Friday Night Recap (2/26) Powered by Orlin & Cohen

Yesterday was the first taste of a day filled with college baseball action in close to one year. Three local Division-I programs were in action. We covered Stony Brook’s season-opening DH sweep over Sacred Heart, which you can read about here. Here’s the other two schools as well. Division-I: St. John’s defeated UMASS-Lowell by the score of 2-1 in a swift 2 hours, 18 minutes. Nick Mondak got the start for the Red Storm and was effective, going six shutout innings with seven strikeouts, allowing just two hits and a walk. His offense did not give him much to work with against UMASS-Lowell starter Collin Duffley. The offenses traded zeros for the first three innings, but the Johnnies got on the board in the home half of the fourth inning on an RBI ground out off the bat of M...

Hofstra Splits Season-Opening DH At Seton Hall

Rob Weissheier CRUSHES a go-ahead 2-R HR to left and Hofstra takes a 3-2 lead in the seventh pic.twitter.com/yCH76mkziI — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 21, 2021 When I saw Hofstra‘s schedule updated to include a season opening DH against Seton Hall on 2/21, I immediately changed my plans. Nevermind that it was a 2 hr, 15 minute drive to the game and the weather was flirting with below freezing. So with a 12pm start in South Orange, NJ I hopped in the car and made the drive and arrived just after first pitch. Game 1 Hofstra came out of the gates firing, scoring two runs in the top of the first on a wild pitch that scored Austin Gauthier, who led off the game with a double, and on a sac fly from Brian Goulard that scored Anthony D’Onofrio. It appeared the Pride wo...

Three Hofstra Players Selected to Preseason All-CAA Team

The Colonial Athletic Association released its Preseason All-CAA team this week, and it included three Hofstra players – CF Anthony D’Onofrio (Wantagh 2018), 1B Robert Weissheier (Kellenberg 2016) and SS Austin Gauthier. While Hofstra was off to a poor 4-10 record to begin the 2020 season, it was not due to their offense. They hit .302 as a team, which was 27th in the nation. If not for three one-run losses against New Mexico, the record would’ve looked a whole lot different. The offense is reason for optimism yet again. Gauthier was off to an amazing start with a .411 average, 6 doubles, one triple, three HRs, 11 RBI and 20 runs scored. More impressively, he led the league with a .515 OBP and .714 SLG. The senior has a legitimate chance to play professional baseball afte...

Fall Ball Series Powered by East Coast S & P: Hofstra University

Special thanks to East Coast Strength & Performance for sponsoring this year’s Fall Ball Series. Make sure to check out their website by clicking here. Teams that return their impact players from the previous years typically improve on their success. Additionally, in this environment of advanced stats and OPS (on-base + slugging percentage), teams that outslug their opponents will typically perform well in the aggregate over a long season. Small samples sizes can cause some turbulent results but ...

Hofstra Offense Stay Hot in 9-5 Victory Over Long Island University

by Tony Genualdo The Hofstra University Pride defeated the Long Island University (LIU) Sharks 9-5 on Wednesday, March 11, at University Field in Hempstead. Hofstra was looking to bounce back in their home opener after being swept last weekend by University of New Mexico Lobos. Despite scoring 34 runs in that series, they lost all three games in the bottom of the ninth inning. Meanwhile, LIU was doing the sweeping last weekend in their home opening series against the Saint Peter’s University Peacocks. Giovanni Ciaccio got the afternoon started for the Sharks as he hit the first pitch from Steven Boscia over the left field wall to give LIU an early 1-0 lead. A Carlton Harper RBI double later in the inning added one more run. Hofstra head coach John Russo pulled Boscia after just one inning ...

Fall Ball Series: Hofstra

We continued our Fall Ball Series at Hofstra yesterday, where the Pride hosted Queens College in a scrimmage. They looked good in yesterday’s scrimmage. They got on the board early and often and won by the scores of 12-1 and 9-3. While the results of the fall do not count, it is a positive sign to see a pitching staff throw strikes and fundamentally solid baseball. The Colonial Athletic Association is historically a difficult conference that featured four 30-win teams (Northeastern, UNC-Wilmington, William & Mary, Delaware) last season.   The Pride struggled in 2017, but they are returning their top four leading hitters (Steven Foster, Vito Friscia, Mikey Reisner, Teddy Cillis) in addition to their top two power hitters (Friscia and Vinnie Costello) and will be hoping that l...

The Titans have done a tremendous job of getting their ballplayers to the next level. A vast majority of the local players recognize that and have chosen to play with them. “Wh...

The Next Level Titans rolled through a 64-team tournament with an undefeated 7-0 record this week and they now qualify for the prestigious Perfect Game tournament in Jupiter, FLA which will feature the top amateur teams from across the world. During the tournament, they scored 64 runs while allowing only 10. Rob Weissheier, a 2016 graduate of Chaminade that is committed to Hofstra, was named the MVP of the tournament. Head Coach Shaun Manning stated that the team received tremendous defense all tournament from Cameron Tomaiko. The junior from St. Anthony’s made two stellar plays in their extra inning victory. The first came on a diving catch in the gap and the second came on a perfect relay throw to nail the would-be winning run in the seventh inning. The Titans turned eight double p...
