But head coach John Givargidze’s team, they are facing that challenge head-on. Givargidze, who is entering his 11th season as the head coach of the Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK Hawks, looks to rebound after a strong season that didn’t end the way anyone imagined. “We finished 20-8. We lost in the county finals on a walk-off grand slam with two outs. So we really couldn’t have gotten any closer to our go...

He had a .475 AVG, 7 HR, and 34 RBI at the plate while also being dominant on the mound posting a 7-0 record with a 0.73 ERA striking out 101 batters while only walking 6 over 47.2 innings pitched.  The team...

Plainview had a terrific season in 2021. They finished with a 14-7 overall record, and went as far as the county finals; they ended up losing the county finals to a great team in Massapequa. Givargidze had nothing but praise for how his team performed in an interview with Axcess Baseball.  “I am so proud of the way the boys came into the season last year with focus and a little chip on their shoulders,” said Givargidze. “It was a great group of kids who had fun together and most importantly, played for eac...

Plainview JFK Hopeful To Return to Winning Ways of 2017-’18

by Chris Sacchi John Givargidze‘s Plainview JFK baseball team, just like many across the island, is heading into the 2021 season with new challenges. Yet, while Plainview has the talent to overcome, they will have to adapt to a couple of unique circumstances. First, during preseason preparation, Givardgize says his team had seven practice/workout sessions cancelled due to COVID-19 issues. “The offseason has been kind of weird,”Givardgize said. “A lot of guesswork on a lot of it.” Yet, coach is choosing to look on the bright (and sunny) side. “I’m trying to see a bright spot in all this. Usually our preseason stuff is done in January, February, in the gym,” coach said. “So we’ve been lucky enough to be able to get outside, on the baseball field, and do a lot of our workout...

As a scout, it’s easy to stay quiet and walk away if you’re bored. As a reporter, you have to try to make something out of nothing. Being that I am both, I have to walk that fine line of telling the truth as a scout but generating buzz as a reporter. Other times, it’s really easy. An example of this was on November 8 at Prospect Sports for a ...

Recapping the BCP Pitchers & Catchers Showcase

Against all odds, Long Island was able to have a semblance of a baseball season in 2020. We started off about three months late, but I’m glad that the young ballplayers did not need to lose a year of development or playing time. In addition to games, players also have been able to attend showcases to make up for the lost time and increase their exposure to colleges. Sunday’s Pitchers & Catchers Showcase hosted by Blue Chip Prospects was an outstanding event for young players to attend as the book is now closed on the season. There was over a dozen schools in attendance, and when factoring in the social media coverage, the players were seen by thousands of viewers. I’m really glad I was in attendance because this was not simply a group of unsigned seniors hoping to go ...
