OTD: John Rooney Stays Undefeated, Hofstra Rolls Past Delaware

Behind junior John Rooney’s complete-game shutout, the Hofstra Pride defeated the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens 9-0 in Hofstra’s CAA home opener. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and a seven-game losing streak against Delaware. “I thought it was literally a complete game played by us,” said Hofstra head coach John Russo. “I don’t know if we’ve played a better game.” Rooney needed just 102 pitches, allowing two hits and one walk on the day striking out 11. With that, Rooney lowered his season ERA to 1.29, and improved his record to 5-0. Junior catcher Matt Siedem went 3-4 with a double, a solo home run, three RBI and a stolen base. Siedem’s stolen base and home run were both his first of the season and fell a triple shy of the cycle. “That’s the first home run I’ve hit in college,” ...

OTD: Jason Diaz Sharp In Kellenberg’s Win Over St. Mary’s

Not a bad start to the varsity career for University of Miami-commit Jason Diaz. The sophomore fired three perfect innings with seven strikeouts during an overpowering outing this afternoon against St. Mary’s in a mercy win for Kellenberg. The reigning CHSAA champs wasted no time getting the offense going with a huge first inning. After back-to-back walks to Terrance Murray and Andrew Steidle, third-place hitter Justin Renner brought them both in with a long HR to left to make it 3-0. After Nick Quatromani reached on an error and James May walked, Diaz reached on an error to load up the bases. Robert Chesney drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0 and Brett Carpentieri increased the lead to 6-0 with a two-run double. Renner recorded his fourth RBI of the inning when he drew a bases loaded ...

OTD: Eddie Bassett, Centereach Shutout Franklin Parra, Copiague

Six strikeouts for Franklin Parra through two innings pic.twitter.com/9zwKhzkYW1 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 5, 2018 (Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared on April 6, 2018) If today was meant to be a showcase of Franklin Parra, Centereach clearly did not get the memo. They defeated Copiague‘s highly-touted LHP by the score of 10-0, behind Eddie Bassett‘s arm and Ryan Mahnke and Brian Honka’s bats. Parra, who is committed to San Jacinto Community College, was far from disappointing. He struck out eight batters over three innings and touched 92 MPH with his heater in the first inning. He was overpowering, but Centereach did work his pitch count up early. He walked one in the first, and another in the second. The Centereach Cougars got on the board in the thi...

OTD: Robbie Keane’s Big Day Gives Farmingdale 13-9 Comeback Victory Over Port Washington

Robbie Keane‘s played through sleet, through rain and through snow–but nothing quite like the wind today. The senior SS had a huge day at the plate in Farmingdale‘s 13-9 victory over previously undefeated Port Washington.  He admitted it was aided–at least in part–by a 45+ MPH sustained wind through out the day. He smacked a game-tying three-run home run in the fifth inning to right to even the score, 8-8, and then the go-ahead two-run triple to left field to give Farmingdale a lead of 10-9. “It helped and hurt us a lot,” he said following the game. “In the field we had a lot of balls just swirling in the air–lot of balls we should’ve caught just dropped and it helped us a little when we were batting–balls just carried. I’ve never played in anything this bad,” he added. The pitching match ...

He got it, up & in, and he did not miss it. He deposited a 2-R home run to left field to score his brother, Nick, and break a 3-3 tie against Smithtown West.  Smithtown East sent Adelphi-commit Michael Storms to the mound. He allowed two runs in the top of the first on an RBI ground out by Jason Weinhaus that scored Eric Reuter and an RBI single to center by John Powlowski to score Jimmy Klee. Brendan Kupka started fo...

OTD: Kevin Sambuco Shines in 2-Hit Shutout Over Rocky Point

Final: Hauppauge 2, Rocky Point 0 WP: Kevin Sambuco (2-hit shutout) pic.twitter.com/CuxDipp61g — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 3, 2018 With the forecast calling for heavy rain beginning at 1pm, there was a 3-hour window to get in the game. Hauppauge starter Kevin Sambuco did it in less than half. The senior RHP carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but settled for a two-hit shutout in Hauppauge’s 2-0 victory over new League 6 rival Rocky Point, needing only 69 pitches to record 21 outs to improve the Eagles’ to 3-1 on the young season. He was starting opposite Bridgeport-commit Joey Grillo, who was named to our Preseason All-Long Island list last month. Grillo and Sambuco traded zeros for the first five innings; doing so in different ways. Hauppauge made Grillo work; they...

Later in the game the Johnnies tacked on another run on a single from Anthony Brocato, scoring Troy Dixon from second. Bonomo Memorial Field in an entertaining match that featured two starting pitchers that are potential MLB Draft picks with at least 20 MLB scouts in attendance. “It’s always a good win when you come from behind against a team like that,” said Le Moyne head coach Scott Cassidy. A couple of pitching prospects started this game with Panthers junior Ed Baram and Le Moyne junior Josiah Gray. The two were roommates last summer while playing for the Hamptons...

OTD: Patch Dooley Fans 15, Fires One-Hitter in 2-1 Victory

by Tyler Marko (Photo Credit: Asia Lee) (Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared on March 31, 2017.) It was a phenomenal pitching duel between Hills East ace Patch Dooley and Smithtown East’s Doug Goodwin this afternoon. Both starters dominated, but Dooley was the star–fanning 15 in a one-hitter and leading the charge in a 2-1 victory. Dooley threw a complete game, the one run he allowed came on the only hit allowed, a home run down the left field line by Andrew Canino to lead off the fourth inning. However, he came back strong recording 11 of the game’s final 12 outs on strike outs, and finishing with 15 Ks. After the game he said, “My curveball was working, I was spotting my fastball and my team did a great job of toughing out two runs to get the win.” Hills East only muste...

OTD: Pat-Med Wins Wild One Over Sachem East 12-8

(Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared on March 30, 2017.) If you like pitching duels this one was not for you. Pat-Med avoided a series sweep with a 12-8 win over Sachem East in a wild game that took over three hours and featured several lead changes. The story of the game was Albany-commit Brad Malm smacking a three-run HR in the first inning and also just narrowly missing another one in the sixth inning, that was ultimately a two-run double to put the Pat-Med Raiders up 6-4. “I felt like I was seeing the ball very well and my teammates and I put together a few great innings which helped, not only the pitchers but, the whole team,” said the senior SS. The game was far from over at that point, though. Sachem East bounced back and tied the game on a solo shot by Brendan Rya...

On This Day In Axcess History: Matt DeAngelis’ Walk-Off Single Propels NYIT to DH Sweep over Queens

Walk-off by Matt DeAngelis and NYIT completes the comeback, 5-4, and the sweep over Queens! pic.twitter.com/YvwzAL4CKm — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 30, 2019 NYIT has found all sorts of ways to win ballgames this year. Frank Catalanotto‘s squad continued their winning ways with a DH sweep over ECC rival Queens College on Saturday afternoon by the scores of 13-5 and 5-4. Here’s how it went down: Game 1 D.J. Masuck got the start for the Bears, he ran into immediate trouble when he allowed a leadoff home run to freshman John Strauss, but that lead would not last long for the Knights. The Bears got on the board in the second inning on an RBI single by Nick Tedesco to score Matt Malone. The real action occurred in the third inning, when the bats exploded for seven runs, beginning...
