On a hot & humid August afternoon, two players stole the show and stood above the rest in their respective brackets. Steven Rizzo (St. Anthony’s) captured the high school division and Vito Friscia (Hofstra) captured the college division in front of a packed crowd at Baseball Heaven. Rizzo led all high school hitters with 10 home runs, including seven in the first round. He defeated Matt Brown-Eiring (Connetquot 2020) in the championship round with two home runs. David Falco (Center Moriches 2019) smacked 3 HR, Brock Murtha (Saville 2020) hit two while Kyle Rausch (Longwood 2019) and Brown-Eiring each hit one. The college age players put on a clinic. St. Joseph 1B Paul Britt hit four home runs. He is a finalist for our Axcess Most Valuable Player for his amazing 2018 season for th...
by Brett Goldstein The Eagles win 4-3, on a walkoff home run by Joe Grillo. pic.twitter.com/qJ9WHNLQ3c — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 26, 2018 With one swing of the bat, Joe Grillo sent Rocky Point to the Suffolk Class A Finals to face Shoreham-Wading River in a rematch of 2016 semifinals. Grillo is no stranger to big games. He’s been a key cog for the Eagles since he debuted on varsity. Saturday, he was in the same spot. A Rocky Point win would send them to the county championship, but a loss would mean elimination. Grillo went five innings allowing three runs on four hits and four walks, to go with six strikeouts, effectively keeping his team in the game. The first two innings were relatively quiet, with neither team able to muster up much offense. Sayville looked to ...

Notre Dame-commit Brock Murtha had a strong day on the mound, going five strong innings, allowing only two runs with eight strikeouts. A sloppy first inning by Rocky Point resulted in Sayville taking a 2-0 lead. A leadoff walk was followed by a double, which led to Murtha being intentionally walked to load the bases. Jake Russo followed up with a hard ground ball to 3rd base, but an error allowed all runners to safely advance. The fol...
Final: Sayville 7, Bayport-Blue Point 3 WP: Brock Murtha (6 IP, 1 R, 6 K) pic.twitter.com/VvzOh6BCLv Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 27, 2018 Even when he doesn’t have his best stuff, Brock Murtha can find a way. On the home opener on a chilly afternoon against a playoff team, the reigning League 6 MVP and Notre Dame-commit put together a solid line of 6 IP, 1 R, 6 K, 2 H, 4 BB but he did benefit from a huge outfield assist from left fielder Dom Prevosto who fired a strike to end a bases loaded threat in the fifth inning with Sayville up 5-1. “It was good to get our first win as a team,” said Murtha. “I mean, I didn’t have my best stuff and I struggled to the plate a little bit but I got some great teammates out here making plays, throwing gu...
(Editor’s Note: Brock is a 2020 graduate of Sayville HS. He has played varsity since eighth grade, and his coming off a historic 2017 season in which he smacked 10 HR, won six games on the mound and recorded a save. He became the first ninth grader to be named first team All-Long Island by Newsday. He announced his verbal commitment to the University of Notre Dame this past week. The following words are his own…) by Brock Murtha Ever since I was a really little kid, I loved sports; baseball and football being my favorite. I never wanted to play with LEGOs, matchbox cars, video games, or other things that little kids were into. All I cared about was throwing a ball around. It didn’t matter the season, I wanted to be outside having a catch. The other thing I loved more than anyth...
