by Max Edelman FINAL: South Side 11 – Kennedy 5 A five run sixth inning gives South Side the win, as they take the first of three games between the two teams. pic.twitter.com/CFCJQtcRix — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 29, 2024 The South Side Cyclones came back from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the Kennedy Cougars, 11-5, at home. In a rare Monday morning matchup, the Cyclones combined for 11 hits, scoring two or more runs in four of the six innings they came to the plate. It was Matt Arnott on the mound as the starter for the Cyclones, but he was unable to start strong as the Cougars took the early lead in the first inning. After Brady Callahan singled to open the game, he would eventually travel all across the diamond, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Gavin Donoghue. One ...
Final: Division 10, South Side 1 WP: Mike Roy Matt Bolton: 2-for-3, 2 BBs, 2 runs scored, 4 SBs pic.twitter.com/CtvcZbQrWr — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 5, 2024 Division HS has been one of the true baseball powerhouses on Long Island dating back to the mid 1970s. Much of that is due to their grittiness, blue-collar attitude and attention to detail. Recently, however, they have been fortunate to have high-end talent that has really helped lead them to the top of the standings. Just since 2021, they have graduated Nick Roselli (Binghamton) and had back-to-back Diamond Award winner in Joe Yovino (Elon) and James Sill (SUNY Old Westbury). This year, they appear to have another one of those and Matt Bolton. The Binghamton-commit is off to a red-hot start to the 2024 season –...
by Mike Merolle Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s season preview series. South Side’s Sean Britt is the Axcess Baseball Player of the Game powered by @GCsports. He went 2-2 with 2 IB, an RBI double and a 3-run homer in the first that set the tone early for the Cyclones. pic.twitter.com/Bx5EpHUDGN — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 15, 2023 South Side finished another successful season last year with a record of 18-6, including the playoffs. Their season came to an end after a quarterfinals knockout by Garden City. Head coach Tom Smith looks to get across the finish line in his 11th year managing South Side. “There’s big shoes to fill,” said Smith. “For the last couple of years, I’ve had a [good] lineup. I graduated four All-County gu...
by Eddie Lennon B/1- South Side gets on the board first with a 3-run homer to right-center from Sean Britt. 3-0 Cyclones. pic.twitter.com/h3vRCWTFok — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 15, 2023 As the #3 seed in Nassau County Class A, South Side came into today’s game looking to make a statement. Between their ace, Justin Peralta, being dominant on the bump and Sean Britt’s explosive bat leading the Cyclones’ offense, South Side was in control through all seven innings. Queen College-commit Justin Peralta had great control of all his pitches on the mound today. His fastball was overpowering and his breaking balls were out pitches when he needed them. Peralta tossed five innings for South Side, striking out six batters and allowing three runs. Peralta was not perfect today, but he w...
by Andy Smith Final: South Side 13, Manhasset 1 WP: TJ Maher Maher also hit a grand slam Game 3 tomorrow at Manhasset pic.twitter.com/qea8TMnybU — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 17, 2021 South Side had a very successful 2022 – which followed up winning the County Championship in 2021. The Cyclones finished with an outstanding 16-2 record, but their playoff run did not go as planned. They suffered a couple of big injuries that made them vulnerable, and it unfortunately ended their season. Entering his eleventh season as the head coach, Tom Smith reflected on how the campaign ended. “We were playing teams in our bracket in the round robin who were in our conference. The more you see a team the easier it is to find ways to beat them especially without key players.” Two rece...
by Mike Anderson Grand slam by TJ Maher breaks the game open – South Side leads 10-1 in the third pic.twitter.com/Gix5YrXLP3 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 17, 2021 After reaching the Long Island Championship last year, South Side High School varsity baseball enters the 2022 season as contenders to defend their league title. They finished 2021 14-8, and had a wild ride all the way to the end, before falling 3-1 to Newfield in the Conference III LIC. This year, they’ll look to do more of the same, and have a lot of guys coming back to help them do so. South Side will be without some of their impact players from a year ago, such as catcher Jack Temple, center fielder Paul Mata, and shortstop Kyle Aromiskis. Temple is now playing Div-III football at USMMA, and Mata is runni...
It doesn’t get much better than 10 elimination games across Long Island to crown County Champions. Scratch that, it doesn’t get ANY better than that. The games ranged from Sag Harbor to South Side, and the great majority of them were close. I wish I could be at all the games but that’s just not possible, so I took my best guess as to which game to cover. I started at Sachem East, stayed for a few innings and made the short drive to Selden for Newfield’s game. The decision worked out well as Commack got out to an early 4-1 lead then I went to a Newfield and the score was 0-0 in the second inning. Here’s all the action. Nassau III South Side defeated Manhasset, 2-0, on the road behind a complete game, two-hit shutout by Danny Russell. This was a remarkable turn ...
by Andrew Connors Jack Temple’s 7th inning, go-ahead 3-R HR to propel South Side to the dramatic 8-7 win over Carey pic.twitter.com/ezbTx0uUnA — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 11, 2021 There are two magic words around this time of year and those two words are playoff baseball. The game between the South Side Cyclones and Carey Seahawks on Thursday night was the embodiment of those magic words as it was a back-and-forth dogfight the entire game that resulted in a dramatic 8-7 victory for South Side. Both sides had taken and lost the lead multiple times by the end of the game, but only one was strong enough to come together when it truly mattered. Daniel Russell was the starting pitcher for South Side and he quickly realized that the intensity for this game would be through...
