Sal Agostinelli

Q & A With Anthony Agostinelli

This past month, the Philadelphia Phillies made a miraculous run through the potent National League and captured the NL Pennant for the first time since 2009. Despite losing in a thrilling 6-game series to the Houston Astros, it was an incredible stretch for the Fightin’ Phils. One of the reasons the team was in such good position to make a run was due to the shrewd international signings of Long Island native Sal Agostinelli. The longtime members of the Phillies scouting department is the Director of International signings and was responsible for Ranger Suarez and Seranthony Dominguez (as well as current Astros RHP Hector Neris). Sal has been an integral member of the Phillies organization for over 30 seasons and also signed several of the members of the 2008 World Series championsh...

Sal Agostinelli: The Story of How An Undersized Long Island Catcher Became One of the Most Influential Men in Professional Baseball

(Editor’s Note: Story was originally published on Nov. 12, 2016) It was 1993 when Jay Hankins approached the Triple-A catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies with a question. “Hey Sal, did you ever think about being a scout?” “The only thing I know about scouting is that it’s old guys in chairs,” Sal responded. “Well, I think you would make for a good one,” he stated. As fate would have it, that catcher was Long Island native Sal Agostinelli, who went on to accept a position as the area scout for the Phillies and his area would be New York and New Jersey. As time went on and he had success in his coverage area, the front office tasked him with more and more territory. The next year was Delaware, then they added New England. By 1997, his territory was Canada through Delaware when they had big...

Recap of Antonia Agostinelli Memorial Tournament

Walk off hit gives Team Citius the championship 2-1 ! pic.twitter.com/m4tfxEvrVw — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) October 16, 2017 The 11th annual Antonia Agostinelli Memorial Tournament was a tremendous success. The two champions were Long Island Baseball and Team Citius. I bounced back-and-forth monitoring both games tonight. LIB put on a great offensive showing, defeating LI Storm by the score of 9-5, while Team Citius defeated Next Level Baseball 2-1 on a walk off hit by Adam Conte. Here are some other of my takeaways from the weekend: On Friday, Next Level defeated Motus Academy 4-1 behind a stellar performance by Ryan Martin (St. Francis Prep 2019) on the mound and another great offensive game from Aidan Larkin (Chaminade 2019). They played a clean game with strong defense an...

Recap of Dominican Republic Trip

What a tremendous experience it was for the 20 players who were a part of Sal Agostinelli‘s All-Star team this past week in the Dominican Republic. The competition was top-notch. All players were either already signed and playing on the Dominican Summer League teams of their respective organizations or very worthy of being signed. In fact, a number of Dominican players were signed right on the spot after their performances on the field. All five of the games were played in front of several MLB area scouts. Here are some notes from the five games. There were 2 teams–one from the class of ’17 and ’18 and one from ’19 and ’20. Each team played the Dominican Summer League teams from the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers...
