Tuozzolo was an NYPD officer who was killed in the line of duty on Nov. 4, 2016 and is survived by his wife Lisa, a North Babylon alumnus, and their two sons – the youngest of which threw out the first pitch. Each team came together to host a friendly rivalry game at the West Babylon Youth Center in Tuozzolo’s, and used the scrimmage opportunity to call upon some reserves to contribute. Bobby Adamis got the start for West Babylon, but was pulled after ...

Jake Guercio’s Big Day Leads West Islip Over North Babylon

In a makeup game, the West Islip Lions defeat the North Babylon Bulldogs 15-6. Fordham-commit Jake Guercio went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run, three RBI and two stolen bases. West Islip improves to 6-2 while North Babylon falls to 5-3. Jordan Piht gets the win for West Islip while Evan Christopher earns the loss for North Babylon. “I don’t think the score was really indicative of the game,” says West Islip head coach Shawn Rush. “We had some big hits in some big spots…Any time you get out of North Babylon with a victory is a good day,” he added. West Islip got the scoring started early, with Jimmy Loeffler driving in Guercio on a RBI double. Senior Anthony Ippolito would drive in Loeffler on a double in the next at-bat. “[It was a] hard fought ...

North Babylon Season Preview

One of the great predictors of future success at the high school level is the amount of winning that a young group has accomplished. Most of North Babylon‘s young nucleus of players played together not just during the school season, but also during the past three summers for the PAL Blue Knights. This past summer, they won the Boys of Summer 16U American Division with almost exclusively their varsity team. That is very unusual in this day of elite organizations. Head Coach Steve Corrado is very optimistic about his 2018 team. “I was pleased with the progress of the team, they really got better as the season went on,” said Corrado. “We lost four one-run games and two two-run games–I expect that to improve this year,” he added. Additionally, the team gradu...

Grit Baseball Defeats Smithtown Storm in Town of Brookhaven Summer Varsity, 9-4

Grit brought out the bats in a total team victory in a game that was closely contested until Grit unloaded four runs in the fourth. Rocky Point 2018 RHP Anthony Denobrega came away with the win for Grit after throwing three solid innings of two-run ball. He struck out four and walked two allowing three hits, he left the game in the fourth with a, 7-2, lead after walking the first two batters of the inning. SWR 2018 RHP Mark Franco replaced Denobrega and with the help of his defense escaped unharmed in the fourth. Franco also demonstrated quality pitching locating fastballs down. He did, however, run into some trouble in the sixth leaving with the bases loaded after allowing a run. The Grit right-hander found ways to get outs effectively through his two and a thirds innings of work. “I just...

North Babylon Leaning on Talented Stable of Underclassmen

Coach Steve Corrado knows his team drew some tough luck when they were placed into a playoff bracket with Northport and Bay Shore. After losing the opening round playoff game to Northport, they had to face a hungry No. 1 seed in Bay Shore coming off a loss. They were defeated 7-3, but Corrado knows that shouldn’t take away from the success of the season. “Everything went great until the playoffs,” he said. “We were right there–we beat West Islip during the season and took them to extra innings in the third game. The team really bought in–that’s what happens when you have 13 seniors,” he added. It helped that the team had two seniors that hit .500 in Steven Burke (.500, 3 HR, 23 RBI, 29 runs scored, 37 hits) and Nick Balfe (.500, 5 HR, 37 RBI)...
