OTD: Farmingdale Cruises Into the Semifinals

Farmingdale is onto the semifinals! FINAL: Farmingdale 8 Calhoun 1 WP – Justin Rosner (Complete game) pic.twitter.com/4sD41oRuzC — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 20, 2018 For the second time in the past ten days, Farmingdale was on the brink of elimination. Again, they came out on top. The Dalers defeated Calhoun by a score of 8-1 and secured a spot in the Class AA semifinals. When the pressure is at its climax, Justin Rosner always finds a way to stay calm. Once again, his best stuff came in an elimination game. The sophomore finished the day going the distance, allowing only one earned run while striking out nine. “Everything was working for me, my slider I like to keep them off balance to start them out and then come in hard with the fastball,” said Rosner. “Even if I’m ...

OTD: Mike Pienkos Notches Career Win No. 600

Mike Pienkos discusses his 600th career victory pic.twitter.com/ENhFXi5hvD — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 21, 2019 Chaminade Head Coach Mike Pienkos entered elite company with his 600th career victory on Monday night. The No. 1 seed Flyers weathered a seventh inning rally over No. 6 Holy Trinity with a 6-2 victory. Starting pitcher Bobby Dahl went the complete game, he brought a two-hit shutout into the seventh before he ran into a bit of trouble but recorded the final out on a soft line drive to Aidan Larkin at short. Nick Hagstrom got the start for the Titans. They were coming off an upset win over No. 3 St. Dominic last Wednesday night. Hagstrom worked around a two-out single by Larkin in the first inning to put up a zero, but the high-powered lineup of the Flyers could not ...

OTD: Pat-Med Pulls Off Huge Upset of No. 3 Hills East, Advance to Semis

Final: Pat-Med 4, Hills East 3 WP: Angelo Sciandra No. 3 Hills East is eliminated pic.twitter.com/m2HFo2zlbD — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 19, 2017 To say that Pat-Med came in with the chips stacked against them would be an understatement. As the No. 14 seed against No. 3 seed Hills East, they would have to pull off all their victories on the road. They put a sophomore, Randall Alejo, up against Vanderbilt-commit Matt Hogan and they had a number of sophomores playing prominent roles in the game. None of that mattered, as they pulled off the upset with a 4-3 victory to advance to the Class AA semifinals against Commack beginning on Monday. “We wanted to kind of represent our league, and we did a nice job, we’ve had great at bats for the past few weeks,” said Coach Anthony Frasc...

OTD: NYIT Captures NCAA East Regional

Head Coach Frank Catalanotto on NYIT’s rapid ascension in his first season pic.twitter.com/le2EN2ND3e — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 18, 2019 One year ago, NYIT closed out their regular season with a loss to Queens College to finish their campaign at 13-25-1. On June 7th, they made waves by hiring 14-year MLB veteran and Smithtown native Frank Catalanotto. The move was a positive step forward for a program that had suffered through 13 straight sub .500 seasons. In less than one year, the program has rapidly ascended into becoming a 35-win team that will now participate in the NCAA Division-II Super Regional next weekend either at Southern New Hampshire or neighborhood-rival LIU Post. The 35 wins is a program record, previously set in 1987. Today they continued their fairy...

OTD: Roman Dorosh, Dan Palermo Power Arrows Past Ward Melville

Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is Dan Palermo who hit a leadoff HR in Sachem East’s 8-2 victory pic.twitter.com/vnDXcHOMm3 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 18, 2018 When you play a team for the fifth time of the season, there are no surprises. The cream rises to the top on merit alone and Sachem East rose to the occasion from the first at bat–when center fielder and Iona-commit Dan Palermo launched a solo shot to left off Max Nielsen on their way to an 8-2 victory over Ward Melville. With the victory, the Arrows advance to face West Islip in the finals of Bracket #4. “We always like facing Ward Melville–they’re our biggest rival, we always get hyped for these kind of games and we love it,” said Palermo. They continued to tack on runs. Craig Leonard and Dylan Stalzer ad...

OTD: Mepham Knocks Off Wantagh, 3-2, Behind Gianni Macchio’s Walk Off Double

Gianni Macchio walks it off with a 2RBI double and Mepham eliminates Wantagh!!!!!! FINAL: Mepham 3 Wantagh 2 WP: Tyler O’Neill (CG) Gianni Macchio: Walk off pic.twitter.com/KWbKBq1QJ9 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 14, 2019 There is nothing quite like the atmosphere of a win-or-go home playoff game. In any given sport, emotions are always at their peak and anything can happen. Sure enough, this ballgame lived up to the hype. In a game for the ages, Mepham knocked off the three-time defending Long Island Champion Wantagh Warriors on a two strike, walk off 2 RBI double courtesy of Gianni Macchio. Heading into Monday, nobody predicted this outcome. Considering the fact Wantagh was sending their ace, Mason McLane, to the mound, it seemed even more unlikely. Tyler O’Neill got the st...

