This week we will limit it to the Top 10 local colleges. It’s getting very difficult to differentiate the teams and that’s a testament to how they’ve turned their seasons around and improved the overall product of Long Island baseball. Without further ado, here’s my best effort at our latest installment of this season-long series. The Elite St. John’s (Record: 26-5, Stock UP) They won all four games this week by the cumulative score of 32-11 and that was with two extra-inning wins! Jesse Berardi is having one of the finest years in the rich tradition of the program’s history. He played in front of 20 scouts the other day–he’s putting up numbers better than World Series winner Joe Panik did. He and John Valente already have 50 hits. They are t...
Many of the local teams have begun to turn their seasons around just at the right time. The early season struggles of the non-conference games are in the rear view mirror with conference play in full swing. Admittedly, with many of the teams now playing well, the difference between many of the teams is virtually razor-thin. The Elite- St. John’s (Record: 22-5, Stock DOWN) It was their first difficult weekend of the season. They lost two of three to Creighton. They won on Friday night in 14-innings, but it definitely took a toll on them. Sean Mooney threw well that night, he’s been lights-out through 44.2 IP this season. Jesse Berardi already has 43 hits and his name is skyrocketing up the draft boards. They will take on Albany and Butler this week. Trending Up Stony Brook (Reco...
It was a thrilling week for the local college baseball teams. There is plenty of shake up towards the top of the rankings. Like the previous two weeks, we will separate the teams into tiers based on their momentum and performance. Tier 1:The Elite St. Johns (Record: 21-2, Stock UP) They had no problem dealing with prosperity now that they’ve hit national acclaim. After getting ranked fifth in the nation, they went out and won all three games this week. Freshman Sean Mooney improved to 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA. Ryan McAuliffe is not far behind with a 3-0 record and 1.08 ERA. Something special is brewing in Queens Tier 2: Trending Up 2. Nassau CC (7-3, Stock UP) What a week for them–they are riding a four-game winning streak. The stats are pretty absurd. Elijah Tavarez is fifth in the...
Tier 1: The Elite St. John’s (Record: 18-2, Stock UP) Status quo for the Red Storm. They swept Maine this week. Sean Mooney fired the program’s first complete game since 2015 and he needed only 99 pitches to do so. They are firing on all cylinders. Tier 2: Trending Up 2. Adelphi (Record: 13-7, Stock UP) Terrific weekend for the Panthers, who won three of four conference games. They are getting contributions up and down the lineup–they averaged 7.9 runs per game this weekend. They now have seven regulars hitting .299 or better highlighted by Brandon Morse’s .382 AVG. Another dominant outing from T.J. Santiago on Saturday. Very important relief outing this afternoon from Chris Lemorocco to bridge the gap to the bullpen. The back end of the bullpen of Michael Tarpey an...
Weather caused many more cancellations this week (what else is new?). But there was still plenty of games that will factor into this week’s Power Rankings. In this edition, we are going to do things slightly different considering the difficulty in differentiating teams with less than 10 games under their belt. I will separate teams into five tiers based on their current record, momentum and likelihood of turning their seasons around. Tier 1- The Elite St. Johns (Record: 14-2, Stock UP) Another great week for the Johnnies, winning both of their games. They are hitting .323 as a team with a 2.62 ERA. John Valente is batting .486 and is headed towards an All-American season. Tier 2- Trending Up 2. Adelphi (Record: 8-6, Stock UP) Great offensive week down in Florida despite the 5-0 loss ...
It was another abbreviated week of college baseball due to the inclement weather. Some of the teams were fortunate enough to be down south and get their games in. Nassau CC is the only local team that hasn’t began their season yet. Aside from a select few, it’s been a rough start for the locals but we’ll rank the teams based upon their current record and momentum. St. John’s (Record: 12-2, Stock EVEN) The nationally ranked Johnnies have what every team is after–a team firing on all cylinders. They just won two of three against Liberty this weekend. John Valente is making a case to win the Golden Spikes Award–he’s hitting .533 (32-for-60, .575 OBP, .600 SLG). Jamie Galazin (.351) and Jesse Berardi (.327) are doing some heavy lifting as well, a big r...
The unexpected arctic temperatures put a huge damper on baseball this week on Long Island. A few of the teams were able to escape down south to get their games in, but the rest were left to track the weather fronts all weekend. In the case of Farmingdale and St. Joseph’s, the weather delayed there season until the second week of March. With that being said, here is my best attempt to rank the teams in our coverage area. (Note: These rankings are based off a team’s current momentum and performance against their competition, not weighted to Div-I, Div-II, etc) St. John’s (Record: 10-1, Stock UP) It’s hard to imagine a team getting off to a better start than them. This week they defeated the reigning national champions in Coastal Carolina. They finally lost today, but ...
Only a handful of teams were in action last week, so we held off on our weekly Power Rankings. This is a great week to start it–the cream has already begun to rise to the top. We will be adding more teams to the coverage this year–St. John’s, Fordham, Queens and Maritime. Typically, the weekly Power Rankings will be for Exclusive aXcess members only, but this week will be for everyone. Now is a great time to purchase your membership, as we will have an influx of member-only content throughout the season. Without further ado, here’s Volume 1 of the 2017 Power Rankings, only including the teams that have played a game. St. John’s (7-0, Stock UP): No debate here–the Red Storm have gotten off to a scorching start. They are off to their best start since 2010....
