While everyone will immediately think of Mets RHP Marcus Stroman, there have been quite a few since including Matt Vogel – who was also drafted out of high school in 2013. Knoth is showing the type of potential to join that list. As we learn more about pitching, we can learn even more about a pitcher’s ability to be effective. Spin rate, perceived velocity and spin efficiency are all factors that make a pitcher more difficult to square. Sometimes, it’s more simple than that. When a pitcher is in 10th grade, only 160 lbs and already sitting in the low 80s, that’...

OTD: Pat-Med Pulls Off Huge Upset of No. 3 Hills East, Advance to Semis

Final: Pat-Med 4, Hills East 3 WP: Angelo Sciandra No. 3 Hills East is eliminated pic.twitter.com/m2HFo2zlbD — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 19, 2017 To say that Pat-Med came in with the chips stacked against them would be an understatement. As the No. 14 seed against No. 3 seed Hills East, they would have to pull off all their victories on the road. They put a sophomore, Randall Alejo, up against Vanderbilt-commit Matt Hogan and they had a number of sophomores playing prominent roles in the game. None of that mattered, as they pulled off the upset with a 4-3 victory to advance to the Class AA semifinals against Commack beginning on Monday. “We wanted to kind of represent our league, and we did a nice job, we’ve had great at bats for the past few weeks,” said Coach Anthony Frasc...

OTD: Pat-Med Wins Wild One Over Sachem East 12-8

(Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared on March 30, 2017.) If you like pitching duels this one was not for you. Pat-Med avoided a series sweep with a 12-8 win over Sachem East in a wild game that took over three hours and featured several lead changes. The story of the game was Albany-commit Brad Malm smacking a three-run HR in the first inning and also just narrowly missing another one in the sixth inning, that was ultimately a two-run double to put the Pat-Med Raiders up 6-4. “I felt like I was seeing the ball very well and my teammates and I put together a few great innings which helped, not only the pitchers but, the whole team,” said the senior SS. The game was far from over at that point, though. Sachem East bounced back and tied the game on a solo shot by Brendan Rya...

Pat-Med looking to walk off pic.twitter.com/ffZoqvsylH — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 8, 2019 According to head coach Anthony Frascogna, Patchogue-Medford should be in more than capable shape heading into the 2020 season. They finished 2019 with a 9-9 league record, qualifying for the postseason with a 9th inning walk-off win against Longwood. “We did graduate a couple of seniors, but our key guys all played last year. Our best pitcher, Chris Baldwin, was All-League last year, and did a nice job for us,” said Frascogna.  The head coach had enormous praise for his star pitcher, for his talent, his character and his competitive drive.  “He’s going to Alfred St...

Here’s What Marcus Stroman Had to Say on ‘YNK’ Podcast

Long Island’s own Marcus Stroman appeared on Mike Stud‘s “YNK” podcast. Atypical from most interviews, it was 90 minutes long and the Pat-Med native opened up about a variety of topics that are typically not mentioned on radio or TV. Marcus attended Duke University with Mike Stud (Mike Seander) and they became very close friends. Seander hosted Stroman on his official visit and he even encouraged him to begin his music career. They have remained close to this day, and Stroman even appeared on three of his songs (These Days, Shine, Take it How You Wanna). Stroman was traded to the Mets in a pre-trade dealine deal that surprised many in baseball, who expected him to be dealt to a contender like the New York Yankees. He wound up performing well; going 4-2 with a 3.77 E...

Game of the Week Presented by Muddy Locker Sports: Walk-Off in 9th Inning Sends Pat-Med to Postseason

Randall Alejo was lights-out in Pat-Med’s 1-0 victory. He did not factor in the decision but fired 7 shutout innings as the Raiders clinch a postseason berth. Inning-after-inning that’s what we saw from both Pat-Med RHP Randall Alejo (St. Rose-commit) and Longwood LHP Steven Murphy (Adelphi-commit). Both starting pitchers exited with the score tied 0-0, but Murphy left with a runner on first in the ninth inning following a lead off walk to Tyler Miller. An E5 called for an obvious bunting situation. When Pat-Med’s No. 5 hitter Phil Gerard dropped down a bunt and the attempt...

Rich Ciufo’s Road To Recovery

by P.J. Potter It’s Opening Night at Historic Hicks Field in Edenton, North Carolina. The fans are still filing into the grandstands as the Steamers are coming up to bat for the first time of the Coastal Plain League season. While people were still getting settled, Rich Ciufo was already locked in. On his very first swing, everyone in the ballpark stopped what they were doing. They looked up as Ciufo crushed the ball over the double deck of advertisement signs in left field, and he was met by a roaring ovation while rounding the bases. And just like that, crossing home plate with a huge smile, Ciufo became a star in the CPL. “It was a great way to open the summer. It felt like a lot of hard work paid off,” Ciufo said, a Medford, NY native attending Brown University. Jumping into the summer...

Logan Doran’s Walk-Off HR Leads Ward Melville to Dramatic Victory Over Pat-Med

It’s hard to have a better inning than Ward Melville sophomore Logan Doran had in the ninth inning. The shortstop made an absolutely stunning diving play with his back to home plate to end the top of the ninth inning and followed it up with a lead off walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to deliver the Patriots a 4-3 victory in a crucial League I match up against Pat-Med. After the game, Doran sounded mature beyond his years when asked about his emotions in such an emotionally-charged game. “I made an error, so I had to come back and make a great play,” said the highly-sought after sophomore. “I just saw a fastball coming up and I put a good swing on it. This is a big rivalry between us,” he added. Final: Ward Melville 4, Pat-Med 3 Sophomore Logan Dora...
