Ryan Conk Leads Smithtown West in 3-0 Shutout

by Andy Smith Ryan Conk was today’s Game Changer by throwing a complete game shutout to lead the Bulls of Smithtown West to a 3 – 0 victory. pic.twitter.com/JbDOfWLewy — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 24, 2023 Pitching was the story today as only three players rounded the bases, and all were Smithtown West Bulls. Ryan Conk was the star of the show, throwing a complete game shutout with eight punchouts while surrendering only three hits and two walks. Conk was resilient today and got out of a few jams with runners in scoring position multiple times to keep this game scoreless. Catcher John Dwyer (MIT-commit) drew a one-out walk in the opening frame and then stole second base. However, Conk would retire the next consecutive batters via a groundout and a strikeout. In ...

Northport Returning Several Impact Players From 2022

In 2021, Northport had a veteran, experienced team that made a team postseason run but ultimately lost to Huntington in the Conference Semifinals. They graduated 17 players from that team included all three of their starting pitchers (Liam Fodor, Liam Darrigo and Jason Schwartz) and their Gold Glove OF, Daniel Thompson. Northport pitching staff Liam Fodor: 3-1 record, 1.30 ERA, 32.1 IP, 25 H, 43 Ks, 3 BBs Liam Darrigo: 5-0 record, 1.02 ERA, 34 IP, 28 H, 30 Ks, 7 BBs Jason Schwartz: 3-0 record, 0.00 ERA, 14 IP, 8 H, 19 Ks, 4 BBs, 2 saves Darrigo will go today against Palmer O’Beirne — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 16, 2021 Entering last season with an inexperienced team and having lost their starting 3B to play lacrosse in favor of baseball, things could have gone really s...

Up Next Powered by Eye Q Investigations: Max Donacea

(This is the eighth installment of our weekly “Up Next Series Powered by Eye Q Investigations” in which we highlight the best underclassmen from across Long Island. Previously, we featured Miguel Sime Jr, Matt Cruz, Luke Coats, Michael Gardner, Tyler Scarry, Kenny Meliere and Jaiden Zoller. Make sure to check out Eye Q Investigations by clicking here) Power-throwing lefties. That will never go out of style across amateur baseball. Every year there’s another that takes the next step and becomes a dominant force and becomes a Division-I pitcher. One name that I believe fits that mold is Northport sophomore Max Donacea. I first watched him at our Axcess World Series back in September at St. Dominic HS. He was brilliant in his outing against players that were 1 or 2 years old than him. H...

After Graduating 17 Seniors, Northport Will Rely Heavily on Younger Players

By Michael Malaszczyk Northport 4, Smithtown East 0 WP: Liam Fodor (1-hit shutout, 11 Ks, 1 BB, 92 pitches) pic.twitter.com/hczy782jXN — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 8, 2021 Coach Sean Lynch of Northport is looking ahead to 2022 with a team of mostly young players. Northport played a great season in 2021. They finished with a 13-5 overall record, and made it to the playoffs. In the playoffs, they were able to defeat Smithtown East before ultimately losing to the county champs in Huntington. That is in Northport’s rear view mirror now, however; most of last year’s team graduated. “We graduated 17 seniors last year,” said Coach Lynch. “Including our entire pitching staff led by All-County Liam Fodor and All-Leaguer’s Liam Darrigo and Jason Schwartz.” In addition to those th...

Will Deriso Ties It, Rocco Stola Wins It For Northport In 8-6 Thriller

Final (8 innings): Northport 8, Bay Shore 6 WP: Jason Schwartz Rocco Stola drove in the game winning runs with a 2-run double in the eighth pic.twitter.com/LWJKccIYXo — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 18, 2021 By the time Rocco Stola laced a two-run double to right center field to score the go-ahead runs for Northport, the first inning was nothing but a distant memory. We had already seen a game-tying, two-strike, go-ahead home run in the previous inning and a game-tying error in the previous half inning that briefly put a scare in the Tigers. Northport would go on to hold on, by the score of 8-6 over previously undefeated Bay Shore, to improve to 5-2 on the season. All told, it was an intense game between two outstanding ballclubs on Tuesday afternoon in Bay Shore. The Marauders ...

Northport Hungry to Get a Taste of the Postseason

Northport was a team that was chomping at the bit to start the 2020 season considering how strong their roster was. With a rotation and offense led by Charleston-commit Larry Citrola, the Shashaty twins atop the lineup, Queens-commit Danny Deutsch plus a great group of juniors, “we thought it could be a special group,” according to head coach Sean Lynch. Once the season was on pause, he said they were intently following along every update from the governor and Section XI, hoping they could at least play a condensed season knowing they had a chance to make a run. When it was canceled, “it was a very tough pill to swallow,” said Lynch. “It would’ve really been nice to play, between our senior leadership and seniors bats plus our junior pitchers, we thought...

He spoke about the win pic.twitter.com/WMRcAV6TzE — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 25, 2019 The Shashaty teams had a field day this afternoon in an 8-2 victory over Copiague. Colin and his brother, Ryan, each went 2-for-3 with Colin providing the game-tying two-run double in the bottom of the third, and Ryan scoring three runs and stealing a base for the Tigers. “I told Liam Fodor, ‘settle down, keep doing what you’re doing and we’ll get some runs for you,” said Colin. That’s precisely what his team did. They were able to overcame an early 2-0 deficit in which it looked like it could be a short day for sophomore RHP Liam Fodor, but the game took a turn after the first inning. Copiague open...

Northport Returns Strong Core of Impact Players

Northport came up one win shy of a postseason berth last year, but expectations are high entering 2020 due to their large contingent of returning impact players. “Almost our entire team is back from last year,” said head coach Sean Lynch. “With the exception of All-League 3B Trent Mayer and pitcher Kevin Rooney,” he added. University of Charleston-commit Larry Citrola is their big bat and will also anchor the rotation. He was recruited as a two-way player and Lynch called him “one of the most athletic kids at Northport” and that he will play the field on the two days that he doesn’t pitch. He may potentially play on the left side of the infield. Accompanying him in the middle of the order is CF Colin Shashaty, who batted over .400 but just missed o...

Colin Shashaty Commits to Ithaca College

He spoke about the win pic.twitter.com/WMRcAV6TzE — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 25, 2019 Sometimes players fly under-the-radar without garnering too much attention. One player that fits this description is Northport 2020 grad Colin Shashaty. As a junior, he had a remarkable season for the Tigers; he batted .432 over 67 at bats with 29 hits, scored 25 runs, drove in 19 runs, stole 10 bases, drew six walks and struck out only three times. He announced his commitment to Division-III powerhouse Ithaca College this past weekend. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say… Can you describe your experience with the college recruiting process and why you made you...

Where Are They Now: Rick Vichroski, 1983 Recipient of the Yaz Award

It’s been 36 years since Northport has won a Suffolk County Championship. They came awfully close in 2016, when they were defeated in three games by West Islip, but they came away just short. In 1983, when John DeMartini was still the JV coach, they not only won Suffolk County, but defeated Bethpage in the Long Island Championship. The winning pitcher in that game? Rick Vichroski. Rick improved his record to 12-0 that season, his third year on varsity. The Tigers leaned on his arm heavily that season, as he accounted for 46 percent of his team’s wins on the way to an appearance in the New York State semifinals. Vichroski, 53, is now the owner/operator of Human Healthy Vending and lives in Rhode Island, but his memories of his playing days are still cherished. And they did not e...
