by Andy Smith It’s the start of a new season ! And with the mild winter, it seems like it flew right by onto baseball season. The Division-Is opened up last night and Molloy will open up today. Without further ado, here’s how it went down… Division-I: St. John’s was the lone local team to get a W as they came out of the gate hot with an impressive 7-6 win in extra innings at Old Dominion. Paul Orbon‘s game-winning RBI single was the difference, as the Johnnies were able to erase a 4-run deficit. David Glancy picked up right where he left off last year, crushing a HR. Chuck Sanzio pitched two innings and earned the winning relief. Sony Fauci started and went four innings, allowing 4 runs (2 ER) and did not factor in the decision. He walked five and struck out 2...
By Michael Malaszczyk Coaches are the backbone of baseball. A team’s style of playing, the playing time allocation, the relationships in the clubhouse, and so on are very much dependent on the coach. In terms of sheer knowledge of how to coach, one won’t find someone more knowledgeable than Coach John Lonardo (currently coaching at Locust Valley), who is retiring after a whopping 34 years of coaching baseball. In an interview with Axcess Baseball, Coach Lonardo was happy to share his thoughts and reflections on his long, storied career. “I’ve been coaching since 1988,” said Lonardo. “I got my start playing college baseball at John Jay College. When I wrapped up with college baseball, I got my first job as an assistant coach at Bethpage High School.” After spending a number of years as an a...
by Michael Anderson After a long offseason, the 2022 NCAA Baseball season is officially underway, as Friday afternoon brought the first round of action for college baseball this year. However, it was a particularly quiet day for some of the New York schools. St. John’s, Stony Brook, Albany, LIU, Fordham, and Old Westbury all opened up the season with a road game somewhere down south, but only one team came out victorious. Division-I: Middle Tennessee played the role of the away team against St. John’s down in Wilmington, North Carolina, and was able to win an intense game that went into extra innings, 3-2. St. John’s struck early with a pair in the first, as catcher Tate Ballestero singled home the game’s first run. First baseman Nick Cirelli grounded out productively to first base, ...

Division-I St. John’s lost to UCONN, 4-3, to open up their weekend series. Carson Bartels drew a walk in the 9th but they were unable to get him around to score. Austin Peterson earned his sixth win of the season. Joe Joe Rodriguez was tagged with the loss. The Johnnies had 10 hits but struck out 13 times and stranded 8 runners on base. They fell to 14-16 on the season and will play a DH today beginning at 12. (Editor’s Note: Adam is a 2014 graduate of MacArthur HS where he had a standout career. He captured the Diamond Award in 2013 and 2014 – given annually to the top pitcher in Nassau County. He was named second-team All-State and first-team All-State in 2013 and ’14, respectively. Despite getting recruited by some of the top programs in the nation, he chose to attend Hofstra University where he made his collegiate debut at UCLA. After two seasons, he transferred to SUNY Old Westbury where he performed well in 2017 and was off to a great start in 2018 – winning the team’s first two games. After suffering a torn rotator cuff, he came back for his fifth season and was named All-Region and won a playoff game for the Panthers. We had him on IG Live, and here’s ...
(By Joseph Langan and Vin Messana) As we enter the second weekend of college baseball for Division-I schools, some of Long Island’s Division-II & III teams kicked off their season today. Six games were scheduled on Friday as Stony Brook, Fordham and Old Westbury, all suffered tough losses on the day while St. John’s, Molloy and NY Tech came out on top. Here’s how it went down: (Make sure to check out Orlin & Cohen by clicking here). Division I: Stony Brook, taking on a tough opponent in Clemson, gave up an early two-spot that they would never fight back from. Clemson pitcher Sam Weatherly tossed an incredible six innings, only allowing two hits and collecting his first win of the season. Seawolves starting pitcher, Jared Milch, pitched well, pumping out a solid six inni...
For the first time in over 30 years, Pat Shortt didn’t host a Thanksgiving or Christmas at his home. It was simply to soon since the devastating passing of his only child, Joe, who had just turned 37-years-old. He chose to spend the holidays with the Strovinks, close family friends and a well-respected Long Island baseball family. Eric, the father, had a decorated career at Shoreham-Wading River in the late 80s and his two sons, Brennan and Kyle, who both played at Rocky Point. The past four months have been unspeakably difficult for Shortt, a former professional pitcher in the Milwaukee Brewers organization for one season and member of the MLB Scouting Bureau for 24 years. “It’s been very tough on Carmen and I,” said Pat. “When you lose a parent it’s ro...
Here at SUNY Old Westbury for the Fall Ball Series Powered by @EastCoastSP pic.twitter.com/JYtmcj2REn — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 2, 2019 (This is the second installment of the 2019 Fall Ball Series which began with NYIT on Saturday. We will continue these through out the month of October. We will have interviews and video highlights at each of the local college campuses. Please make sure to visit East Coast S & P by clicking here.) Not all champion-less seasons are created equal. In the case of the 2019 Old Westbury Panthers, their surprised postseason run which featured an upset over No. 2 ranked USMMA certainly left a positive taste in their mouth. The team featured only one senior position player which means they will return seven of those eight starters this sea...
As many people know, it was an extremely fruitful year for college baseball on Long Island. While it is easy to see the Division-I teams like Stony Brook on ESPN and a Division-II team in the College World Series, the success of the local Division-III teams can fly under the radar. It has been our mission at Axcess Baseball to shine a light on those programs and we do so by segments like the Fall Ball Series Presented by the Greene Turtle, or covering a double header in March, or having wall-to-wall coverage of the Skyline Conference tournament, or having the players compete in a Home Run Derby, or honored at an Awards Banquet. It’s good to see the players get recognized by outside publications too, though. The big one came out this week with ABCA/Rawlings releasing their All-Region ...
Stop me if you’ve heard this before–Old Westbury advances to face Farmingdale State in the Skyline Conference Finals. For the first time since 2015, but as they did every year from 2010-2015 the Rams and Panthers will square off the right to the capture the Skyline Conference Championship. The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Shaun Kaminski in the bottom of the first, but the Mariners answered back on an RBI single by Garrett Reddeck. Brandon Wilson, one of the stars of the game, laced an RBI single to center to score Sean Paprocki to give the Panthers the 2-1 lead in the second, but Reddeck’s second RBI single of the game tied it back up at 2-2 against Panthers starter Adam Heidenfelder. In the top of the fifth, the Mariners showcased their speed when ...
