Sachem East

Jake King Commits to Iona University

While 2024 was not a great season for Sachem East, they did have to be thrilled with the progress of sophomore RJP Jake King. The big righty had a very solid season for the Arrows, compiling a 3.20 ERA over 6 starts with 27 strikeouts. He formed a formidable rotation along with Jamie Apicella and Austin Barrett.  Following the season, King took his game to the next level for the Body Armor Titans. He notched a 6-1record while firing 37 innings with a sparkling 1.10 ERA. He struck out 52 batters while yielding just 22 hits (.170 opponent AVG). His high school coach, Kevin Schnupp had the following to say: “Jake has become a team leader this year in our fall workouts. He’s looking to build off a successful sophomore campaign in a tough league. He was the type of pitcher with a bu...

Rafe Schlesinger Selected by Cleveland in the 4th Round of 2024 MLB Draft

Rafe Schlesinger became the first Sachem East alum in their 20-year history to be selected in the MLB Draft. The 2021 grad was selected in the 4th round by the Cleveland Guardians following his three-year career at the University of Miami where he became one of the top southpaws in the nation. The last Sachem alum to get selected was Alec Sole in 2014 by Tampa Bay out of St. Louis University. Rafe has been a high-profile name in the Long Island baseball community for several years. We first profiled back in early 2019 before he stepped foot on a varsity field. His pitching coach at the time, Neal Heaton, stated that he was ahead of where Steven Matz was at the same age. Matz, of course, went on to get selected by the New York Mets in 2009 and has been in the big leagues since 2015. Schlesi...

The Arrows has the misfortune of facing a 1st round draft pick in the first round, however, and they lost 2-0 to Pat-Med. “It was a cool experience but not something you want to face in the playoffs,” Kevin Schnupp said in regards to facing Josh Knoth. He put on quite a show for the scouts as...

The Longwood Lions sent junior CJ Forman to the mound against a formidable Sachem East team that entered with a record of 7-1. Forman was outstanding, as he went the distance and struck out five batters in the victory for the Lions as they were able to create a tie atop the standings. Sachem East countered with Austin Barrett, and he was very effective in the early going as the pitchers traded zeros for the first t...

Sixth Inning Rally Pushes Sachem East Over the Top in Pitcher’s Duel

by Andy Smith Alex Apicella on the season opener. Powered by Game Changer pic.twitter.com/hAvB1ZiEXZ — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 27, 2023 The Sachem North bats gave Austin Barrett of Sachem East some trouble early by loading the bases in the opening frame and having two runners in scoring position in the third.  Barrett was clutch in these situations and got out of the jams to hold the game scoreless. Ryan Barlow delivered a  strong performance on the mound for Sachem North and surrendered only one hit through five innings of play.  Barlow also went 2-for-3 at the plate today with two singles and one walk. Sachem North opened the scoring in the sixth inning off an RBI single by pinch hitter Yerkes.  Sachem East’s offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth by tacking on fo...

Since 2005, Schnupp has led them to numerous successful seasons during his long tenure.  Schnupp, a Sachem North alum, the only high school at the time, played college baseball at Dowling College.   Sachem East finished 2022 with a league record of 15-3 and an overall record of 16-6. The Arrows won their second League 1 Title in a row but lost in the playoffs.  Schnupp reflected on why the team fell short in their postseason run. “We wound up losing in the playoffs after some injuries to our pitching staff...

No. 8 William Floyd and No. 2 Sachem East squared off for the fourth time this season – in the most important game to date – and it was the upstart Colonials who came away with the 6-4 upset victory over the League I champs. During the regular season, Sachem East had won two of three, but coach Keith Kobasiuk stated that his team was “competitive all year, and we were competitive against them,” and that they are a “next day...

Coming Off County Finals Appearance, Sachem East Hungry to Take Next Step

By Michael Malaszczyk Coach Kevin Schnupp is ready for the 2022 season, and while proud of his team’s 2021 season, isn’t going to settle for second best. Sachem East had a great year in 2021, coming off of a season cut short in 2020. They finished with a 16-4 overall record and came just short of glory against Commack in the Suffolk County Championship. “Obviously we were disappointed that we didn’t finish what one of our preseason goals was,” said Schnupp. “But all in all it was a great season and the boys performed really well in a tough league.  We faced several top pitching prospects throughout the year. To look back on 2021 positively, Schnupp feels that what led his team to success last year was its blend of upperclassmen and rookies. Evan Fisher with his second HR of the game ...

Craig Pihlkar Fires Gem, Commack Defeats Schlesinger & Sachem East 5-3

Final: Commack 5, Sachem East 3 WP: Craig Pihlkar S: Jack Cascone pic.twitter.com/o2Q4uLSgXM — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 13, 2021 On a difficulty scale, it doesn’t get much tougher than winning a road game against a lefty flamethrower that’s a likely MLB Draft pick. But when it comes to being afraid or intimidated, that’s just simply not going to happen to Commack. The Cougars pulled off a wildly-impressive 5-3 win against Sachem East with Miami-commit Rafe Schlesinger on the bump throwing gas. Commack, who captured the 2017 County Championship in a similarly difficult match up at West Islip, had their own ace on the mound. With 6’5 RHP UCONN-commit Craig Pihlkar, they can play with anyone. The big righty earned the win, throwing 6 IP, allowing six hi...

Connetquot Starts off With a Bang and Recap of Opening Day for Section XI

I mean, you couldn’t have asked for anything more on Opening Day for Section XI baseball. Town of Brookhaven was generous enough to host the Coaches Memorial Opening Weekend which will feature tributes to Carmine Argenziano, Bill Batewell and Bob Ambrosini today – the three coaches who passed away over the previous year. That will take place today at Moriches. As far as the action on the field – it was thrilling and the energy from the dugouts and fans were absolutely electric. You could just feel the excitement and anger from all the emotions the past year. It was relieving to know we arrived at this point – even if many were frustrated with the route it took. In any event, I had a busy day. I drove to Kings Point to watch the Opening Round of the Skyline Conferenc...

Sachem East Ready To Get off the Races

by Chris Sacchi After a 2019 that saw Sachem East lose to the eventual champion Connetquot, head coach Kevin Schnupp and company were looking forward to a big 2020 season. Instead, just like many coaches across the country, Schnupp is hoping the impact of his 2020 seniors can still be felt, even though they never played their final high school games. “We had a lot of really talented kids that laid the foundation for this group this year,” Schnupp said. “Don Wille, one of our catchers, he went off to Monroe, you have Ryan Micheli, who went off to Stony Brook, another catcher. You have Max Weinstein playing at Mount St. Vincent’s, and you have a lot of other guys that were returning starters. We had 12 seniors on that team.” Despite losing them for the season, Schnupp was able to coach...

Suffolk County Leagues Not Yet Finalized

I was very surprised to hear that the Suffolk County leagues are not yet official, despite the chart being posted on Section XI’s website. Nassau County’s is posted and we are only a couple months away from the season at this point. So what’s the hold up? I was told that Riverhead’s status is the hold up. If you remember earlier in the school year, they were intending to eliminate sports for the 2020-21 year in order to save the district $960,000. They reversed course and reinstated sports. The issue was that Section XI had progressed to move on without them for this year and made the 2021 leagues. Now that they’re back, a decision will need to be made in regards to where to place them. Their enrollment would typically fall in either League 2 or 3. Once a deci...
