Paul Parsolano was named head coach of St. Anthony’s high school in December 2018, which meant there would be a short window of time to familiarize himself with an entire group of players, new surroundings and a new league. He found a way to get the Friars into the CHSAA Finals against Chaminade, where they were tied 1-1 heading into the eighth inning while facing MLB Draft pick Logan Koester. An unearned run on a bunt wound up resulting in the go-ahead runs to score and they were defeated, 3-1. Despite the loss, the feeling was that the Friars had exceed expectations in the first year of a new regime. “From the beginning, we spoke about ‘changing the culture’ of the baseball team,” said Parsolano. “We wanted to make them relevant again – when you ...
In a move that has been in the makings for over two decades, Brooklyn/Queens schools will be added to the Nassau-Suffolk Catholic League–effective spring 2020. This is big news, as it adds more parity to a league that was already very balanced. Rather than three-game series, there will be two-game series for the Long Island schools and one-game against the Brooklyn/Queens schools. This will not include the playoffs–the existing format will remain, but their hope is to build towards an intersectional or state tournament like public schools do. Below is the letter that was sent out by Ralph Dalton, President of NSCHSAA. Since the inception of the current format, here are the championships by school: Chaminade – 16 St. John the Baptist – 12 Holy Trinity – 6 Kelle...
Boston College-commit Cameron Leary has found a new home. The St. Anthony’s outfielder that was entering his senior year has transferred to P27 Academy in Lexington, South Carolina, according to his father. Classes began today, which means the switch is official. If you have never heard of the academy, you are not alone. There is very minimal information available online about the academy, but here’s what it says on their website. “Located in the heart of South Carolina, P27 Performance Center is the premiere student-athletics development program, targeted at students from across the country. The goal of of P27 is to provide students the very best in skills and developmental programming, designed by the P27 cadre of season professionals in all facets of baseball and ten...
Young Long Island baseball players were treated to a surprise visit from 2x World Series Champion Jim Leyritz this morning at St. Anthony’s HS. Although he may not have the fan recognition of one of the ‘Core 4’ members, it was Leyritz who helped launch the Yankees dynasty with the dramatic game-tying 3-R home run against Atlanta Braves closer Mark Wohlers in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series in Atlanta. The Yankees had been trailing 6-0 in the game, but had clawed back to 6-3 when Leyritz stepped in and crushed a hanging slider over the left field fence to give the Yankees new life–which they of course took advantage of and finished the series off at home. Incredibly, Leyritz was fortunate to play in three World Series total and hit 8 postseason home runs in 61 at ba...
The Chaminade Flyers are the 2019 NSCHSAA Champions with a 3-1 victory over St. Anthony’s pic.twitter.com/czHcPb827e — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 27, 2019 As soon as tryouts started, Logan Koester knew this team would be special. Scratch that, since the end of last season he knew. The George Washington-commit that mowed through the entire Catholic League, put an exclamation point on an outstanding season with 7.2 innings in the Championship Game against St. Anthony’s which enabled the Flyers to capture their 17th NSCHSAA Title and first since 2015. Early on, it appeared that this game would have a different outcome, though. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Marco Ali started the inning off with a double to left field. After a lineout to Sawyer Duarte for the fir...
Aidan Larkin broke the game open with a two-run single in Chaminade’s 6-4 victory over St. Anthony’s. He’s our @BsbLifestyle101 Player of the Game pic.twitter.com/5U9A8TTeMG — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 26, 2019 No. 1 seed Chaminade held off a seventh inning rally by No. 5 St. Anthony’s to win 6-4 and put themselves one win away from capturing the 2019 NSCHSAA Championship. Having not played since Wednesday, the Flyers were tasked with holding down a red-hot Friars offense that put up 20 runs in the previous 2 games. The Friars took an early 2-0 lead on an RBI single by Jack Calla and an RBI double by Cameron Leary in the bottom of the second inning, but senior RHP Bobby Dahl settled in after that. The Flyers offense answered right back in the bottom o...

Not only did he stay in the game, but he was outstanding–striking out 10 without issuing a walk in Kellenberg‘s 6-3 victory over St. Anthony‘s on Wednesday night at Mitchel Field. “I was hyped up for the first playoff game,” said Carroll. “I got the first strikeout, took the bruiser off the knee-it hurt a little bit–but just wanted to get back out there. I got through the first inning, gave up a run in the second and then the offense helped ...
In a move that is likely to reverberate throughout Long Island baseball, Paul Parsolano will be the new Head Coach of St. Anthony’s, where he was previously an assistant from 1995-2007. In fact, the last time St. Anthony’s won the CHSAA title was in 2000, when he was on staff. He is also credited with the rapid ascension of Franklin Parra from obscurity to being drafted by the New York Mets in the 11th round this past June. Parsolano had been the pitching coach of St. Joseph’s College since 2014, where he helped break their drought of winning the Skyline Conference championship in 2016. They also won it in 2018, in large part to his pitching staff. Here are some facts since he took over. 2 Conference Championships (2016, 2018) 2 Regular Season Championships (2015, 2017) 6...
