Head Coach Joe Esposito had the following to say: “We had a fantastic season going 19-1 and taking the league title. In playoffs, we ran into a tough pitching staff against Mount Sinai and lost two close games. Ball needs to bounce your way in playoffs and it didn’t for us last year. Hoping to capitalize on last season with many returning players. Two guys at the top of our staff have some experience now with Karman really stepping up big for us last season, going undefeated with a no-hitter. Justin Delaney should be tough to hit as well. Hitting wise, I expect Ryan Leniec and Ryan Hillery to lead this team. Along with some newcomers that show a lot of promise such as Kyle Messina, we are hoping to be very competitive.” The Golden Flashes got several outstanding performances last season from various individuals that will be back, but no doubt they will have the challenge of replacing two impact players that meant a lot to the program – Jack Quinlan and Mack Murtha. He was the League MVP and County Gold Glove winner behind the plate, and just a fantastic human that is now playing for Army at West Point. Also, losing Mack Murtha that batted .450 with 29 runs scored and 22 stolen bases at the top of the lineup.” Quinlan is the third recent Sayville graduate to play for the military joining 2020 grad Brock Murtha at Navy and 2021 grad Nick Buffardi in the Army along with Quinlan. In terms of the returning players, Sayville returns the league’s Silver Slugger in Ryan Leniec. The corner infielder batted .486 for the season with 3 HRs, 32 RBIs, six doubles and 35 hits. He is committed to SUNY Brockport. Shortstop Ryan Hillery batted .342 for the season with 2 HRs, 22 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Hillery is committed to St. Thomas Aquinas. Senior CF Mike Milo batted .310 with 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored for the season. They will count on him to set the tone and patrol the outfield. ‘23 RHP Ryan Karman (Sayville) #79 RHP among NY ‘23s, featured high spin off-speeds at our @TeamSteelNTL Scout Day 6/1/22. The previously mentioned Ryan Karman was nails all season as he went 7-0 with a 1.24 ERA over 45.1 IP. They will hope that the senior can come close to duplicating those incredible numbers. Senior Justin Delaney went 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA over 19 innings and he will step into a larger role this season. Ethan Alcantara, also a senior, went 3-1 with 3 saves and 1.22 ERA over 23 innings. That trio forms a formidable pitching staff for Sayville. In terms of newcomers, Esposito pointed to 10th grade football sensation Kyle Messina who will play the middle infield and junior Tyler Sebor who will be behind the dish. They will open up on March 27 against Comsewogue in a non-league game.

The post Sayville Looks to Follow Up On Fantastic 2022 Season appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

Sayville RHP Ryan Karman fired a no-hitter with 8 Ks over Harborfields in a 9-0 win pic.twitter.com/8LQUcYRZQY

— Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 18, 2022

It was a tremendous season for the Sayville Golden Flashes who captured the League VI Championship and made a deep playoff run before losing to Mount Sinai in the Conference IV Championship.

Head Coach Joe Esposito had the following to say: “We had a fantastic season going 19-1 and taking the league title. Playing in a Conference IV elimination game, Sayville sent RHP Ryan Karman to the mound against Brady Clark and the red-hot Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms. As he has done all season, Karman was lights-out. With the exception of hitting the first two batters of the game, he was dominant – taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finishing with a three-hit shutout in an 8- win for the Golden Flashes. The crowd was absolutely packed with fans of both schools being that there is only 3.1 miles separating the two schools. Early on, it appeared that the Phantoms would be riding the momentum of their previous wins against Shoreham-Wading River and Miller Place. Trey McGowan and Liam Stemmler were both hit by pitches to put the middle of the order up for BBP. Starting pitcher, Brady Clark, stepped in and squared to bunt with one strike but did not get it down and opted to swing away with two strikes. Karman struck him out for the first out and then induced an inning-ending 4-6-3 DP against cleanup hitter Max May to end the threat. Clark fired a 1-2-3 inning of his own in the first inning including a strikeout of West Point-commit Jack Quinlan. The game swung dramatically after that moment and Sayville took all the momentum. In the bottom of the second, although they didn’t score, Sayville did threat with back-to-back singles to start the inning by Ryan Leniec and Tommy Marino. BBP caught a break when Leniec strayed too far from the second base bag and was thrown out by catcher Logan Robertson. Clark wound up striking out AJ Capuano and inducing a pop out to Michael Argenziano. Karman went back out and worked around a one-out walk issued to Trey McGowan for another hitless inning. Sayville finally broke through in the third when they got a one-out hit by Michael Milo and took advantage of what could’ve been a 4-6-3 DP, which turned out to allow both runners to reach safely. Ryan Hillery ripped an RBI single to right and the throw got past the catcher to allowed Mack Murtha to score and make it 2-0 in favor of Sayville. They added another run on an RBI single by Ryan Leniec to make it 3-0. BBP briefly threatened in the third when an E5 allowed Max May to reach safely and a walk issued to Brendan Most brought the potential tying run to the plate. A bunt was popped up and caught by Karman and then a flyout to right and a ground out to third ended the threat. The Golden Flashes’ bats went back to work in the fifth. Mack Murtha got things started with a one-out opposite field double. Following an E6, Jack Quinlan crushed a long two-run HR to left center to make it 6-0 and blow the game open. Karman finally allowed some hits in the sixth. Max May, Matt Lombardo and Ryan Costa all singled to load the bases, but a first-pitch ground out to shortstop ended the jam. Liam Stemmler took the mound in the sixth and Sayville added a pair of runs to make it 8-0. Karman slammed the door shut in the seventh for the CG, 3-hit shutout to set up another date with Mount Sinai today – the team that defeated them on Saturday. Sayville will need to win twice, while Mount Sinai will need to win once to recapture the Conference IV title.

The post Ryan Karman Fires 3-Hit Shutout To Propel Sayville Into Conference IV Finals appeared first on Axcess Baseball.

Final: Sayville 8, Bayport-Blue Point 0
WP: Ryan Karman (CG, 3-hitter)

Jack Quinlan: 2-R HR

Sayville will face Mount Sinai tomorrow in the Conference IV Finals pic.twitter.com/qR3V6j80dK

— Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 23, 2022

The perfect remedy to bounce back from a tough loss is to get back on your home field with your ace on the bump.

Playing in a Conference IV elimination game, Sayville sent RHP Ryan Karman to the mound against Brady Clark and the red-hot Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms.
