What’s On Tap for This Week?

May is always chaos for Long Island baseball. With the combination of Division-III conference championships intersecting with Division-II postseason this week, which turns into Division-II Regionals intersecting with Division-I postseason and high school postseason next week which turns into the Long Island Championships for Class AA, A, B and C. Needless to say it’s a crazy time for us, but you have to love it. As opposed to the Power Rankings, we are going to do something different. That’s because this deep into the season, it’s pretty much clear how the teams stack up. Here’s what you can follow along with this week. *Note: The ECC playoff seeds will be set following today’s Queens @ LIU Post games. Monday: Queens @ LIU Post 3pm (ECC Regular Season Finale) ...

Farmingdale and USMMA Advance to Winner’s Bracket

Farmingdale, NY– It was a long day of baseball in day one of the Skyline Conference double-elimination tournament, but aside some rain delays and thick fog, there was no surprised. Here’s how it went down: Game 1: Alex Mesaros had the go-ahead hit in the fifth inning. Here he is speaking about the win pic.twitter.com/1PZk6ecroZ — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 3, 2019 Christian Tessitore and Andrew Spinnenweber squared off in a battle of hard-throwing RHPs. Merchant Marines got off to a quick 1-0 start in the second inning when Kyle Cunningham broke on contact with the infield drawn in on a ground ball to shortstop off the bat of Matt Mundorf. It seemed aggressive, but his speed was the difference as he beat the throw home. They added another run in the second inning ...

Previewing the Skyline Conference Tournament

Today begins the three-day, double-elimination Skyline Conference tournament at Farmingdale State College. The event was held there last year, as well as 2016. Both years the Championship was captured by St. Joseph’s College, but with Wednesday’s 10-9 loss at Maritime, they will not have a chance to do so this season. The first game will be held at 1pm, between No. 3 Old Westbury and No. 2 USMMA. Following that will be No. 4 Maritime and No. 1 Farmingdale State. The losers of those games will play at 7pm tonight in an elimination game. The winners will advance to play at 10am on Saturday. Let’s look at the two match ups. No. 3 Old Westbury @ No. 2 USMMA These two teams met on Sunday, April 14 at Old Westbury, with the teams splitting the double header. USMMA took Game 1, ...

Eight-Run Sixth Inning Ignites No. 3 Old Westbury in First Round Match Up

With the game knotted at 3-3 in the sixth inning, Sean Paprocki stepped up the bases loaded and a chance to give the Old Westbury Panthers the lead. The Division-grad laced a two-run double down the right field line to give the Panthers a 5-3 lead. They continued to tack on that inning including a two-run single later in the inning by Mike Manetta and a two-run HR by Shaun Kaminski to break it wide open. Old Westbury starting pitcher Adam Heidenfelder was working very hard, he needed 111 pitches to get through six innings but he was able to make the big pitches when he needed to. He finished with eight strikeouts and eight hits allowed with two walks. Heidenfelder was Old Westbury’s best pitcher throughout the season, he compiled an ERA of 1.25 and a K:BB ratio of 33:6. Adam Heidenfe...

Super Friday Recap (2/23) Presented by The Schwarz Institute

In total, seven different colleges on the island played down south on Friday, with St. John’s getting postponed. It comes as little surprise that we continued to see Long Island teams struggle against schools who have been practicing outside all year long. There was, however, two bright spots that came in the form of double sweeps for the Long Islanders. With that being said, here’s a look at Friday’s results. Division-I: Coming off a strong series win a week ago, Stony Brook struggled on Friday as they fell to Southeastern Lousiana, 7-2. Although Stony Brook collected 10 hits, they couldn’t get things going with runners in scoring position. Chris Hamilton launched a solo home run in the top half of the 2nd to give Stony Brook an early 1-0 lead, but that was the onl...

Fall Ball Series: SUNY Maritime

Our Fall Ball Series continues at SUNY Maritime–the reigning Skyline Conference champs pic.twitter.com/p2cXZNgebb — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) October 17, 2017 Coming off the best season in program history, the Maritime Privateers have a right to be confident and playing loose as they attempt to defend their Skyline Conference title. They held a 3-2 lead into the fifth inning of the NCAA Regionals against powerhouse Shenandoah, who spent eight consecutive weeks as the No. 1 ranked Div-III team in the country. They ultimately had their season cut short but they are in great position for another successful season. In addition to returning seven of their nine starters, they are also returning their entire starting rotation led by Rookie of the Year Travis Bruinsma and Anthon...

Fall Ball Series: SUNY Old Westbury

Senior Adam Heidenfelder will be anchoring the rotation pic.twitter.com/UnEyFlV8bf — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) September 22, 2017 Today I was down at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex, home of the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers, to get a good look at the team they will be going to battle with during the 2018 season. They are coming off a 20-16 campaign, but had their season cut short by No. 5 Mount St. Mary’s in a shocking upset. They graduated 12 players, notably two-time All-Long Island SS Tommy Ziegen, CF Kevin Lao, C Carlos Balmaceda, 3b Michael Cardino in the lineup and RHPs Daniel Aguilo and Trey Pizzutello from the rotation. With that being the case, the performance and leadership of the returning players that they do have is critical. Second baseman Jesse Russo ha...

Farmingdale and Old Westbury Split a Tightly-Contested Doubleheader

Conference opponents Farmingdale State and SUNY Old Westbury split two vastly different–but dramatic–games in a doubleheader today. Farmingdale out-slugged Westbury 10-9 in game one, while Westbury won game two, a pitching duel by the score of 2-1 on a walk-off walk. Game one began as a pitching duel, Matthew Constantine and Trey Pizzutello shut down both side for three innings before the bats broke through. An error in the fourth allowed Farmingdale’s first two runs to come across, but a single by Christopher Reilly and a two-run homer from Domenic Palumbo got the Rams halfway to their final score. Westbury came right back scoring four in the fourth on singles from Paul Rapoli, Carlos Balmaceda and Jesse Matos. They even took a two-run lead off Rapoli’s third singl...

Maritime Sweeps Old Westbury In Thrilling Conference DH

What a thrilling match up it was at the Jackie Robinson Sports Complex at SUNY Old Westbury. Maritime was able to manifest two victories in the DH against Skyline Conference foe Old Westbury on Sunday improving their conference record to 4-0. With both clubs sitting atop the Skyline Conference, it was sure to be a well-played couple of games. Both teams continued to show positive signs, but Maritime emerged as the victors this go round. Old Westbury displayed some solid offense on the day, but the defense is what plagued them–posting eight errors in total between the two games ultimately leading to their defeat. The first game was an offensive showcase especially for the visiting Privateers in their 10-4 win. They posted ten runs on 15 hits–but the game was a pitcher’s duel ear...

Q & A With Jimmy English

(Photo Credit: Kevin Carver) by David Moskowitz You went to Smithtown West.  Both Smithtown High School teams are usually competitive.  What was it like to play there? I was on The Smithtown West Varsity team as a 9th grader, competing until my senior year. Having a few strong players ahead of me, I was able to see how they would handle situations on and off field, forcing me to grow as a person and player. Having these experiences, I was able to become a leader myself in my later years on the team. Coach Mike Miller had helped me develop my confidence, work counts, and teach me the mechanics on how to throw different pitches. He was a huge part in cultivating my success throughout my four years at West. Can you comment on the rivalry between the two school districts? The rivalry between t...