OTD: Suffolk Defeats Nassau to Win Region XV Championship

Suffolk defeats Nassau by a score of 11-2 to win the regional championship. pic.twitter.com/5hn4idy9wk — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 11, 2019 On a beautiful spring afternoon, the Nassau Community College Lions were taking on the Suffolk County Community College Sharks in the Region XV Championship game. Southpaw Tyler Schmid took the mound for Suffolk, and immediately found himself in some trouble, walking the first two batters he faced. However, after a 6-6-3 double play, and a flyout to center, he was able to escape trouble. Nassau starting pitcher, Patrick Denicola, had a relatively clean frame. After allowing a one out double to Christian Lent, he retired the next two batters to strand Lent at second. All the runs that Suffolk would need were scored in the bottom of the se...

They will now advance to the NCAA East Regionals next weekend. The location and seeds will be announced tonight at 10pm. This game was put to rest rather quickly. The Pioneers got a leadoff home run by Giovanni Ciaccio, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the ECC Tournament. They added four more runs on a grand slam by Michael Manzione, his 10th of the season to go along with his 40th RBI. I...

OTD: St. Joseph’s Outlasts USMMA in 11-Inning Thriller to Capture Skyline Conference Title

And the St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles are the 2018 Skyline Conference Champions! pic.twitter.com/XsYIblRhGb — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 6, 2018 Like the legendary Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra said, “it’s deja vu all over again!” Just as they did in 2016, the St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles captured the Skyline Conference championship in an 11-inning extra inning thriller at Farmingdale State College. The big hit came by pinch-hitter Gehrig Montoro to score Tyler Crafa on a well-struck line drive down the left field line to send his team and the St. Joseph’s faithful into a frenzy. “I said to him right before he got up ‘this is what makes the season, this one hit’ and he went up there and got it!” said fifth year Head Coach Rick Garrett. Reliever Anthony Caminiti, who came o...

OTD: Ryan Foran Throws Gem, ESM Outlasts Hills West

Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is winning pitcher Ryan Foran who pitched 6.1 solid innings allowing only 2 runs with eight strikeouts #TipYourCap pic.twitter.com/qtYtzP6MwM — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 30, 2018 Despite getting off to an undefeated start at 11-0, Hills West is still looking to clinch League 5. They had an opportunity to separate themselves from second-place Eastport-South Manor today, but the Sharks were led by a strong pitching outing by ace Ryan Foran and a sixth inning rally to defeat them, 5-3. The Sharks got off out a fast start. Consecutive doubles by Mike McCormick and Angelo Montalbano gave them a quick 1-0 lead just two batters into the game. After a strikeout, Foran helped himself with an RBI double of his own. At Hills West’s field, the lack ...

OTD: LIU Post and NYIT Split Battle on the Boulevard

(Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared on April 27, 2019) In a crucial ECC double header this afternoon at Angelo Lorenzo Field, LIU Post and NYIT split the two games with NYIT taking the first game and LIU Post salvaging the split in the second. Here’s how it went down: Game 1: LIU Post sent ace James Varela to the mound against a high-powered NYIT lineup, who countered with Chris Mott. The Pioneers got off to a quick start in the first with a RBI singles by Dave Brehm and Anthony Vaglica. They added another run in the third on an RBI ground out off the bat of Jimmy Mendyk. With their ace on the hill, it appeared like that would be enough but Varela did not have his best stuff on this afternoon. The Bears forced Varela’s pitch count up early and Ben McNeill ripped a two-ru...

OTD: Colin Shashaty Leads Northport to 8-2 Victory Over Copiague

Colin Shashaty has a big day at the plate and is our @BsbLifestyle101 Player of the Game. He spoke about the win pic.twitter.com/WMRcAV6TzE — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 25, 2019 The Shashaty teams had a field day this afternoon in an 8-2 victory over Copiague. Colin and his brother, Ryan, each went 2-for-3 with Colin providing the game-tying two-run double in the bottom of the third, and Ryan scoring three runs and stealing a base for the Tigers. “I told Liam Fodor, ‘settle down, keep doing what you’re doing and we’ll get some runs for you,” said Colin. That’s precisely what his team did. They were able to overcame an early 2-0 deficit in which it looked like it could be a short day for sophomore RHP Liam Fodor, but the game took a turn after the first inning. Copiague open...
