The cream rises to the top on merit alone and Sachem East rose to the occasion from the first at bat–when center fielder and Iona-commit Dan Palermo launched a solo shot to left off Max Nielsen on their way to an 8-2 victory over Ward Melville. With the victory, the Arrows advance to face West Islip in the finals of Bracket #4. “We always like facing Ward Melville–they’re our biggest rival, we always get hyped for these kind of games and we love it,” said Palermo. They continued to tack on runs. Craig Leonard and Dylan Stalzer ad...

Ty Acker Delivers Walk-Off Hit to Propel Sachem East to 6-5 Win in 10 Innings

Walk-off single by Tyler Acker and Sachem East wins 6-5 in 10 innings ! pic.twitter.com/Jd3BEX8H2x — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 1, 2019 In a game featuring several high-profile players, it was sophomore Ty Acker who was the difference. The back-and-forth affair that featured five lead changes went 10 innings ended on a bloop single by Acker to score catcher Ryan Micheli and send the team into a frenzy. The story line entering the game was the matchup between sophomore stud Rafe Schlesinger and Molloy-commit A.J. Verga, who was named to our Preseason All-Long Island list. Schlesinger was understandably nervous in the first couple innings pitching in front of a big crowd with three Division-I coaches holding radar guns behind the plate. Floyd capitalized right away on an RBI ...

Long Island’s Top Pitchers Throw at Suffolk CC

Today was a scout’s dream, as every one of the top pitchers on Long Island were in one spot, throwing to a catcher. During a season, seeing all of these arms would probably take a full season but thanks to the loaded roster of the HDMH Titans, this was all possible today. The Mets, Phillies, Yankees, Tigers and Phillies were in attendance, Here’s a breakdown of them in the order they threw: David Falco, RHP, Center Moriches (Maryland-commit) Maryland-commit David Falco (Center Moriches 2019). Will transition to starting rotation after being closer for State Championship winning team last year. Fastball touched 94 last season, sat 89-92 MPH pic.twitter.com/z3b5ttT7Zo — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) January 30, 2019 Falco is well-built at 6’4 220 lbs. It is likely he...

Who Is Rafe Schlesinger?

Not many people are more qualified to evaluate pitchers–specifically southpaws than Neal Heaton. The former 12-year MLB veteran had worked with a number of the top pitchers from Long Island the past several years, including Steven Matz from the time he was 8-years-old so I don’t take his opinion lightly. When he drops a comparison to a big league pitcher I take notice. Tonight while watching Rafe Schlesinger throw a bullpen session, Neal had some glowing reviews of the promising young pitcher. “He’s the best pitcher I’ve had since Matz and I think he’s further along than him at the same age. I think he’s going to be very similar to Chris Sale and Josh Hader with his arm slot and his velocity,” he added. The sophomore has yet to log significan...

Who Has The Best Tools on the Island?

Regardless of where you’re from, who your parents are, what size you are and what your nationality is, if you’re good you will be found. People love to diminish baseball for being a sport that is tilted towards the upper-middle class that can afford to travel the nation. That is simply not the case. A good scout will locate the top players in their area. Look no further than Kyle McGowin, who hails from the smallest town in New York (Sag Harbor) or Franklin Parra who came from the Dominican Republic and made a name for himself in extremely quick fashion at a school not commonly associated with baseball prowess (Copiague). With the 2019 season right around the corner, I will attempt to name the tools associated with being an impact baseball player and name the players that posse...

What Are the Major Storylines for 2019? (High School Edition)

With 2019 upon us, it is time to turn the page and start to think about the upcoming season. College ball is just 44 days away, and that will be here before you know know. First, let’s start off with high school. Below are some of the major storylines to watch for this upcoming season. The more things change, the more they stay the same? At the high school level, we had repeat winners at the AA level (Massapequa), A (Wantagh) and Suffolk AA’s winner (West Islip) won their third since 2014. It came as a bit of a surprise just considering the quality of teams they were facing. Oceanside was so talented that they would’ve been the prohibitive favorites in Vegas after they swept the Chiefs in April and started out 12-0. Massapequa still found a way to run the table in the pos...

Insider Notes: HS Seniors That Are Making a Strong Case to Get Drafted

Every year around this time we think we have a good idea who will get drafted in June. The reality is that there’s no way to predict the future; players performances are wildly unpredictable and that’s not even factoring things out of their control. For example, I thought a player like Angelo Navetta would have gotten drafted had he performed exceptionally well in 2018. All he did was slug .616 with 49 RBI, showing that his 2016 season was no fluke and he is every bit as talented offensively as he is defensively. Still, he wasn’t drafted. Don’t tell me his size is a deterrent, because there were position players under 6’0″ drafted across the nation. Then there’s Matt Hogan, who I thought just needed to prove he was healthy to be considered a pro pl...

Where Things Stand With the Top Prospects in the 2019 Class

Yes it may seem like the 2019 draft is a long time away, but the reality for MLB organizations is that the preparation began immediately following the 2018 draft. Area scouts have had workouts and will continue to monitor their high-follows very closely from now until June. Below is a list of the eight players I believe have a chance to get drafted next year, and how they have evolved since I first watched each of them. Jason Diaz, RHP, Kellenberg Jason Diaz set such a high standard for himself that it was always going to be difficult to continue to outperform expectations. Having a 94 MPH at 16-years-old can be a blessing and a curse. From my perspective, I was blown away with him as a sophomore. His natural stuff, his composure, the similarities to Marcus Stroman, etc, put himself in eli...

My Playoff Observations

What a chaotic week. What started off as a beautiful Monday with every game being played in 70 degree weather quickly turned into a slog that featured suspended games due to the weather on Tuesday, only one game being played on Wednesday, a productive Thursday, a cold/windy day on Friday and a complete washout today. Plenty of action occurred when the games were actually able to be played and here’s my biggest takeaways so far: The biggest surprise so far has been No. 17 Bay Shore coming out of nowhere to shock both No. 1 Smithtown East and No. 9 Connetquot. Both of these teams feature a myriad of Division-I and II players that have excelled against elite competition for years. Smithtown East threw their Hofstra-commit at them and the Marauders came away with a 7-4 victory on Monday....

Ward Melville Defeats Sachem East, 5-3, And Advances To Face West Islip

When two League 1 foes square off, it always promises to be a great ballgame . The Ward Melville Patriots won the game, 5-3, with Chris Buehler earning the win over Sachem East‘s ace Roman Dorosh. This matchup proved to be a gritty battle between two rival teams. LIU Brooklyn-commit Buehler earned the win after tossing five and two thirds innings. The crafty lefty threw five innings of three-hit ball but ran into trouble in the sixth. Buehler was able to breathe easy on the mound, however, because Ward Melville’s offense put three runs up for him in the first. Second base and shortstop combo Brady and Logan Doran started the inning off with back-to-back base hits, with Brady reaching third on Logan’s hit. A wild pitch from Dorosh produced a close sliding play at home but the tag was ...
