The Molloy Lions may have limped out of the gate but they have turned their season around recently. They ran their win streak to six after a 10-8 victory over Queens yesterday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep. They took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI triple by Peter Theodorellis – who entered the game with a robust .400 AVG – and an RBI double by Sean Hogan – who was just behind at .375 AVG. Corey Tingo got the Knights on the board with an RBI double to score Brad Sakellarides in the second. Molloy extended their lead to 6-1 in the third after an RBI ground out by Matt Overton, RBI single by Thomas Brady and a two-run double by Garrett Scavelli. To their credit, Queens did not back down. Andrew Smith drove in Evan Christopher with an RBI single in...
When asked what he is going to do on his team’s first off day since Saturday, Long Island Road Warriors catcher Thomas Brady quite a relatable response. “Honestly, I’m just going to rest,” Brady said. “I need to rehab my legs, we’ve had a tough stretch and I think we deserve this day off.” A day off is more than deserved. The Road Warriors (5-0) opened its season on Sunday and have played (and won) every day since. In the team’s latest victory, Long Island outplayed Sag Harbor (1-3) at home, winning 3-2. Brady continued his impressive start to the season, picking up two RBIs, throwing out two runners trying to steal second and earning our @DigmiNation player of the game. “I’ve really been seeing the ball well,” Brady said. “Anything I can do to help the team win sits well with me.” The Roa...
The annual seniors-only classic began with an early lead for Suffolk, who hosted the event. St. Joseph’s stands could hardly hold the mostly-Suffolk crowd that supported their run manufacturing team, who scored in all but two innings. Rocky Point Head Coach Andrew Aschettino was part of a coaching staff that included two other notable Class A head coaches in Bayport’s Jim Moccio and Mount Sinai’s Eric Reichenbach. “This was a team of studs, this was fun. I told them before the game that they are here for a reason, and go out there and do what you do,” Aschettino said. Kenneth Gordon set the tone for Suffolk working a four-pitch walk to lead off the game. After a couple of fielder’s choices, Brian Morrell busted a line drive single up the middle to drive in Peter Theodorellis from sec...
First year Commack head coach Bryan Bonin was fired up with his team taking game one of the Suffolk County Class AA finals from West Islip. The first of a three game set was a classic pitcher’s duel in every sense of the term between WI senior Joe Valentino and Commack’s senior ace, Peter Theodorellis. West Islip scored one in the top half and Commack responded with two of their own to win it. “That was just a tough win, we teach the guys all season long to just stick together and good things will happen; do what we practice, and it worked out for us today, we got one more to win.” said Bonin. The intensity of this extra-inning game was felt throughout, as St. John The Baptist has one big section of bleachers forcing opposing fans to sit together. Theodorellis and Valentino both had ...
Check out our latest edition of aXcess baseball weekly featuring Peter Theodorellis (Commack ’17, Farleigh-Dickinson) and Logan O’Hoppe (St. John the Bapist ’18, East Carolina). Link below.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of great pitchers over the years. The group of arms in the 2017 class gives them all a run for their money. Here are my top three based on what I’ve seen. Brian Morrell (Shoreham-Wading River, Notre Dame-commit) The thing I like about Brian Morrell is he pounds the strike zone. Electric arm and his curveball is flat-out nasty–it’s a knuckle-curve. Change up is way above average and of course, his velocity is 88-92 AVG. He’s a competitor, and he’s also a great hitter. 2. Ben Brown (Ward Melville, Siena-commit) Tremendous work ethic. Fastball anywhere from 88-91 MPH with a great overhand curveball and great change up. He pounds the strike zone too and he’s a very tough competitor. Being 6̵...
One of the signs of a great pitcher is dominating the top competition. Brian Morrisey certainly did that today in Commack’s 7-0 shutout over League 2 rival Connequot. The Stony Brook-commit struck out 14 batters, allowing only two hits, walking two and hitting one batter as the Cougars improved to 4-0 on the season after last week’s sweep of Central Islip. He was fired up, displaying tons of raw emotion after his clutch strikeouts. “I just wanted the team to be pumped as much as I was,” said the aXcess pre-season top 30 player. “First series was more of an easy sweep, we had some fun but this series we wanted to come back out really good,” he added. He impressed the bevy of MLB scouts that were in attendance with advanced feel for three pitches and ...
What a tremendous experience it was for the 20 players who were a part of Sal Agostinelli‘s All-Star team this past week in the Dominican Republic. The competition was top-notch. All players were either already signed and playing on the Dominican Summer League teams of their respective organizations or very worthy of being signed. In fact, a number of Dominican players were signed right on the spot after their performances on the field. All five of the games were played in front of several MLB area scouts. Here are some notes from the five games. There were 2 teams–one from the class of ’17 and ’18 and one from ’19 and ’20. Each team played the Dominican Summer League teams from the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers...
