Queensborough Community College defeated No. 1 seed Bronx to capture the 2018 CUNAC/Community College championship at MCU Park. One of the major reasons they were able to take the leap and become a championship-caliber team was the production of freshman infielder Nicholas DiLorenzo. The Oceanside native led the team with 35 games played, compiling a robust batting AVG of .357, with an incredible .464 OBP and .705 SLG. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say. How did you decide to attend Queensborough? Queensborough wasn’t my first choice. I originally went to Nassau, but things didn’t work out as I planned. I tried out but ended up not making the team. The next summer I played for a team called NorthEast Empire and my coach Paul Carufe introduced me to Coach P...

The undefeated Sailors entered play with a perfect 7-0 record, but were facing their biggest challenge yet–facing the reigning Class AA Long Island Champion Massapequa Chiefs. The Sailors dominated in all facets of the game; cruising to a 13-0 victory with the exclamation mark coming in the top of the seventh inning on a long three-run HR by UMASS-Amherst commit Dylan Judd. The game was long over by that point, as the Sailors offense scored early-and-often against Chiefs’ RHP Christian...
The top teams in Class AA all took a tumble last week as Plainview, Massapequa and Farmingdale all suffered a defeat. Sophmore Justin Rosner continues to strengthen his case as...

With our fourth nor’easter this month upon us, who knows when opening day may be. As soon as the fields are clear, however, the high school baseball season will finally get underway. Although Class AA may be overlooked because there’s 14 teams compared to 28 teams in Class A, there’s still a significant amount of competition. Last year was about as exciting as it gets in Class AA, with Massapequa taking home the title and the Long Island Championship, so don’t expect this year to be any different. With many of the top teams returning their best players, let’s take a look at this year’s preseason top five teams. 5. Farmingdale A team that took the county by storm in 2017 is back and expected to make a deep run this season. Luckily for the Dalers, their tw...
Typically when a team starts four sophomores in any given year, it’s rebuilding year. Especially when there’s only three seniors, as Oceanside had in 2017. That was not the case, as shown by their 17-5-1 record. What was the secret? Those four sophomores all stepped up to the challenge and performed exceptionally well. First baseman Chris Siklas (.353 AVG), OF Leo Alvarez (.365 AVG), 3B Austin Vlahakis (.321 AVG) and 2B Jake Lazzaro (.305 AVG) were all major contributors as opposed to inexperienced sophomores. Lazzaro, also an All-County WR on the football team, played so well he received an athletic scholarship from St. John’s on the basis of his incredible series against Massapequa. Head Coach Mike Postillo called him “lightning fast” and he will slide over ...
(Photo Credit: Vincent Dusovic) by Julian Guevara Over the past decade the “nail down” reliever has become one of the most important positions in baseball. This is due in part to the plethora of incredible relief pitching and closers that emerged from the late 1990s-2010. Every ballplayer in the United States knows that the last thing you want to hear at Yankee Stadium in the top of the ninth is Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”. Of course, Mariano Rivera’s cutter is what the hitters really feared; however the song plays a huge role in getting the fans involved. My favorite example is the 2012 Oakland Athletics and their closer, Grant Balfour. Balfour, a genius in my opinion, did everything he could to get all 60,000 fans at the Oakland Coliseum involved. His chosen song is also a Metallica hit,...
Oceanside has been knocking on the doorstep for a Nassau County Class AA title for the past couple years. This season, they were defeated by the eventual champions from Massapequa on a walk-off RBI single by Chris Wasson. Despite the loss, they finished the season with a record of 17-5-1. A big reason for their postseason run was catcher Dylan Judd. The 2018 grad is well-regarded as a receiver and can handle the bat exceptionally well for a catcher. The 6’1″ 180 lb catcher was one of the top players available in the class, until last week when he committed to Div-I UMASS Amherst. He plays his summer ball with the East Coast Jays. He spoke with Vinny Messana and here’s what he had to say… Walk us through the college recruiting process and how the UMass-Amherst commit...
