Noah Lorenzo Transfers to New York Tech

Another big time arm is headed to Westbury, Noah Lorenzo announced today that he will be transferring to New York Tech upon completing his degree from Long Island University in the spring. This means he will sit out the 2020 season, but be back for the 2021 season with the Bears. The Bears are already loaded for 2020 with transfer pitchers Bobby Vath, Andrew Imperatore and Tyler Schmid coming over. They also have Brandon Alberto and Matt Bartnik returning from missing the 2019 World Series campaign. They figure to be extremely dangerous once again coming off a 37-win season. Lorenzo is a 2016 graduate of St. John the Baptist. The southpaw is a unique pitcher in the sense that he relies heavily on his fastball-changeup combination, and often times he works off his change up. He sits in the ...

LIU Post Advances to NCAA East Regional Championship

Yesterday was an incredible day of college baseball action. There was three local Division-II programs competing in the NCAA East Regional, four Division-Is playing for their postseason lives, one Division-III team in the NCAA Regional and a Junior College team hosting the Super Regionals. From 9am until 10pm, there was important games going on. This doesn’t even factor in the high school baseball going on. For purposes of brevity, we will focus on the college action. We covered the NYIT game at 9am in which their offense supplied the power to send them to Saturday’s Championship against Wilmington needing just one win to punch their ticket to next weekend’s Super Regional. The other big news of the day was LIU Post who squared off against perennial powerhouse Southern Ne...

Pioneers Stay Red-Hot, Advance to ECC Championship Game

The LIU Post won their eighth game in their last nine tries, and this was an important one–as they punch their ticket to the ECC Championship. They will now have to win just one of two games tomorrow to capture their second ECC Championship in the past three seasons. The offense came to play today, they put up 11 runs on 15 hits. The biggest contributor was Mike Manzione, who homered twice (his 8th and 9th of the season). They wasted no time in this one–as they posted a three-spot in the first inning against Bridgeport starter Chris Martucci. Chris Wasson got it going with an RBI double to score Giovanni Ciaccio. A sac fly by Dave Brehm scored Wasson and Manzione’s first home run made it 3-0. LIU Post LHP Noah Lorenzo continued his strong season. He fired scoreless inning...

LIU Post and NYIT Split Battle on the Boulevard Presented by Muddy Locker Sports

(Today’s game coverage is brought to you by Muddy Locker Sports. Please check them out by clicking here!) In a crucial ECC double header this afternoon at Angelo Lorenzo Field, LIU Post and NYIT split the two games with NYIT taking the first game and LIU Post salvaging the split in the second. Here’s how it went down: Game 1: LIU Post sent ace James Varela to the mound against a high-powered NYIT lineup, who countered with Chris Mott. The Pioneers got off to a quick start in the first with a RBI singles by Dave Brehm and Anthony Vaglica. They added another run in the third on an RBI ground out off the bat of Jimmy Mendyk. With their ace on the hill, it appeared like that would be enough but Varela did not have his best stuff on this afternoon. The Bears forced Varela’s pi...

LIU Post Sweeps Doubleheader over Queens College

LIU Post pitched their way to two wins in a double-header against Queens College on Saturday, taking the first game 3-1 before winning the second 2-0. The first game was dominated pretty thoroughly by Post sophomore Noah Lorenzo. The southpaw went 8.1 innings and struck out five while allowing eight baserunners to reach. He left with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth after throwing almost 120 pitches, but redshirt senior reliever Brian Tinney came in and struck out the final two batters in emphatic fashion to give the Pioneers the victory. Lorenzo improved to 4-2 for the year on the win and lowered his ERA from 4.06 to 3.59. Zach Fritz’s patient effort at the plate was the catalyst for Post’s offense in the first game, as the first basemen went 2-3 with an RBI double, a run scored o...

Fall Ball Series: LIU Post

Really good bullpen from freshman Joe Valentino pic.twitter.com/0fkn9Me6Tf — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) October 25, 2017 Our Fall Ball Series concluded this afternoon at LIU Post with the reigning ECC Champion Pioneers. I watched their full-team workout and it was very eye-opening. If there was any question that LIU Post baseball has come a long way over the previous three seasons, look no further than the newly-implemented rule by the school’s athletic department. On days that the men’s soccer team is playing, the baseball team is prohibited from taking batting practice on the field due to the amount of home runs that have interrupted the soccer games. The biggest culprits have been Rob Andreoli and Zach Fritz. Head Coach Mike Gaffney noted that in previous years t...

St. John the Baptist Relying on Pitching and Defense

Casey McKay, now in his second-year as Head Coach at St. John the Baptist, knows a thing or two about winning. During his playing days at SJB, he led the Cougars to a CHSAA league title in 2008 and finishing runner-up in 2007. He also had a successful collegiate career at LIU Post. He will have a challenge this year in replacing their high-level of production from last year’s seniors–Kevin Dolan, Noah Lorenzo, Nick Lasala and Tom Ekbom. The first two are now playing at LIU Post, Lasala is at Farmingdale State and Ekbom is at St. Joseph’s. “This year’s team is a lot different than last year,” said McKay. “We had a lot of guys that hit for power and extra bases, we will have to rely a lot more on our speed, pitching and defense this year,”...

Freshmen That Could Have an Immediate Impact

There was once a time when freshmen had no choice but to watch from the sidelines. It didn’t matter how talented they were, how quickly they retained information or how much leadership ability they possessed. In 1968–finally–the NCAA ruled that freshmen were now eligible to play. The NCAA still has bizarre rules and finds ways to hold people back from prospering, but at least they got this one right. Coaches these days do not care about anything aside from a player’s ability to help a team win ballgames. There’s no reason to discriminate on anything aside from talent. This year, there are a number of talented freshmen that will play crucial roles among the local teams. Here is a list of the top ones… Sean Hogan, Molloy He was named All-League at Holy Tri...
