration. In the case of St. John the Baptist and St. Dominic, that is not a concern entering 2023. Both teams will likely be starting a freshman. Keegan McElligot for SJB and Lucien Saint Cyr for St Do...

Up Next Powered by Eye Q Investigations: Matt Cruz

Good look here at Matt Cruz (‘24, NY) snatching a few 87s early in outing. 82-85 mph range w/ FB that shows some riding life (2200-2300 RPM), strong feel for SL w/ horz & vert tilt, landing in zone often (2100-2300 RPM). Comes from extended 3/4 slot. #16uMASelect @PG_Uncommitted pic.twitter.com/f4cMZgEwmr — PG Mid Atlantic (NY, NJ, PA, MD) (@PGMidAtlantic) July 17, 2022 Typically players that get called up to varsity as a sophomore in the Catholic League struggle to find their footing at first. After all, it is the most competitive league on the island and the bulk of the players tend to be seniors. That age difference can make all the difference in many cases. Most players are not like Matt Cruz, though, he came up to varsity as a sophomore and all he did was lead the CHSAA in AVG (.5...

Preseason Coaches Roundtable

Under First Year Coach Joe Fusco, St. Dominic is Poised to Put Plenty of Runs on the Board

By Michael Malaszczyk Coach Joe Fusco of St. Dominic’s High School is ready to take the team to new heights this year. St. Dominic’s bounced back in 2021, the first season since baseball was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, to have a strong season in the highly competitive Catholic League. St. Dominic’s finished fourth overall in the league, losing to Kellenberg in the semifinals. While this is Coach Fusco’s first year with St. Dominic’s, Fusco is no stranger to baseball and brings a ton of experience; Fusco previously worked as an assistant coach at Clarke High School under the tutelage of Tom Abruscato.  “We made 2 county championship appearances and won a county championship,” Fusco said of his time at Clarke. Fusco also works as a coach for Team Francisco Hitting Academy. “We are...

Joe Fusco Named Head Coach of St. Dominic

There’s been a change at the helm for St. Dominic once again. Joe Fusco has been named the  Head Coach of the Bayhawks ball club, replacing Matt Prokopowicz  – who was hired in late 2019 and recently stepped down. Their Head Coach in 2019 was Brian Anderson and the year before was Jimmy Goelz. Fusco had been the assistant coach at Clarke HS for the past three season where he helped Tom Abruscato lead the Rams to a County Championship in 2019 and a County Final in 2021. He also coaches Team Francisco Select 16u. He stated the team has compiled a record of 78-24 over the past two seasons and ranked No. 60 by Perfect Game. As a player, in 2018 he was named to Axcess All-Long Island and hit .339 at New York Tech. At Clarke HS, he was 2-time All-State, 2-time All-Long Island, 2-time...

St. Dominic Rides Two Five-Run Innings To Power Past St. Anthony’s, 11-6

That was not the case today, as St. Dominic RHP Logan Gersbeck was efficient and kept the St. Anthony’s offense at bay for most of the game and his offense backed him with a five-run third inning as the Bayhawks advanced with an 11-6 victory and they will face Kellenberg next Monday.
