Coming off a 17-6 season that included a trip to the third round of the playoffs and 5th consecutive League Championship, the Rocky Point Eagles enter the season hoping to replicate much of the success they had a season ago. Head coach Anthony Anzalone, who is entering his 6th year as the Eagles head coach, recapped what was overall a successful season, as well as the recent success the team has enjoyed over the last few years. They also won the 2022 Class A Suffolk County Championship. “We lost ...
Dom Carbone struck out 10 and allowed just 2 hits and an unearned run in Rocky Point’s 5-1 win over Comsewogue. He was the Axcess Preseason Player of the Year and today’s Player of the Game Powered by @GCsports pic.twitter.com/38gtY96o3a — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 10, 2023 Last year, Dom Carbone was one of the several high-end Division-I players on Rocky Point’s Suffolk County Championship winning team. But as the calendar turned to 2023 and four of those players graduated, he is now the leader of the team. The Eagles might be a little younger, but they are just as hungry and fundamentally sound as they ever were under coach Anthony Anzalone who has them believing in themselves. Dom Carbone, who we named the Axcess Preseason Player of the Year, and is among the top ...
Rocky Point captures the 2022 Suffolk Class A Championship ! Dominick Carbone fired a complete game with 12 strikeouts to earn the W They advance to the Class A Long Island Championship against the winner of Calhoun-Clarke pic.twitter.com/b10JAjErzR — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 30, 2022 From the time the 2021 season ended against Harborfields. Rocky Point knew that they had the chance to have a special season in 2022. “After the first round exit, we knew we would be returning the same team – minus James Maggio, who is doing great for St. Joseph’s. We knew we had the team that could be the last team standing.” It’s not often a team has the star power that the Rocky Point Eagles had. They didn’t just have “D-I commits”, they had ...
2-R single by sophomore AJ Aschettino to break the game open for Rocky Point pic.twitter.com/EuGJ31H4yW — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 30, 2022 2022 was a banner year for Rocky Point who captured the Class A Suffolk County Championship with a victory over the reigning champs, Mount Sinai. They featured a team loaded with four Division-I commits – Cody Miller (Axcess Preseason Player of the Year), Sean Hamilton, Dominick Carbone and Nic Benhardt. But as we know, it takes contributions up-and-down the roster to truly make a championship team. Rocky Point received a tremendous season from sophomore second baseman, AJ Aschettino, son of retired coach Andrew Aschettino who led the program to their first County Championship in 2018. He batted .328 over 80 plate appearances with...
Postgame interview with Rocky Point HC Anthony Anzalone following their season opening 2-1 victory over East Islip pic.twitter.com/iASJHbpzTa — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 30, 2022 This was a game that I had circled on the calendar. The reigning Conference IV Long Island Champs on the road against one of the most talented teams in Suffolk. Both teams sending their hard-throwing southpaw ace to the hill. Rocky Point came out on top, 2-1, in our Ken Kortright Agency Game of the Week led by their four Preseason All-Long Island Players. While baseball is a team sport, and Rocky Point certainly has talent all over the field, it doesn’t hurt to have four Division-I commits that all have varsity experience. Carbone, the reigning League MVP squared off against Stony Brook-comm...

And when you have a team as talented and as deep as Rocky Point, that is very possible. Though they were upset in the playoffs and eliminated by Harborfields, the Eagles had themselves a great year. Rocky Point was the top seed in League IV last year, and their 16 wins tied them for the most in Section XI along with Mt. Sinai, who was the top seed in League V. What made their season all the more impressive was the competition that they faced: six of their nine opp...

A large part of that team was LHP/OF Joey Grillo who was among the top players on Long Island that season both at the plate and on the mound. Three years later, and it’s another southpaw pitcher and lefty bat that is performing exceptionally well for the Eagles except he’s just a sophomore – which makes it even more impressive. He’s batting .510 for the season – fired a no-hitter against East Hampton last week and followed that up with a great outing today against Hil...
Walk-off single by Kyle Callahan and Rocky Point defeats Shoreham-Wading River, 4-3, in 10 innings ! pic.twitter.com/520eBR5wGZ — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 23, 2019 Rocky Point won the first County Championship in program history in 2018, and came very close to winning another in 2019 with a new Head Coach and only 13 players on the roster. That’s a testament to the culture that former coach Andrew Aschettino instilled, but also the caliber of coach that Anthony Anzalone is. Anzalone, who was an outstanding hitter in his own right at Rocky Point and Adelphi University, will guide a team in 2021 that has a ton of promise. While they graduated a big senior class in 2019 – headlined by League MVP Mike Gunning – they only had two seniors graduate in 2020, neith...
One of the fallouts of the pandemic was all the impacts on the college athletics landscapes. While all schools were hit hard, others were hit worse. Schools like Bridgeport still have uncertainly – at one point they were going to be acquired by Sacred Heart, but this article claims the deal fell through. Regardless, athletes were forced to make tough decisions and some players opted to go in a different direction. One of those athletes is Joey Grillo. He announced he will be transferring to Division-II powerhouse Limestone College in South Carolina. The 2018 Rocky Point grad led the Eagles to their first and only Suffolk County Class A title in program history during his senior season. He had a phenomenal postseason run including a walk-off against Sayville. For his career, he compil...

On Sunday, the Wantagh Warriors defeated the Rocky Point Eagles by a score of 4-2 to capture their third consecutive Class A Long Island Championship. The highly anticipated pitching matchup between Joe Grillo and Anthony Fontana was everything that was expected, as both starters produced for their team. However, Fontana got the best of the Rocky Point lineup. He went the distance, allowing no earned runs on four hits. “This is incredible, three years in a row I could cry right now this is o...
The Eagles win 4-3, on a walkoff home run by Joe Grillo. pic.twitter.com/qJ9WHNLQ3c — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 26, 2018 With one swing of the bat, Joe Grillo sent Rocky Point to the Suffolk Class A Finals to face Shoreham-Wading River in a rematch of 2016 semifinals. Grillo is no stranger to big games. He’s been a key cog for the Eagles since he debuted on varsity. Saturday, he was in the same spot. A Rocky Point win would send them to the county championship, but a loss would mean elimination. Grillo went five innings allowing three runs on four hits and four walks, to go with six strikeouts, effectively keeping his team in the game. The first two innings were relatively quiet, with neither team able to muster up much offense. Sayville looked to strike in the third innin...
Vinny Messana (VM): First, looking at your stats is your batting average in 2005-06, led the county. .550 in ’05 and .552 the next year. What do you remember about that? Anthony Anzalone (AA): It was all about the process. I remember a few years back [head coach Andrew Aschettino] brought me up as a freshman. I remember playing Kings Park and remember rolling everything over. If I’m going to be a good player , I’m going to need to hit the ball all over the field so I worked on my craft. I just simplified things and was a foot-down guy. Ashe, gave me the nickname ‘Slappy’ over it. VM: Would you say you developed more power as you got older? AA: I was a left-center guy. I wasn’t much of a pull guy until my college years where I let loose a little bit and didn’t worry about getting a hit and ...
