Class A Mid-Season Power Rankings
With six games left to play in the regular season, there are a ton of teams that are competing for playoff spots. For the first time in awhile, there’s no such thing as a team that’s clearly better than everyone else. Right now, a number of teams can win the County Championship. There have been some surprises thus far, but these next two weeks will be interesting to see who comes out on top in the race for the postseason. Here are the mid-season power rankings for Class A. 10. Carey (7-2) Under Doug Robbins first year as head coach, things are looking bright for Carey heading into the back end of the season. Power Rankings: Week 10
We are really getting to the home stretch now as we approach the final days of April. There’s just one month until conference playoffs for Division-I, three weeks until Division-II and two weeks until Division-III. The top teams have solidified themselves with strong play over the past several weeks, but the postseason is where they must continue to peform. How how they stack up: Division-I: 1.Stony Brook (Record: 22-12, Past Week: 2-1) 2. St. John’s (Record: 22-14, Past Week: 3-1) 3. Fordham (Record: 23-18, Past Week: 1-3) 4. Hofstra (Record: 11-24, Past Week: 4-0) Analysis: I was at Stony Brook’s double header on Friday against Albany, it was a crucial series win against an America East rival. Power Rankings: Week 7
Admittedly, this is the toughest of the seven weeks to rank due to the recent performances–and that’s a good thing. At the Division-I & II levels, there is a lot of parity. This weekend I watched NYIT-Queens on Saturday and Stony Brook on Sunday morning, which I will factor into these rankings. Here’s my best guess: Division-I Stony Brook (Record: 14-8, Trending UP) 2. St. John’s (Record: 12-10, Trending UP) 3. Fordham (Record: 16-12, Trending EVEN) 4. Hofstra (Record: 3-18, Trending Down) Analysis: After watching Stony Brook yesterday perform well and run their stretch to 11 wins in 12 games, that’s enough to put them at the top of this list. Power Rankings: Week 6
With the weather warming up this week, we should hopefully have a week unimpeded for the first time of the year. This is great news as teams can finally get into a rhythm and play their best baseball. This week we were able to cover Molloy, NYIT, Adelphi, LIU, Farmingdale, USMMA and St. Joseph’s. Here’s my best attempt that ranking the local schools. Division-I St. John’s (Record: 10-9, Trending UP) 2. Stony Brook (11-7, Trending UP) 3. Fordham (Record: 14-10, Trending EVEN) Analysis: It was a terrific week for all of these squads. Stony Brook is riding an eight-game win streak, St. John’s streak is at seven and Fordham has won four of five, having their streak snapped by St. Bonaventure, 1-0. College Power Rankings: Week 5
This week we covered Stony Brook, LIU Post and Molloy, so I’ve almost gotten to see all of the local teams. Right now, the most compelling Division might be Division-II with four of the five teams are over .500. It makes this list more intriguing when the teams are competitive. Here’s my best attempt to rank the locals: Division-I: Fordham (Record: 11-9, Trending EVEN) It was not a great week for them in Maryland, but they retain their top spot for another week because of the six-game win streak leading up to that. Jake MacKenzie is leading the team in hitting by far; .360 AVG with 27 hits already. The 3.47 ERA has certainly kept them winning ballgames. Weather once again caused some havoc on the schedules this week; aside from the teams that were able to escape down south. Fortunately, we were able to cover a few games finally and they happened to be pretty great match ups. The only local team yet to play a game is St. Joseph’s, who will open on Tuesday against Lehman so we will omit them from the list because I don’t have a read on them yet. Power Rankings: Week 3
This was a very frustrating weekend because so many games were wiped out. With the storm that hit last night into this morning, this very likely that any game that was scheduled to be played early this week–such as NYIT vs Adelphi will now be cancelled. The silver lining is that with Spring Break coming up, many teams will be able to get 5-7 games in this week. Like last week, there’s no reason yet for the Division-III Power Rankings since Farmingdale and St. Joseph’s haven’t played a game yet and Old Westbury has only played two games. It was a fascinating weekend in many ways. First-and-foremost, there was actual baseball played on Long Island for the first time this season and that will never get old. That first live action at Baseball Heaven just lets you know you’re alive and for a few minutes, all is well in the world. Secondly, it was fascinating because Frank Catalanotto‘s team has come out of the gates firing and off to an incredible 4-0 start. LIU Post, who started off with the dreaded 0-4 have made a furious run and won their last four games. On the downside, it’s been the Division-I teams that have been lethargic and none of them are currently over .500. Suffolk CC Advances To NJCAA Region XV Championship With Blowout Win Over Nassau, 14-6
Suffolk CC displayed a show of dominance in their 14-6 victory over Nassau CC in the NJCAA Region XV playoffs. The Sharks advance to tomorrow and are set to play Nassau again, needing just one win to advance to the World Series. Despite the impressive run margin, Suffolk was down 3-0 after the first inning. Nassau sophomore outfielder Vincent Napolitano got this three-and-a-half hour offensive showcase started by driving a two-out, three-run homerun over the left field fence. “We had great approaches and we swung at really good pitches,” said Suffolk head coach Brian Klammer. “Not swinging at bad pitches is the key to winning.” Suffolk, however, was not deterred by this quick three-run deficit. Willy Adames Ready for the Call
Click For Video From Adames’ Cycle NEW YORK – Willy Adames didn’t appear as if he had too much left to prove in the minor leagues. Tampa Bay, however, assigned him to minor league camp in early March, signaling that the club didn’t think he was quite ready to make the leap from Triple-A Durham. Adames, whom the Rays acquired from Detroit in the 2014 David Price deal, remains one of the top prospects not only in Tampa’s system but also in all of baseball. According to MLB.com, he is No. 22. If he was disappointed that he opened the season in Durham, he hasn’t let it show, putting together a slash line of .315/.419/.507 and 15 RBIs through the end of April. With just one week left of play in Class AA, everything’s starting to get interesting. This past week, we saw Baldwin beat the previous first-place Calhoun Colts in two games, along with Syosset handing Oceanside their first loss of the season. Unexpected outcomes have been the motto so far in 2018, so one can assume we may be in for some surprises this week. Heading into the final week of the regular season, here are the new top five teams in Class AA. 5. Herricks (8-6-1) (Last week: No. 4) Coming off their bye week, Herricks remains one of the two hottest teams in Class AA. The other? The Baldwin Bruins (7-8). On Long Island, there aren’t many things that are more exciting than varsity baseball playoffs. With just one more week of play before the highly anticipated playoffs, not much is set in stone. With every conference up for grabs, it’s hard to see who’s the favorites to emerge as the top dogs right now. As seen in previous years, anything’s possible come May.
