Final: LIU Post 4, Molloy 0 WP: James Varela (9 IP, 0 R, 6 K) The Pioneers advance to face No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas tomorrow at 12pm pic.twitter.com/WlG1LmE4rs — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 10, 2018 It’s been one of those seasons for James Varela of LIU Post. The junior RHP has been lights-out from his first start of the season. Today was no different in his complete game shutout over No. 2 Molloy in the first-round of the ECC Tournament. The Pioneers came away with the 4-0 victory, advancing to the winner’s bracket of the tournament. The Pioneers went down 1-2-3 in the first inning but the bats went to work in the second inning. Cleanup hitter Dave Brehm got things going with a single to left field. Michael Manzione was the next batter and he launched a deep fly b...

LIU Post Sweeps Doubleheader over Queens College

LIU Post pitched their way to two wins in a double-header against Queens College on Saturday, taking the first game 3-1 before winning the second 2-0. The first game was dominated pretty thoroughly by Post sophomore Noah Lorenzo. The southpaw went 8.1 innings and struck out five while allowing eight baserunners to reach. He left with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth after throwing almost 120 pitches, but redshirt senior reliever Brian Tinney came in and struck out the final two batters in emphatic fashion to give the Pioneers the victory. Lorenzo improved to 4-2 for the year on the win and lowered his ERA from 4.06 to 3.59. Zach Fritz’s patient effort at the plate was the catalyst for Post’s offense in the first game, as the first basemen went 2-3 with an RBI double, a run scored o...

LIU Post Baseball Preview: Pioneers Looking to Repeat as ECC Champs

Freshman JJ Lantigua has increased his velocity since getting on campus and looks like he could be a weapon out of the bullpen pic.twitter.com/uZiWtUFKY8 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 25, 2017 The LIU Post baseball team has a lot to look forward to this season. After a seven-year title drought, the Pioneers finally recaptured the Division-II East Coast Conference title last season, defeating Molloy College 9-7. Now, they turn to 2018, with a sight of taking home back-to-back championships. In 2017, scoring runs became routine for the Pioneers as they notched double-digit run totals six times throughout the season. That includes a 20-run, 21-hit outburst against Merrimack. The lineup will look almost the same coming into this season. Outfielder Kenny Daley and catcher ...

Which Players From Long Island Could Get Drafted? Part 2

Back in January, we did the first part of this series. I promised there would be a Part 2, and here it is. This is based off of my observations and the opinions of the local scouts. Rob Andreoli (LIU Post) The ECC Player of the Year was spectacular from day 1. He compiled 73 hits, walked more times (24) than he struck out (22) and was successful on 22 of 26 stolen base attempts. Despite hitting leadoff, he was able to drive in 44 runs and launch five home runs. He is 6’2″and plays a terrific center field as well–leading the team in outfield assists with six. He did battle an injury towards the end of the season that compromised his speed, but he continued to play at a high level. Ben Brown (Ward Melville) As I stated yesterday, Ben returned to the mound after a serious ap...

LIU Post Pioneers Claim ECC Title With Thrilling Win Over Molloy

The LIU Post Pioneers are ECC Champions for the first time since 2010!! pic.twitter.com/jMf2MJWQWK — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 14, 2017 For the first time since 2010, the LIU Post Pioneers are East Coast Conference champions. They completed the journey with their 9-7 victory over the Molloy Lions. This was the first time in the past six seasons that the ECC champion was not either Dowling or St. Thomas Aquinas. It was a game that definitely lived up to the expectations as the score bounced around quite a bit, but despite the late push from Molloy, LIU Post was able to come out on top. LIU Post got out to an early lead in the bottom of the first with a Zach Fritz RBI fielder’s choice with the help of a throwing error that brought in a pair of runs. Molloy answered back...

LIU Post Splits Dramatic DH with Le Moyne

LIU Post and Le Moyne both braved the cold for a pair of games that were shortened to seven innings. Post won the first game 3-1, but fell in game two 5-2. The first pitch was at 10 am, while the sun was trying to peek out from behind the clouds. Jake DeCarli took the mound and shut down Le Moyne’s bats. His breaking ball was spectacular, time and again he would use it to get ahead of batters on the first pitch. DeCarli threw the complete seven inning game, giving up just one run, six hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters. Although, that’s not to say there weren’t any close calls, but whenever Le Moyne would threaten, DeCarli would settle in earning his second win of the season in the process. Offensively, Post was out-hit by Le Moyne–tallying only four hi...

Jake DeCarli Strikes Out 10 in 4-3 Victory over Southern New Hampshire

Jake DeCarli looked like the 2015 version of himself in last night’s outing against No. 6 ranked Southern New Hampshire. The senior RHP struck out 10 and allowed only four hits over 7.0 IP in the 4-3 victory. Dan Jagiello came on in relief and struck out all four batters he faced to record his first save of the season. The Pioneers’ offense was dormant for the first four innings, and they trailed 3-0 when they came to bat. They sparked a rally, with the first run coming on an RBI single by Michael Greene. Reigning All-Long Island outfielder Rob Andreoli smacked an RBI single of his own, as did Anthony Vaglica. The go-ahead run came across on a double play off the bat of Zach Fritz. With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 2-3. They will be back in action today against Felicia...
