Shoreham-Wading River baseball

Who Is Aidan Crowley?

It seems every year the narrative is that Shoreham-Wading River ‘lose a lot of arms’ from the previous year. Once the season begins, they find another power pitcher that blows away the competition. Last year it was Gabe Romano who emerged to become a front line starter and this year it is Aidan Crowley. The 6’2 uncommitted right-handed pitcher has began 2019 with back-to-back no-hitters against Eastport-South Manor and John Glenn with a total of 22 strikeouts. “My goal going into every outing is to not give up any hits,” said Crowley, the younger brother of Jack who graduated in 2017. Last season, he performed well on varsity as a sophomore, he went 3-1 with an ERA in the 3s. That performance is good, but at Shoreham-Wading River where record-breaking numbers ...

Mason Kelly ripped the go-ahead 2-R single in the fourth inning to give Shoreham-Wading River the lead for good. The Furman-commit lined a two-run single to center field to give Shoreham-Wading River a lead that they would not relinquish. They came away with a 4-2 victory over new league rival John Glenn. Early on, pitching was dominant on both sides. A pitching match up juniors; right-hander Cullen SantaMaria for SWR and Matt Polestino, the southpaw for Glenn. The first order of business for Glenn was getting a hit, after getting no-hit by Aidan Crowley yeste...

On Sunday night, we profiled Christian Alicea. Now is Shoreham-Wading River 9th grader Liam Bowes, who is a power-hitting catcher that turned some heads down at the USA Complex in Cary, NC) Controlled aggression. It’s the phrase that comes to mind when you watch the swing of Shoreham-Wading River catcher Liam Bowes. As I watched swing-after-swing result in thunderous line drives at Gameday Sports in Port Jefferson, it became clear that a bright future lies ahead for Bowes. From his longtime hitting instructor and co...

Rocky Point Defeats Shoreham-Wading River to Capture First County Championship

by Brett Goldstein Rocky Point is your Class A Suffolk County Champions! They win by a final score of 7-3. pic.twitter.com/4wg8Sn1vpt — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 29, 2018 For the first time in program history, the Rocky Point Eagle are Suffolk County Class A Champions. Upon first glance, it seemed as if it may be a low-scoring affair, possibly a pitchers’ duel. Shoreham was sending LIU Brooklyn-commit, Ryan Mullahey, to the mound, and Rocky Point was sending Rob Milopsky to the hill. However, it was not a pitchers’ duel, ending in a Rocky Point victory with a score of 7-3. Senior second baseman John Rosman has been a valuable contributor to the Eagles offense as of late. He opened up the scoring in the second inning, when he hit a double to drive in Trey Miller. On his recen...

Rocky Point Wins Game One Of Suffolk County Class A Championship With Dominant Offensive Performance, 10-1

Game one of the Suffolk County Class A Championship between Rocky Point and Shoreham-Wading River was a highly-anticipated matchup between two powerhouse programs that are also bordering towns. Rocky Point came out swinging and displayed dominance on the road, winning 10-1. “Stay focused. We’re not naïve enough to think that this team will not be ready to play tomorrow,” said Rocky Point head coach Andrew Aschettino. “We know how good of a program [SWR] is, which isn’t to say anyone is intimidated, but there’s respect there so we definitely have a focused approach moving into tomorrow.” Senior pitcher Ryan Maciaszek tossed an impressive game, holding SWR’s offense to just one run. The right-hander went 6.2 innings, allowing just one run while striking out four and walking five. “It was a g...

Mount Sinai Uses the Long Ball to Power Past Shoreham-WR

Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is 8th grader Kyle Salvati who recorded the save in Mount Sinai’s 9-4 victory over Shoreham-Wading River pic.twitter.com/090WdVUNMO — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 7, 2018 It takes a pretty confident young pitcher to step on Shoreham-Wading River‘s home field and record a three inning save. Besides the fact that the current team entered the season at 14-1 and have reached double-digit runs TEN times in 15 games, they also have a bit of mystique at the field. They are the reigning Suffolk County Class A champions and it has a certain presence about it with names like Sal Mignano, Keith Osik, Bryan Sabatella and Eric Strovink immortalized with plaques on the away team dugout. And the field is literally located in the woods which only...

What is the Best High School to Recruit From?

One of the realities of being a college recruiting coordinator is that there’s only a finite amount of time to recruit. Sure, there’s an 18-game regular season but they can only make it to high school games when they don’t have their own games! The thing that I’ve noticed since I have followed the Long Island baseball community is that certain schools have produced impact college players that a much higher rate than other programs. Obviously, there are external factors that give certain schools advantages such as the socio-economics of the city, the average income of the parents, demographics, the quality of the school’s head coach/athletic director. There’s about 20 schools that have ran laps around the rest of the island in terms of producing talent. If you ...

How To Develop a Team-First Attitude

(Photo Credit: Bill Landon) by Sal Mignano An integral part of any successful team is for its members to have an unselfish, team-first attitude. Teams are sometimes successful in the win-loss column just due to pure talent, but that is not typically going to be a yearly occurrence. In fact, when a team wins just because of the pure talent it has, it is often without the excitement and exhortation of a tight unit. The major responsibility of this development is of the Head Coach. There are some teams, of course, that have some players who might be natural leaders, but ultimately the Head Coach is the one to foster that development through out the year. As a HS coach for 38 years, I had the fortune of coaching a ton of tremendous young men. My most successful and enjoyable seasons were the o...

PODCAST: Special Guest Sal Mignano Discusses Best Teams in Class A History

On this week’s podcast, special guest Sal Mignano joins host Vinny Messana to discuss the best teams in Class A Long Island history. Mignano retired second on the all-time Long Island wins list with 583, but has since been passed by Bob Ambrosini. He has seen plenty of the best teams, including some teams that he’s coached such as the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats in 1987 that were crowned New York State Class A champs. He’s also coached against the back-to-back NYS Champs from Bayport-Blue Point in 2013-’14 and Islip 2007-’08. He also coached in the Long Island Championship against the dominant Division teams. He provides unique insight as someone that has experienced these powerhouses first hand.

Q & A With Mike O’Reilly

(Photo Credit: Allison Rhoades/Peoria Chiefs) Before Brian Morrell was dominating Suffolk County Class A, there was Mike O’Reilly. The 2012 graduate of Shoreham-Wading River won the Carl Yastrzemski Award in his senior year, when he performed like a superhero and smacked two walk-off HRs in the playoffs and struck out 19 batters in the Long Island Championship game. It’s easy to forget as the years go by, but O’Reilly compiled a career record of 17-3 before going on to attend Flagler College. In 2015, he was named Peach Belt Pitcher of the Conference. He compiled a record of 7-3, with a 2.89 ERA and 94 strikeouts over 93.1 IP. He was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 27th round of the 2016 MLB Draft. Over his first two seasons, he’s actually taken his perfo...
