Brock Murtha’s no-hitter sends Sayville to the N.Y. state championship for the first time in program history! pic.twitter.com/HOYA7iindr — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 9, 2019 If you watched the Class AA Long Island Championship earlier in the day at St. Joseph’s, you were fortunate to watch a game filled with high drama, intensity, scoring changing and ultimately, a three-peat. The Class A Championship was just as intense but for the opposite reasons. Brock Murtha, Notre Dame-commit and consensus top player in the 2020 class on Long Island, struck out nine in a no-hitter to deliver Sayville their first Class A LIC in program history. They defeated Clarke (23-3-1) by a score of 1-0 with the lone run scoring in the top of the seventh with two outs on an RBI single by Jack...
FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2013, THE CLARKE RAMS ARE COUNTY CHAMPIONS!!!! FINAL: Clarke 7 Division 0 pic.twitter.com/pWdOtzXJB7 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 3, 2019 For the first time since 2013, the Clarke Rams are Class A County Champions. On Monday afternoon, Clarke blanked Division, 7-0, in the do-or-die game three. From the start of this game, it was never really close. Judging by the atmosphere on both sides of the stands and the pitching match up, it seemed this was going to be a close game. However, it never was. Colin Diez was handed the ball for Division and Chris Lydon got the start for Clarke. In the bottom of the 1st, Matt DeStefano gave Clarke an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to left field. Chris Lydon helped himself out, driving in a run in the bottom of the...
Brock Murtha on Sayville’s Game 1 victory. pic.twitter.com/SccMR2zoGo — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 31, 2019 Sayville took Game 1 of the Suffolk Class A finals, beating Rocky Point in eight innings by a score of 4-2. Right off the bat, it looked to be a pitchers’ duel, with Rob Milopsky getting the start for Rocky Point, facing off against Brock Murtha for Sayville. It certainly lived up to expectations, as the game required extra innings, with both starters each only allowing one run through the first seven innings. The hard throwing right handers traded zeroes for the first three innings, with Murtha particularly dominant, recording six strikeouts and only allowing one hit the first time through the order. He also contributed at the plate, leading off the top of the fourth ...
by James Ryder Playoff Baseball is all of the usual unpredictability with higher tensions and stakes added on top. Few games make this concept clearer than Sunday’s playoff matchup between the Sayville Golden Flashes and the Hauppauge Eagles. A thrilling pitching duel that saw a complete game win and a few other crazy moments led to a Sayville victory, 4-2. Hofstra-commit Ryan Levenberg took the mound for the Eagles and opened the game with two strikeouts. In the bottom of the first inning, Eric Foster allowed the only two runs of the day for the Eagles. Hauppauge got on base thanks to a walk from Anthony Ferrara followed by a first pitch single by Mike Knopf. The DH Joe Ferreri then hit a single up the middle to score Ferrara. Knopf and Ferreri would then steal second and third base, allo...
Huge strikeout to end the top of the 10th inning–Hauppauge looks to get it done pic.twitter.com/xj5QJMi3n5 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 2, 2019 Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Hauppauge hadn’t generated much of anything on offense. After a fortuitous defensive miscue got them on the board, they mounted a rally in the fifth inning. A sac fly by Mike Knopf got them to within two runs, a wild pitch scored Ryan Levenberg and an RBI single by Alex Knopf tied it up. Credit to both team’s pitching staffs to bear down from that point forward. Each pitcher appeared to wiggle in-and-out of trouble, but a big moment in the game came in the top of the sixth when Sayville No. 9 hitter Alex Millwater lined a single to left field and Ryan Levenberg, one of the ...
Big-time players love the high-intensity situations. Sayville freshman Brock Murtha has proven to be one of those players, and displayed that by nailing down the save with back-to-back strikeouts with runners on 2nd & 3rd, one out to preserve a 5-4 win over rival Rocky Point. “I love it,” said the freshman fireballer said in regards to having the ball in his hands in the high-leverage situations. “I love the feeling, I love everything. It’s a great feeling,” he added.
