Centereach Hopes Improved Defense Will End Postseason Drought

It has been 10 years since Centereach‘s last postseason berth. They have come tantalizingly close the past two seasons, as they came up just one win shy of the mandatory 10 victories to clinch a berth. “Two years in a row we’ve needed to win just one game and I think about it everyday,” said Head Coach Pete Cammarata, who is entering his third year at the helm. He was previously the assistant since 2004. “I’m always thinking what kind of change or tweak we need to make to win one more game. That’s in my thought process all the time,” he added. One aspect of the team that he feels is upgraded is the team’s defense – which was their undoing the previous two seasons. “Defensively we will be a good team – we will catch the...

Q & A With Centereach Head Coach Pete Cammarata

Pete Cammarata is entering his second season as Head Coach of Centereach baseball. He was previously the assistant for Mike Herrschaft since 2004. In his first season, the Cougars went 9-11 and missed the playoffs by one game. After repeating as League III champs in 2010–thanks to a .375 team average, it’s been eight consecutive postseason-less seasons for the Cougars. They will give it their best shot this seas...

Strong LI Expos Team Remains in First With DH Sweep of Huntington Blue Devils

The LI Expos remain in first place of Town of Brookhaven’s summer varsity league after a strong outing from their pitcher, Alex Scheitzer. The tall right hander’s slow delivery gave way to a sneaky quick fastball with great movement, in a game that started late after Huntington forfeited the first game of the double header. Scheitzer, a Sachem North 2017 graduate, was unfazed by the delay and went out and threw six and two thirds strong innings of one-run ball striking out seven Blue Devils. “My teammates helped me stay into it [the game] they helped me stay focused,” said Scheitzer. “I just wanted to go out there, throw strikes, stay calm and do what I’ve done for years.” The Expos would go on to win the second game by a decisive score of, 9-1, after the Blue Devils started with eig...
