by Aaron Diaz (Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s season preview series.) With a coaching change, the Pierson High School of Sag Harbor continues their same success as they look to bounce back from an unexpected end to their 2023 season.  New head coach Bob Manning will take over the 2024 Pierson team from former coach Jonathan Schwartz. Pierson will be left in good hands with a team full of eight returning seniors in the 2024 season. “Coach Schwartz left me in a good position with high-quality, coachable players,” Manning said.  Pierson finished last season with an 18-5 record. They had an impressive 16-game win streak throughout but the team struggled when it came to postseason play, especially in the County Championship.  “I’m very fortunat...

Recapping A Thrilling Day of County Championships

It doesn’t get much better than 10 elimination games across Long Island to crown County Champions. Scratch that, it doesn’t get ANY better than that. The games ranged from Sag Harbor to South Side, and the great majority of them were close. I wish I could be at all the games but that’s just not possible, so I took my best guess as to which game to cover. I started at Sachem East, stayed for a few innings and made the short drive to Selden for Newfield’s game. The decision worked out well as Commack got out to an early 4-1 lead then I went to a Newfield and the score was 0-0 in the second inning. Here’s all the action. Nassau III South Side defeated Manhasset, 2-0, on the road behind a complete game, two-hit shutout by Danny Russell. This was a remarkable turn ...

Pierson Has Sights Set On Class C State Title

by Tony Genualdo Last season was nothing short of a roller coaster for Pierson. Despite the ups and downs, they were competitive with their league right until the very end, where they lost three close games to Babylon. The postseason saw them represent Long Island in the Class C state tournament. They defeated a then 21-3 Tuckahoe in the regional finals and made it to the final four where they lost to Cooperstown. Coach Jon Schwartz reflects on the experience. “I couldn’t have been more proud of our team for the way we competed, and the confidence we displayed during the postseason games,” Schwartz said. “It was clear that despite our league record, we deserved to be there amongst the best in New York.” Their offseason started in September with voluntary long toss sessions and winter worko...
