Rocky Point Defeats Shoreham-Wading River to Capture First County Championship

by Brett Goldstein Rocky Point is your Class A Suffolk County Champions! They win by a final score of 7-3. pic.twitter.com/4wg8Sn1vpt — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 29, 2018 For the first time in program history, the Rocky Point Eagle are Suffolk County Class A Champions. Upon first glance, it seemed as if it may be a low-scoring affair, possibly a pitchers’ duel. Shoreham was sending LIU Brooklyn-commit, Ryan Mullahey, to the mound, and Rocky Point was sending Rob Milopsky to the hill. However, it was not a pitchers’ duel, ending in a Rocky Point victory with a score of 7-3. Senior second baseman John Rosman has been a valuable contributor to the Eagles offense as of late. He opened up the scoring in the second inning, when he hit a double to drive in Trey Miller. On his recen...

Rocky Point Wins Game One Of Suffolk County Class A Championship With Dominant Offensive Performance, 10-1

Game one of the Suffolk County Class A Championship between Rocky Point and Shoreham-Wading River was a highly-anticipated matchup between two powerhouse programs that are also bordering towns. Rocky Point came out swinging and displayed dominance on the road, winning 10-1. “Stay focused. We’re not naïve enough to think that this team will not be ready to play tomorrow,” said Rocky Point head coach Andrew Aschettino. “We know how good of a program [SWR] is, which isn’t to say anyone is intimidated, but there’s respect there so we definitely have a focused approach moving into tomorrow.” Senior pitcher Ryan Maciaszek tossed an impressive game, holding SWR’s offense to just one run. The right-hander went 6.2 innings, allowing just one run while striking out four and walking five. “It was a g...

Grillo’s Walk-off Homer sends Rocky Point to Class A Final

by Brett Goldstein The Eagles win 4-3, on a walkoff home run by Joe Grillo. pic.twitter.com/qJ9WHNLQ3c — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 26, 2018 With one swing of the bat, Joe Grillo sent Rocky Point to the Suffolk Class A Finals to face Shoreham-Wading River in a rematch of 2016 semifinals. Grillo is no stranger to big games. He’s been a key cog for the Eagles since he debuted on varsity. Saturday, he was in the same spot. A Rocky Point win would send them to the county championship, but a loss would mean elimination. Grillo went five innings allowing three runs on four hits and four walks, to go with six strikeouts, effectively keeping his team in the game.  The first two innings were relatively quiet, with neither team able to muster up much offense.  Sayville looked to ...

Sayville Fights Off Elimination Against Rocky Point

Here’s Notre Dame-commit Brock Murtha on the win pic.twitter.com/lXgF03i8pR — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 25, 2018 by Brett Goldstein Sayville, coming off of extra innings thriller against Southampton, clobbered Rocky Point on Friday, winning by a score of 14-4. Notre Dame-commit Brock Murtha had a strong day on the mound, going five strong innings, allowing only two runs with eight strikeouts. A sloppy first inning by Rocky Point resulted in Sayville taking a 2-0 lead. A leadoff walk was followed by a double, which led to Murtha being intentionally walked to load the bases. Jake Russo followed up with a hard ground ball to 3rd base, but an error allowed all runners to safely advance. The fol...

Kevin Sambuco Shines in 2-Hit Shutout Over Rocky Point

Final: Hauppauge 2, Rocky Point 0 WP: Kevin Sambuco (2-hit shutout) pic.twitter.com/CuxDipp61g — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 3, 2018 With the forecast calling for heavy rain beginning at 1pm, there was a 3-hour window to get in the game. Hauppauge starter Kevin Sambuco did it in less than half. The senior RHP carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but settled for a two-hit shutout in Hauppauge’s 2-0 victory over new League 6 rival Rocky Point, needing only 69 pitches to record 21 outs to improve the Eagles’ to 3-1 on the young season. He was starting opposite Bridgeport-commit Joey Grillo, who was named to our Preseason All-Long Island list last month. Grillo and Sambuco traded zeros for the first five innings; doing so in different ways. Hauppauge made ...

Q & A With Joey Grillo

(Photo Credit: Joseph D. Sullivan) One of the story lines that slipped through the cracks in Suffolk County Class A was the terrific season by Rocky Point in 2017. They began the season 13-1 and finished with an overall record of 17-5. Their team was led by James Weisman, Joe Grillo, Brian Forbes, Rob Milopsky among others. Grillo, a University of Bridgeport-commit, will be back this year and is setting his sights set high. He batted .411 (30-for-73) with 3 HR, 20 RBI, 21 runs, .500 OBP and 1.158 OPS at the plate. On the mound, he was 4-1 with a 2.22 ERA and 35 K over 34.2 IP. He didn’t mince words when he discussed his goals for 2018 with Vinny Messana. Here’s what he had to say: Talk a little about your experience with the college recruiting process and how you decided to com...

Bayport-Blue Point Avenges 2016 Playoff Walk-Off loss to Rocky Point, Win 4-0

Head Coach Jim Moccio and the Bayport Blue-Point Phantoms are treading unfamiliar water this playoff season coming in as a seven seed. Despite their low-seeding, BBP has come out fighting in this tournament defeating the No. 2 seed Sayville , and now the No. 3 seed Rocky Point. Hard throwing RHP Josh Monturo went the distance for BBP with a complete game shutout recording seven strikeouts, one walk and five hits. He finished his day at the plate 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. “At the plate I was just trying to attack fastballs; that’s what I’ve been doing all season and it has been working out well,” said BBP pitcher Monturo. “Staying calm is key, playoffs get a little hyped up so I just try to stay calm and make hard contact.” Rocky Point called upon their LHP Joey Grillo for this play...

All-Around Effort By Rocky Point Propels Them Past Newfield

As the clouds parted to make way for a beautiful day at Bethpage Ballpark, Rocky Point took the field against Newfield for a non-league match up. Rocky Point was carried to a 10-3 win by the arms of James Weisman and Colin Brodsky, who allowed just three hits between them, and a strong offensive outing–particularly from the middle of the line up. Not only did Weisman get the win, he drove in the first run of the game on what appeared to be a triple, however on appeal he neglected to touch first on his way around the bases and was called out. Weisman worked well with the lead, walks got him into a couple of jams, but he didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning. Rocky Point took a 1-0 lead into the third when they began to open the game up. First baseman Brian Forbes drove in t...
